It's October, and so it is the spooky season, which is the best season. My daughter feels similarly, and she wanted to watch Hocus Pocus yesterday, so we did. I haven't seen that movie since I was a child, but I remember being enthralled by the whole thing, and by the idea of Salem. And I thought of

Rebecca - the book, written by me and illustrated by Sydney Smith- is out today. Today is the release day. I have rarely ever worked on anything that has meant as much to me as this. So, I spent the day making this about how it came to be, and why. I imagine it is the first video you'll see today th

Rebecca, written by me and illustrated by Sydney Smith, arrives in stores tomorrow. Here is the letter that we included in copies that went to librarians and peers. If you have been around here long enough, you know all about me and my sister and my relationship with grief. This book gives voice to

Head on over to the excellent blog Garden Variety to see a picture book convo between myself and these two people I can't believe I am friends with. What a flex!!!

I am very pleased to present two starred reviews for my upcoming picture book, Rebecca. I wrote this book a few years ago. I had a very difficult time with the picture book contract I had, I kept writing sad stories, instead of the funny stories I had signed on for. And these stories were raw and un

Hello all! Just letting you know that your Patreon funds this month are going to a small comics press. In short: The Nova Scotia government has slashed Arts funding to the effect of devastating almost every Arts institution in the province, including music, theatre, publishing, heritage, tourism, yo

You don’t forget that puppies are hard, but you do sort of forget. I think to myself, I don’t remember Agnes being like this - but then I do remember lying in bed with the specific thought “have I made a mistake? I can’t do this.” Which turned out not to be true. But all the same - puppies. Dewey Ma

A quick update. In short - it's over for now. There will be no golf course in West Mabou Beach Provincial Park. I was getting texts about it as the Premier was saying the words. So the park is safe, for now. But Nova Scotia isn't. There is still a push in this province to create an "energy powerhous

God forbid, you endure an essay in my terrible handwriting. But also, there's just too much to say. How even to begin? This will be a long one. If you're more here for easy reading comics and not walls of texts, skip down to the bottom for relevant info for you as a Patreon subscriber here. Here is

Keen eyed Canadian readers will have caught my reference to The Urban Peasant Himself, James Barber. It's not really a reference if you directly name it, is it, but anyway. My daughter Mary and I were back on Mary Janet MacDonald's facebook/youtube cooking show, Tunes and Wooden Spoons. We made toma

There were a lot of people on this vacation! In the comics, a lot of my scribbles look the same! But there was me and my family, my sister and her family, Morgan’s brother and his family, and also we met with Emily Horne and her family. It was very nice! I don’t actually puke on rides but I might pu

We are headed on family vacation, and I am going to try and make comics about it as we go. Hopefully this plan will work! I want to do it for my own memories. I did not make a comic about how packing for this trip (a “glamping” trip requiring that we stuff the car to bursting) nearly drove me mad/mu

I've been asked to make media concerning the release of Shark Girl (coming in about a week! See what I did there) - and I think it's a fine idea. If no one ever asked me, I'd probably never promote anything, and live in a barrel that also was my clothes. But media maestro I am not - so I had the ide

I really thought that Trudeau’s speech the other day about tariffs and wanting to avoid a trade war and appealing to a historic friendship between Canada and the US was well done. It’s true, Canada and the US are mostly great neighbours, the longest undefended border in the world and all that. Canad

I was just sending this to someone and I thought, I do not know if I put this on here before. On Patreon. But I think you may like to watch it. When I went on tour with Ducks, I did this whole presentation at every stop. I brought my friend Peter MacInnis, who did music and other things to keep the
