Back to Dewey (MacDuff)

You don’t forget that puppies are hard, but you do sort of forget. I think to myself, I don’t remember Agnes being like this - but then I do remember lying in bed with the specific thought “have I made a mistake? I can’t do this.” Which turned out not to be true. But all the same - puppies.

Dewey MacDuff will be a good dog… umm eventually haha. I feel sad for the kids because they want to play with him and snuggle him but they are too young to really know how to not get bitten by him, which is his version of playtime fun. He just likes a finger, our Dewey. He likes whatever smells like feet so who knows where anyone’s shoes are at any time. He has been introduced to the chickens, and, they also hate him.

I love him anyway.

Hard relate to the raising of a toothy rascal of the born feral female feline variety at my place.

thanks so much for all of this, gotta love the puppy phase. From a person living in the 11th circle of hell to the south of Canada who needs something that makes her smile at least one time per day although that doesn't really do much for the continual state of rage. It does help though!!!

I'm sure you're getting more than enough recommendations, but I got serious puppy blues and the endless amount of resources on YouTube didn't help - there's just way too much and it's overwhelming! What really did help was going to puppy classes and getting the book "Puppy Start Right: Foundation Training for the Companion Dog" just nice to have a physical copy of something and if I ever needed to question what I was doing, I could reference that instead of spiraling on the Internet.

Even your dogs seem to have proud Scottish roots

Similar feelings to you for my cat, Babs. She's an all-black menace and a total nightmare to draw. Just a pair of eyes and a tongue that is too long to be legal.

When I was a kid, I accidentally melted part of my sister's Barbie by holding it next to a light bulb to charge up the glow-in-the-dark stars on her dress. We didn't have a lot of toys, and I felt horribly guilty that we would have to throw it away. My mom, a high school art teacher, was like, "She's not ruined! She's fine! There's nothing wrong with having disabilities." And that's how you deal with a Barbie with a missing half a hand and a melted thigh.

Perhaps a middle name is in the offing. My sister -in-law had a wire haired terrier named Homer. This quickly morphed into Homer Goddamnit.

This is sooooo relatable! Sadie is a four month old gremlin masquerading as a puppy. She bullies our other dog a little and definitely tries to bully our cats, which isn't wise. You'd think she'd learn by now 😆 she's struggling with potty training and I have to remind my husband that our 5 year old dog still struggles with it and we got her at roughly 6 months old. Sadie is just a lot. I love how you draw Dewey, btw!

OMG THE CUTENESS. God bless your Jobian patience with that little proto-dog-rascal-thing. These comics are gold. Thank you thank you so much. God I needed this smile!!

The way you draw him is incredible. His expressions, his physicality, his TEETH, it all has so much personality and is so fun to look at.

I still have a lot of clothes (now relegated to housewear only) with little holes in them from needle puppy teeth. A stressful time, even if he was ridiculously cute.

The smart ones are the ones that give you the most trouble as pups. We had a few black dogs growing up. We had a professional family photo done, and our black dog is just this black area on the photo... with a little tiny pink tongue sticking out. 🤣

I can empathize with Mary all too well. We got our first Scottie when I was about 7, and one of the first things he did was chew up the leg of my Skipper doll. After the initial upset, I wrapped her leg in Kleenex and tape and she became the "special" doll. He spent his early years confined to the kitchen behind baby gates and would nip at my feet whenever I came through, and I took to using the stairs and table as stepping stones to get past him. My mom was not best pleased.

I've had the very same Zoom experience, but in my case it was a kitten that had leapt onto my back with claws on all four feet! 💀

My kitten brought me a dead bird during a Zoom. Feathers EVERYWHERE...

Terrier puppies are basically furry crocodiles, only busier.

So cute! From someone who just got through the puppy phase with our dog, I watched a lot of Susan Garrett's videos on YouTube. She's a renowned dog trainer and her videos helped me so much.

Aww I love Dewey! Our pup is just 6 months old so this was highly relatable, especially the face-biting haha.

Oh Dewey, you are a loveable little shit! Meanwhile, Steve has been shuttling Pa's Crocs over to the neighbours and hauling back pieces of moose(?) carcass? So far we have 2 legs with feet attached, a lower jaw, a ribcage, a femur and a large chunk of hide. Our yard is a startling bone yard and Pa is barefoot.

K
Kate Beaton · January 26, 2026

Wow he is going to build his own Frankenstein’s monster! But a moose (?)

Basically our experience with our Lab/Dachshund mix: Crate training was going real good until we were too tired to set up her crate during a visit to the in-laws and let her sleep in the bed with us. After she knew that was an option, crate during bedtime became ScreamZone(tm). She now sleeps in the bed with us. Presumably with a similar little smile.

"Choose Your Battles" Ah, so true! That was my favorite of all of these. "He's done, like, a LOT of murders." LOL

We had a yellow lab who wanted to terrorize our cats. She came up to me one day with a HUGE cut on her nose, looking for sympathy. That had to hurt, but she learned after that...

Elizabeth Anderson · January 26, 2026

Oh my goodness. My dog also sleeps on my bed because I also decided sleep was more important. 😂

I love him?? Our dogs are seniors now and they’ve calmed down SO much and I catch myself looking at puppy pics of them and feeling sentimental, and then I remember how they were. Difficult puppies (that is to say, typical puppies) and I’m like Hm.

I love him too!
