S4E18: The Italian Job (1969)
This week on the Kill James Bond Podcast, we're joined by long-time friend, two-time guest, comedian and man with 'too many podcasts', Milo Edwards!
We're taking a jog down memory lane today with the daddest of dad movies, the italian job! Michael Caine stars as a thief released from prison in 1960s Gay England who, with the assistance of the biggest and gayest inmate, puts together a team of likely lads to steal several million pounds of gold from the Italians at the exact moment we crush them in the world cup.

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

The "ex-cum-guinated" bit makes me think of the Cannibal Corpse song "I Cum Blood." As George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher likes to say: "it sounds like fun 'til it happens to you."
"The great replacement bus robbery" absolutely got me, ah heck. Best regards from Finland where the national railway, VR, gets ambushed by both permafrost and heatwaves every year and then has to cut off sections of track to fix them, sometimes with very little warning.
In the Intro , were the Mafia showing respect for the man or the Lamborghini they murdered?
muppet joker is a deep cut
The only thing that pleases me more than hacking scenes with minidiscs is a hacking scene with reel to reel tape. Absolute peak.
always delighted to know that cars suffered and were killed in the making of a movie, especially when they're stupid luxury sportscars that people jack themselves off over. it's like if you watched indiana jones and then in the credits it told you "actual real-life nazis were melted in the production of this film"
I must be the 1000th person to say this but... before heist season ends can we have Bound?🙏
If you do get Michael Caine on the show, please ask him what it was like being directed by Steven Segal.
Abi edging the anti Mackem prejudice on this one... ye wind yer neck in, yer geordie slapper 😉
I remember getting an Italian Job in the back of n Olive Garden. The things we did with those bread sticks.
'Sam'! Omg yes! I thought I was the only one who saw that movie!
Fun fact btw- The prison they used to film the scenes in this is the same one they used to film ‘In the Name of the Father’ the Troubles Daniel Day Lewis one. It’s Kilmainham Gaol (Jail) in Dublin I believe
Does it really count as a heist when it’s more of a criminal sports game? Also I would love a crime Olympiads. Like this could be an event, another could be that sport in Florida where you have to outrun a cop, maybe do a Hudson Hawk like singing catburglary event.
Just remembered Michael Caine is in Miss Congeniality and if there's a bonus slot open while you still have Milo Edwards, Michael Caine Correspondent around that could be a good time (maybe? I haven't seen it in ages idk if it holds up.)
There an actual James Bond crossover in this movie as Noel Coward had a lifelong, crippling crush on Ian Flemming to the point where when they where all living as decadent Jamaican expats Flemming’s wife had to expressly say “please stop trying to fuck my husband” (meanwhile Coward’s actual partner was busy bankrupting him by staring in flop plays Coward put up the money for)
Unprovoked violence note - the dudes outside got bonked with clubs; the dudes in that little tank and the van with the gold got pulped into human salsa by the explosives they threw in there. Pasta sauce everywhere!
If I remember correctly, Croker's Aston Martin DB4 actually transitions into a Lancia Flaminia Convertible just before it's crushed. They lobbed some body panels onto it to make it look DB4-ish. There are some unconfirmed stories that suggest they did push the DB4 over, but it wasn't a convincing enough shot, so they did it again with the Lancia. With the E-Types, I think the convertible still exists and was restored. There's word of the same for the fixed-head, but the problem of reallocating license plates makes tracking this sort of thing a 'mare and period logging of VIN numbers and subsequent sloppy work by the DVLA means it's hard to work back. Both were bought for about £900 in period, still a princely sum for a car when a house was about £3500. The Minis pushed out the back of the bus were engineless shells. The ones that did the roof-top jump were kinked in half and returned to BMC. A lot of the cars probably returned to BMC, and knowing how they and later British Leyland operated, they would have been left to rot somewhere. A few survived though. But production went through them at such a rate that they started to run out and the team on hand were bodging them into running condition. French legend of the genre Rémy Julienne did much of the stunt work for this film, you'll know him from such iconic pieces as For Your Eyes Only (2CV chase), a View To A Kill (Renault 11 Chase), License to Kill (makes the semi-truck do a wheelie). The Fiat roof jump took weeks to plan and they did it as ground work first, calculating speeds and ramp angles before being satisfied they could make it. Once up, they figured it was wide enough to go three-at-once as opposed to Remy doing it three times and compositing the shot. The Lamborghini from the start was actually two cars, one a fine one that Lamborghini sold, and one that'd already been crashed. This has been the heat-induced knowledge dump of a classic motoring journalist who's more beers than strictly sensible into editing photos from Goodwood FoS.
I don't read all the comments, so they might already know this. The Grinch movie(s) are heist movies.
If we don’t get out of this church in 4 minutes we’re all getting fed spaghetti four times a day in Italian prison.
24:37 another case of the gang honing in on one listener when Nova says “Faggot Bryan” seeing as i am a Faggot named Bryan
If you just want the car chase, you can always watch MacGyver S1E3: Thief of Budapest, which just straight up splices in the whole Mini Cooper sequence into a completely unrelated plot.
So fun fact - my grandad made/designed the press tooling for the front bumper of the e type
devon speak your truth this movie’s a stinkburger
Nuke asshle
Wouldn't the term be "exseminated", as in the opposite of inseminated?
Inseminate comes from the Latin inseminare, to sow. While assuming the in- is interiorizing it could also be an intensifier of the verb seminare.
"I stan Michael Caine" Don't Google his views on the Miner's Strike then.
*only for his portrayal of Scrooge in the Muppets Christmas Carol.
I watched this at a university film club showing with some Italian students who were laughing loud at the Police. Not sure if its the Italian dialogue or whether Italian Police are unpopular and not often lampooned in films etc.
Milo returrrrrrrns!
Riley would be freaking out if the heist ran over one hour, but the soundtrack would bang.
If loving fat women is illegal, lock me up bay-beeeeeeee
You can't just throw a Muppet Joker reference in without warning a person!
Thank Dog I'm done eating lunch. Otherwise I might have choked on my food from Milo's asides.
It made sense to get rid of Italian and British cars by throwing them into rivers and seas because they dissolved in water
I hate it when I go in for my robbery appointment at the clinic and they ask what I'm thinking about while I jack loot
I think the intersection of fatphobia and misogyny should have earned this a 7 for misogyny
The prison from the start of the film is the prison from Paddington 2
It's been a long time since I watched this so definitely pleasantly surprised to find its a movie that's more gay than I remember.
The First Great Train Robbery (1978) is one that should definitely be on your list. A British movie made by Americans, and starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, it brings together a lot of KJB themes.
Australian excellence strikes again, we didn't decriminalise homosexuality until the 80's in most states and it was still illegal in Tasmania until 1997.
Unfortunately American excellence exceeds Australian in this case as it was illegal in some US states until 2003.
Not a dad, but you better believe I'm singing 'This is the self preservation society!'
Honestly, I would have expected that the small line about what boils down to the podcaster cadaver synode gets a bit more of a recognition.
When all you have is a Bulldozer, every problem looks like an oncoming Italian sportscar
Finding out that Abigail knows about the Muppet Joker caused me real psychic damage.
Abi continues to prove that her and I basically have the same Tumblr page
My 2000s panel-show-centered anglophilia paid off at 38:00. At one point, Bill Bailey was my favorite stand up comedian.
Insanely this podcast has just caused me to remember a time I was incited to swim in a weir while on a school trip (admittedly with a life jacket)
