This week behind the paywall, journalist and friend of the show Sasha Baker drops by to show us Shiva Baby, a movie about a young jewish woman having a series of extremely awkward social interactions.

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

This is like a horror movie except the cabin in the woods has plenty of road access and your car is full of petrol. Just run away! Say you need to take an important phone call, go outside, then when nobody is looking run to the hills! EDIT: In fact, she was given multiple outs! When she got cut and when she was covered in coffee - either time was an excuse to leave to clean up with the promise that you might come back but people will probably forget (or you got "caught in traffic" or something.)
hey, now you're going back into Heists, y'all should really check out the film of the same name from 2001. danny devito! gene hackman! delroy lindo! an incredibly complex, open-to-interpretation plot! incredibly weird yet compelling dialogue! written and directed by david mamet! seriously this thing is a slept-on gem https://youtu.be/cliSJ5splwc?si=nAiUjG4oSyH9L5bu
I do not understand sex work. If the point is just to get your rocks off, then just hook up with someone or do it on your own? If you really want to do it with someone, then I can't imagine how you're supposed to separate the intimacy or the sort of mutual possessiveness that sex involves from the act. That's just how emotions work. If you're just having sex with them for the physical pleasure and nothing else, then what's the point? Turning sex into a transactional thing just completely ruins it, and makes everything worse. I'm not going to not have at least some sympathy for the client, because the unequal relationship between them and the sex worker is what's enabling and encouraging them to think they have more of a connection or just privilege to the worker than they do. And if you're married, just don't be a client. Just don't cheat.
Religious movies: Truman Show (Christianity / Satanism / Luciferianism movie) Lucky (2017) (Buddhism)(Harry Dean Stanton)
Would 'The Craft' count as a film for religion season? I love that movie..
Votes in, LFG!
I'm reading the title of the movie in the same cadence as "vegas baby vegas" and I don't know why
Loved this discussion! The chat at the end about "movies that don't have any acting them" and "gallery installations" made me think of Robert Bresson's 'The Pickpocket' and his notion of not using actors, but Human Models who were to act as little as possible, to allow the cinematography to be the language.
I hope you do Freud's Last Session sometime in religion season bc it was all set up to be excellent and it's So Bad
Best episode in ages, and this in a run of absolute crackers. One of the top podcasts out there :)
All service workers should be allowed to kill one customer a day, no questions asked. This includes sex workers.
Listening to the final scene: November! No!
This is our equivalent of dipshits thinking Patric Bateman is a cool guy at the end of America Psycho.
I'm just watching the movie now because it sounded interesting. Usually I try to watch them before the podcast if I think I'd like them. Anyway I just caught something that I don't think was made explicit in the episode. He was her only client. That sort of enhances the dynamic of the whole situation.
KJB: Vote for us to get an award. Me: Eh, does an award even matter really? KJB: Look, we want to tell the establishment to fuck off and also Free Palestine. Me: Ok, I'm in.
Re: wardrobe issues at mourning rituals. My trousers split open completely when I bent down to greet an elderly relative at my dad's funeral. At that point I was tired enough that I just laughed and made her really uncomfortable. Despite not really wanting to be around many people I had to announce we were holding a wake because my mom booked too large a room and was worried about it looking empty and it got crowded enough that we had to spill into a balcony. At that point I had just started dating someone and we hadn't told anyone so we agreed that it wasn't the best place to tell my mom so she just pretended to be a friend but my neighbor who is also my friend's mom was there and she unknowingly sold us out. An ex girlfriend who had been very close to my dad and was still a very dear friend was there. She was extremely supportive and a huge help but it made both my gf jealous and her boyfriend so anxious that he just bailed without letting us know and then they broke up. It was a weird day.
Parts of this reminded me of the movie "keeping the faith" which might be a good one for religion season. There's a scene where a rabbi is on a date with his secret girlfriend and basically his whole congregation shows up
"Cunted up" incredible
So I tried to vote just now and there weren't any categories having to do with podcasts. I also didn't see "kill James Bond" anywhere as something I could vote for
It's under the creator shortlist category, there's a bunch of lifestyle stuff and product endorsements, I think Canon sponsored the awards or something. The entertainment podcast section is pretty far down the list. You might be able to find it with control+f
Did anyone else notice that Danielle’s hair went from poker-straight in the morning when she’s having sex with Max, to kind of curly (more stereotypically ‘Jewish’) when she’s at the shiva? I’m not quite sure of the logistics of how that would happen- typically if you straighten your hair in the morning I’d imagine it would stay straight all day- but I feel like there’s some subtextual meaning there I can’t quite explicate.
if it's humid it would make your hair curl back up throughout the day ime
Religion season should never end. Also think Mother! would be a good companion to this movie
Yesssss that would be fantastic! I'd love to see them cover Heretic too, as a movie about just fucking Acting™
Do you have any plans to watch the Get Smart movie? Either the one from 2008 or 1980. Sounds like something that'd be up your alley and I'm a little surprised I haven't heard you guys talk abt Get Smart at all lol
Sure, when you three support sex workers, it's feminism. But when I do it, it's cheating .
the moment November said "you have been villified by this community" i couldnt help but think, 'Oh, Transitioning must work like faction armor, nhs aggressed on sight.'
Me, for roughly the first 25 minutes of this podcast: "Shiva baby, huh? Like, one of those babies who's thought to be a reincarnation of a Hindu god because they were born with traits of them? That sounds cool. They're pronouncing it strangely, though. "It's not like the mourning 'rituals' are random, though. There's REASONS for the low chair thing! This must be a really multicultural movie. We've spent all this time on the Jewish characters, and haven't even gotten to the Hindu family yet. Can't wait to meet this baby and find out what he has to do with the Hindu god Sh... OH THAT KIND OF SHIVA!"
Exactly my thought process.
alright my most important feeling abt this episode is can I tell Brad lander about the end of it. the rest of the feelings are just ‘conservadox-raised US lesbian experiences nuance listening to reform and/or goyische UK folks talking about this film specifically’
This movie expresses some very specific emotions and one big one is “attending a wake/shiva for your husband’s aunt’s partner whom you have never met” which was a wild time for me personally
Have any of you seen Lucky Number Sleiven? It's one if my favorite movies, but thinking back on it there might be some less than good themes. Still, it was stylish as hell. Kevin hartnett, Bruce Willis, Morgan freeman, Ben Kingsley and Lucy Liu
excited for Disobedience which is the type of Jewish community I grew up in (And good to know I was right about 'May you live a long life' being a European Jewish thing I am from the 'may their memory be a blessing' part of the Jewish world)
I’m 3 seconds in but this is my Super Bowl (? I think. better event suggestions welcome). top ten anime crossovers (KJBxThis Specific Iteration of My Culture) of all time
I remain under a minute in I paused to focus on typing but Also: you guys should do Network (1976) at some point
Hell yeah, Francesca Cacace aka The Italian Nanny mention!
Also for some reason the Italian dub turned her mom into her aunt
definitely one of my favourite films but also FUCK it's the most stressful movie I've ever fucking seen. it's so damn good tho like please for the love of god watch it
Done & BOOM
Now I'm trying to figure out who I heard talk about this movie because usually if I'm watching/listening to movie discussions, it's either KJB or RLM, and I don't think it was RLM lol
ABSOLUTELY joining in on the "undiagnosed dad" train. ESPECIALLY the bit about "he would just get very angry if plans changed and just go nonverbal for a bit."
I heard that and lightning struck, I was like "oh shit when did Abi meet my dad?"
Voted it would be great to see yall cause A Scene, just don't get like double oed. This movie I literally could not finish it. I got up & stresswalked with so much anxiety I left the house & did not return until it was over i think Fran Drescher was unchanged in Mexico but like she just read Mexican when dubbed, so much so I picked up yiddishisms from watching the show not knowing them to be anything but words
Dome Leave: CONFIRMED
It is fascinating getting an insight into Jewish culture through this and 'A Serious Man'. My own parents are atheists and I was sent to a lightly Protestant school (which was what you did if you were an atheist parent in 1980s/90s Ireland) but through just wider cultural osmosis and extended family I was at least familiar with Catholicism and even today where I'm anostic leaning more believer I kind of instinctively identify Catholic (hey I was baptised one...) On the other had I don't have much experience of Judaism, except through film. It is all so cool to learn more.
This is the movie that got me on Letterboxd. I love it so much. It's the most cathartic anxiety inducing movie
Episode art making me feel very normal thank you
Voted!! My mom definitely fits the bill of undiagnosed boomer [autism].
My vote has been received 🫡
OOH it's the Rachel Sennott hour! Would thoroughly recommend Bottoms to anyone who's not seen it. A deeply fun, idiotic film.
Hard back the love for Bottoms you've summed it up perfectly
*Podcast begins* ..."ator of the year"
this is the quality product that we're asking you to vote for
