Don’t guess your way to growth: How Micha.Stocks grew a loyal community on Patreon

You don’t need to go viral to grow on Patreon. You need clarity, trust, and a workflow that helps you learn faster than last month.

Four and a half years ago, Micha.Stocks, who runs one of the largest Hebrew-language finance communities online, started posting finance education videos to close a simple gap: real-time U.S. market news wasn’t reaching his audience. A few months in, he noticed a pattern. His membership stats were growing rapidly, and wanted to better understand what these members loved in particular, or how to continue replicating his success. Here’s the story of what he did.

The problem: guessing the way to growth

You might recognize one of these:

  • You’re experimenting, but not sure what’s actually working

  • You’re adding tiers or perks without clear data on what resonates

  • You want to grow your earnings without feeling like you’re marketing to your audience

Micha knew he didn’t want to experiment with the trust fans had put in him by signing up for membership. That meant:

  • No affiliate links

  • No hype-driven promotions

  • Clear tier value

  • A subscription platform he could stand behind

Having worked around data during his finance career, Micha knew he needed to find the trends in his data and have an engine for his business that could adapt and respond to his growth. In short, he wanted a way to grow that replaced guesswork with clarity, without compromising the trust he was building with his community.

The tactic: simplify, then iterate

Instead of adding complexity, Micha simplified his business to three rules, and kept testing strategies within them so that he wasn’t guessing.

  1. His core value: build around community

Within months of starting his YouTube channel, Micha saw repeat viewers in his livestreams. Instead of hosting more of them, or posting more videos, he created a dedicated space for discussion. “You’re one person with 24 hours,” he says. “A community multiplies that.”

    On Patreon, that looked like:

    • Consistent daily communication through posts to get fans chatting in the comments

    • Ability to chat with other fans tied to higher tiers of membership

    • Making upgrades feel like progression, not pressure

If you’re just getting started, this could be as simple as:

    • Encouraging member-to-member interaction, whether through Community Chats, Live, or just in comments on your posts

    • Clarifying what makes each tier different, especially when it comes to connecting with community

  2. Turn promotions into loyalty

For years, Micha avoided running discounts, but experimented with increasing his annual membership discount during Black Friday. To his surprise, it behaved less like a sale and more like a loyalty program. Revenue per member dipped slightly, but retention improved – resulting in more sustained income in the long run as the base of the business.

Instead of asking “How can I spike growth?” he asked “How can I increase long-term commitment?” If you’re looking to grow your earnings while deepening loyalty from your community, this might look like:

    • Testing an annual option to see if your fans are interested

    • Encouraging upgrades instead of only chasing new signups

    • Looking at retention before acquisition

  3. Use productivity tools for insights, then iterate

With the right tools, creators can spot patterns faster and make growth decisions with more confidence, all while staying grounded in what matters to their audience. Six months ago, Micha wanted to increase his earnings without reducing any of the value his members received from membership.

Micha took a two-pronged approach, combining data from Patreon with insights from his other platforms to get a complete picture of what was working. First, he used Patreon Insights to identify earnings trends across his posts and understand how those posts were driving audience growth. Then, to make sure he hadn't missed anything, he packaged anonymized earnings and membership data from Patreon and his other publishing platforms and ran it through AI tools to surface patterns — with guardrails built in. Those guardrails included explicit instructions like:

    • Don’t suggest affiliate links

    • Don’t just tell me to “sell more”

    • Focus on retention and sustainability

The analysis surfaced an insight: higher-tier members on his Patreon churned less. So he:

    • Refined how tiers were priced and positioned to make upgrades feel more compelling

    • Improved his About section to clearly call out what fans get out of being a paid member

The result? A visible shift in retention trends. Importantly, using tools like AI is helping Micha analyze data faster to support the insights behind his creative work. The perspective, judgment, and voice? Still his.

The proof: steady growth

Since implementing these strategies, Micha’s growth has compounded. His earnings are up 55% since this time last year. No paid marketing, no aggressive pivots, just clear value and thoughtful experimentation.

While his Patreon community operates in Hebrew, the systems behind it — tier clarity, rewarding loyalty, and more tools in his toolkit — translate across niches and languages. We’ve seen similar patterns from:

  • Podcasters like Swiftologist refining tier benefits

  • Authors like Chef Kenji encouraging free members upgrade to a paid tier on their Patreon

  • Filmmakers like Noclip using data to clarify what their members actually value

What you can try this month

Whether you have 2 or 200,000 members, here are some places to start:

  • Study your last 3 months of membership data: any patterns? Check out which tiers have the highest retention, the frequency of your posts, or what posts get the most attention through Post Insights.

    • In addition to what you find in your Insights tab, use an AI tool (or a spreadsheet) to summarize your retention data and spot trends as they happen

  • Rewrite one tier description to make the value clearer. For best practices, check out 10 quick tips for setting up or optimizing your membership tiers.

  • Test one upgrade incentive for your most engaged members, like revisiting your annual membership discounts in your Autopilot settings.

Is anyone else finding that their “quips” and regular posts are reaching no one?? My metrics say my quips are being shown to one or two individuals. I post the same content that gets engagement on other platforms. @Patreonforcreators any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I’ve had trouble reaching new people in the past, but I feel like with Quips things are really changing. I appreciate this posts because it’s helpful to see what is working for others. I totally agree that going viral shouldn’t be the goal. There are some things here I can definitely use and will try to look into. I only have one tier, so that limits what I can offer (I can’t focus on getting upgrades, except from free members). But the point of my channel is that what people pay, is not necessarily to get the content I post, it’s to fund the free mental fitness with the arts events I host. So the content, is basically a bonus and a thank you to everyone that contributes and pays it forward. This means that the way I use patreon is a little different; making it a little more complicated to knowing how to “market” it. Anyway, thanks for posts like these and the encouragement. Hope this helps lots more people ⚡️😊

If you’d like, I can take a look at your business model and see if there are different additional ways you can monetize - while still preserving the heart and soul of what you do 😊

Love how this normalizes having a clear direction and paying attention to analytics. Sometimes all it can feel like “everyone else” is doing is trying to go viral for the sake of it 😅 The tried and tested way still works. Kudos!

I agree you don’t need to go viral — trust and clarity are what actually convert. But let’s be real: without reach, nothing grows. You still need visibility first, then retention does the heavy lifting. What I like is the focus on simplicity and retention. Most creators overcomplicate instead of improving what already works. I’m not fully sold on avoiding “marketing” though — you can sell without losing trust. Main takeaway: retention is underrated, but it only works if people find you in the first place.

I think what’s gotten fuzzy is mostly the “how” of getting the visibility and gaining the views and reach. More and more though it’s seeming like we’re tired of gimmicks and over-perfection (is that an appropriate phrase? 😅) and we all just want to take a chill pill and be human again. So it connects when that’s what we see and feel from others. Re: selling without losing trust, I think many of us are plagued by the image of the salesman who hard sells, without prior understanding of your specific situation or need. A part of us has internalized that that is what ‘sales’ is. When really, at it’s heart it’s all about offering a solution to someone with a problem you can solve/desire you can fulfill

Was it helpful? yes and no. I definitely made some notes and got new ideas. But recommending "Testing an annual option for your most engaged tier"? I would love to offer the annual membership to only a special (my most enganged) tier. But I can set it either on or off for all tiers. And 2nd, which AI tools would you suggest or which ones did Micha use? I tried analyzing my data with chatgpt but it didn't bring me good insights.

What kind of questions did you ask ChatGPT to help you understand your analytics? Are you on a free or paid plan?
