S3E3.5: Hunt for the Wilderpeople
This week, further to our Solidarity Position of resolutely pretending America has never made a film, we're checking out a New Zealand production! Will our hearts be warmed by this tale of two misfits on the run, or will Taika Waititi's complete inability to not cast his friends somewhat undercut the movie's condemnation of the racialised abuse endemic to the foster care system?
To help us get to the bottom of this question we've brought on friend of the show Ross Palethorpe, a youth worker and certified Kiwi!

THE MOVIES ARE ON STRIKE!
SAG-AFTRA is on strike for a number of reasons, from pay for streaming residuals, to the rights to own your own appearance, to the right to not have AIs trained off your work.
So if you've got a few spare pennies, why not chip in to help keep movies from becoming Shit Forever.

IATSE workers are struggling at the moment as well, as they can't work during the current strike actions but aren't themselves on strike- the Motion Picture Television Fund is a 501(c)3 charity that provides a range of assistance. https://mptf.com
Additionally, SAG and WGA members started another 501(c)3 charity called The Union Solidarity Coalition - https://tusctogether.com
And if you're in the UK, the UCU could still do with some help

This film has significantly different vibes after the whole Tom Philips thing
Oh shit they did mention it
I was in driving around NZ as a tourist from aus a few years before this movie came out and we happened to drive past that army base paddock as that tank with a Maori hanging out the top was smashing along next to us for serval kilometres and I was like that's was wild and random. When I saw tanks in this movie after that I lost my mind pointed at screen and yelled "see!"
Listening through as I am late to this party, but...big same, November.
While on the topic of indigenous films, getting a native podcaster on as a guest and doing Thunderheart would be legendary. It's Bad but it sure as hell has a lot to say about masculinity
Late to those and catching up! At one point there's mention of taking a bunch of 'troubled' boys into the bush on camp being a super normal thing to do. Across the road in Australia, about once a year one our various current affairs programs will feature this very type of camp! The idea being what if we teach these boys how to survive in the wild and talk about their feelings? So apparently it is indeed normal here?
Honestly surprised to hear the KJB crew say "disappear into the bush" so many times and not a single one was a double entendre
Catching up on a backlog of KJBs so am in with this... https://fuckyeahworldoftaika.tumblr.com/post/187920996342/taika-waititi-and-lin-manuel-miranda-doing-what
The cameo by Taika as the priest at the funeral is legitimately my favorite part of the movie. I first saw this in the depths of the beginning of the pandemic, and the absurdity of it made me laugh harder than I had for a long time. We even incorporated his “sermon” into the reading that our officiant did for our wedding in place of anything religious. He’s tricky like that, Jesus!
1:24:54 if your looking for another nz movie i've heard good things about "goodbye pork pie" never actually seen it but everyone here of a certain age always says things like "what you haven't seen it" and you should go watch it its great" and the like soo
55:34 probably because the book its based on was published in 1986 so im guessing a lot of the ahem "acceptable stereotypes in the film probably also if not come from that time then are influenced by it regards the parliament protests i have to say i was more of the treat them like the toddlers they are being and dont you know do a nz waco and as for threats meh i mean we can all ways elect new mps if it ever does come to it
If you're still taking suggestions, may I recommend Minnal Murali? It's a bollywood superhero movie, I think is quite good and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks for your work 👍
My grandma had a pretty sick bell collection. She told me never to touch them, but you damn well know I did.
Just watching Conspiracy Theory, I think you guys would have a lot to talk about
Have y’all considered doing Enter the Dragon (1973) starring Bruce Lee? It’s about 50% bond parody and they make one of the lead actors look like young Connery
Weren't taika waititi and lin Manuel Miranda both involved in making Moana.
Honestly, I thought the Nonce you all were hunting together was Roger Moore
Another not sure if this is struck suggestion but I’d truly love to see you guys do an episode on “Bound” by the wachowski sisters
When you started talking about grandma's figurines I started daydreaming about our generation hitting their 80s and showing their grand kids a curio full of Warhammer 40k minis.
If you’re looking for another New Zealand film, consider The Dead Lands (2014). It’s something of a Māori-language Apocalypto/kung fu film. It whips.
Alice’s little FEV reference amused me greatly for some reason.
Not sure if it’s struck, but if it’s not, I’d love you guys to watch the Wicker Man (the 1973 one).
Since dangerous porcine creatures both natural and supernatural were mentioned (along with the film itself), Princess Mononoke?
I would like to recommend Jet Li's Unleashed
I think it's more of an Abi pick than a Devon pick, but if we're allowed to give our inputs, I'd love to see y'all talk about Atonement. If everyone's ready for a good, solid, cry.
Firstly, great episode, always love a Guest Secondly, and on the loose topic of colonialism and nonces from this episode, have you ever considered doing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? I don’t know if it’s struck work, but I was recently reminded of it and it’s truly uniquely British and Bizarre. Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Albert Broccoli, Ken Adam, vague xenophobia and one of the nonciest characters to ever Grace the screen. No fucking idea what it says about masculinity but it’s like a Bond reunion
Am I remembering it wrong or is Castle Vulgaria a bit fetishy?
i don't know actors' names and spent the entire episode thinking "wow, sam elliot was in this movie? he must have been able to do a really good nz accent i guess"
There's only three types of place names in Anglo colonies: "Whatever the locals called it before we killed them", "Some town or person back home" and "Excessively literal description of the place"
Kind Hearts and Coronets could be a fun movie to do a podcast episode about, for a film from the 40s the comedy has aged pretty well and it still manages to be a fun time, plus you get 8 distinct Alec Guinnesses!
Devon being really cheerful and bubbly in the outro was an unexpected treat.
in case dev still hasnt picked: malcolm (1986). australian movie, actually directed by my neighbour growing up. autistic-coded man gets fired from the tram service and starts building devices for robbery with his ex-con housemate.
Sam Neil in this is the model of rural NZ masculinity, I have very complex relationship with this type of guy. Don’t think I could watch this film the same way post transition. Also New Zealand mentioned!
Good episode. Suggestion: The Battle for Algiers! Great movie that was made in newly independent Algeria. Amazing and incredible view inside a guerilla war and how an insurgency functions. I wish the Army would've shown this movie instead of a million power point slides. I'd be willing to talk about this more if you want a shitty Army infantryman's perspective Also good choice would be Patlabor 2, subject Alice to some Anime about Japan's post-80s malaise, the relationship between government and the JSDF, military coups, the USA's patronizing position, AND MORE! Plus GORGEOUS animation.
You guys should do Parasite at some point, much to say about masculinity and class (I don’t think it counts as struck but if it does please disregard this comment)
You got it!!! Thank you!! <3
The unified theory of Lins Manuel-Miranda isn't complete until Alice acknowledges that John Darnielle is the same thing for sad white kids
the nonce they were hunting was jame bomnd
