When November said "Speaking of taking opium" for a brief moment I thought she was throwing to ads in the Robert Evans style, lol.
Trannie Oakley had me doubled over in the kitchen laughing
A wagon full of suffragettes.
Trannie Oakley took me the fuck out oh my goddd
For another great (fictional) example of "How intimidating a guy with a gun" works out, see the bathroom scene in Full Metal Jacket.
“Shoot for the moon, if you miss at least you’ll land among the stars”
Right?! I came here to say this as well.
That guy who who Wyatt strongarms the game from is Billy Bob Thornton. How Alice, Abi and Devon didn't mention that is semi-criminal.
I've been catching up on my backlog and only just now heard Devon chuckle and compliment my name. Thank you! Made my day.
This movie isn't about fascism, it's about stache-ism.
Largely unrelated but, I'd love to get to hear y'all do a bonus episode on The Good, The Bad, The Weird.
Fun fact: my childhood family pet was named Curly Bill after the outlaw.
Listening to this episode again and I know they won’t cover it because it’s like 6 hours total but I would love to know what KJB think of Trigun Stampede and the stories it tells through the medium of space cowboys/gunslingers It’s also Quite Gay
Plz do Bone Tomahawk. That shit is so bonkers in a way I still can't tell is good or bad.
Also this is a wrong opinion but I did like the 1994 film Bad Girls.
This might be a bit of a 3am thought but I'm now thinking about how a fascist society requires the existence of violent predatory men and also how often I see this in terf rhetoric. Hmm.
That really good line from Doc Holiday was latter used by Calib, the protagonist of the Monolith FPS called BLOOD. I can best describe Calib as what if you fused Clint Eastwood, Duke Nukem, and the Crypt Keeper from Tapes from the Crypt. That sounds way too edgy, but the voice actor is just so enjoyable. Second game is bad, but still has some good lines. https://youtu.be/LSgLQzjfj00
Ooooh just heard Alice say she wants to cover The Quick and the Dead so yaaay!
It took me a while to realize this was not “The Quick and the Dead” and I was like “where is Sharon Stone!?”. Another movie full of guys we like to see. I really hope you cover it!
As a southern accent haver, i am deeply conflicted by Plantation Devon
Fucking love Devon’s deep cut steely Dan pull!
I'm kind of surprised that this is Alice's favorite Western movie because I really feel that there a great many other, better Westerns out there. That's not to say that this is an essentially bad movie or that she's bad for liking it, I just didn't much see the appeal. But yeah I generally found its efforts at being 25% a 90s romance movie just a complete failure. Like, to give an example, with the main plot I really didn't have a solid idea for how things were gonna end. I didn't know who would die or make it out alive--heck, the O.K. corral fight feels like it would be another movie's third act climax and I think that's good for it. However, the absolute *moment* Love Interest (name forgotten) enters the scene, it's just glaringly obvious she and Wyatt are going to end up together at the end. And in every scene that she enters, you know the scene is going to end from the first line she is given. Her character is so remarkably shallow, it feels like the clearly very talented screenwriters switched from communicating the plot through coded radio messages to flag semaphore from five feet in front of you. I would just get up and go get water when she entered the same scene as Wyatt. Beyond that, my other gripe is that I didn't fully realize what was a montage until you all called it out. This might be because montages have been passe long enough that they were a joke in Seinfeld that I just don't get the cue for it, but the last one in particular was just downright confusing. You think you're watching a cut to a cohesive chase scene but the characters just jump around, with Wyatt going from standing and shooting a guy to suddenly on a horse without any strong indicator to the viewer why this change is happening. It's just downright weird to me. p.s. i hope you guys do Sicario and No Country for Old Men
If they do Lone Star I’ll die of joy. It only gets more relevant with time.
Holy shit the pun names Alice and Abi gave themselves at the beginning were so funny, I love a good pun.
I found myself hoping you cover 'Unforgiven'.
One of the best cold opens. Thank you Devon for making that the teaser, it finally convinced me to pay.
I am Hollering as loud as I can
While you're on a neowestern run it would be amazing to hear you go over Dead Man (1995)
the tuberculorizz
What are the chances yinz can do Come and See in a respectful insightful manner?
Have you considered "The Salvation" 2014, a Danish Western full of guys you love to see.
Quick & The Dead is a great western where a woman actually gets to do stuff. Another option is Meek’s Cutoff. I’d also recommend The Harder They Fall for women & POC in lead rolls, and 3:10 to Yuma (2007) for some good masculinity talk.
Glad to hear Alice mention The Quick and the Dead, because I was on my way here to pitch it. It's weird, has an absurd cast list, and for sure has some gender in it.
“Im your huckleberry” is referencing huckleberry being poisonous. Doc was volunteering to try and kill him when he said that. Nothing to do with huck fin.
Never got that thank you!
consumption is hot.
Ooo power of the dog, yes plz
Back to dropping Mountain Goats song titles in conversation just to see if anyone notices then, are we Alice?
Nice good western episode, hey why not watch another DEFINITELY good and DEFINITELY not far too long and meandering western heavens gate (it does contain a rollerskate dance sequence and also John hurt)
Devon on Bone Tomahawk, taking the same line as one test pilot for the XF-84 Thunderscreech- "You aren't big enough and there aren't enough of you to make me do it."
Val Kilmer rolling in like yo this is the bad bitch I pulled by being kinda gay with it and also having tuberculosis.
History confirmation: the earliest forms of American organized crime are way earlier and way cooler than cattle rustlers, it was *rum runners*. There was an entire network of motherships hanging out off the coast that smaller boats would come out and buy some and bring it to shore. It's part of the reason for the creation of the revenue cutter service, one of like 9 orgs that eventually coalesced into the coast guard.
Holy shit extremely excited for this lol Tombstone is some serious masc energy
Kurt Russell's son Wyatt was in "Under The Banner Of Heaven" and was very good in it
ACAB (All Cows Are Boys)
best cold open this season, easy
Absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time!
But oh boy is it ever a product of the early 90's.
Considering that this is an episode full of reports of guys we love to see, how in the world did not a single podcaster at least recognize Billy Bob Thornton?
Every time I relisten to this EP I love remembering cuck bartender is Thornton
I would like to point out that not only is Stephen Lang great in Avatar, he's great in literally everything that he's been in, as far back as the Michael Mann tv show Crime Story.. One of my most favorite guys guys to see.
Crime Story! that show was big in our Chicagoland household
I'd really like to draw a through-line from this to another crypto-fascist western property that draws upon the real life historical figure of Wyatt Earp, the Canadian contemporary urban fantasy syfy show of Wynonna Earp. It also continues this film's preoccupation with "Exegetic Chains" by having the titular Wynonna not only be a direct blood relation of the long-dead Wyatt, but also literally cursed to either repent for his mistakes or to repeat them. Although it doesn't have terribly many trans allegories in the text of the show, it is very notable for a canon on-screen main cast lesbian romance (yay!) between two skinny white girls (less yay), one of whom is a cop (boo). And at no point does the cop ever want to stop being a cop (more boo). And the singular black character on the show's main cast asked to be written out of the show in the 3rd season (yikes). Predictably, it has a die-hard fan base of queer whyte women who didn't raise much of a fuss about the show's valorization of cops during the George Floyd protests of 2020. Which sucks, because mass-audience shows with canonical queer couples are still so rare that creators have to fight tooth and nail for their mere existence, and they are only allowed to do so if the queer characters hold up other racist power structures.
Tranny Oakley and Cock Holiday I am PISSING MYSELF
I thought it was "Clock Holliday?"
Man now I really am hoping for a Yojimbo episode
#JusticeforRingo ACAB includes the Earps and their damnable federal overreach and you can't convince me otherwise
Just watched this last night and was thinking it'd be a great episode
Is the Patreon RSS feed broken? I don't see any episodes listed since 2022.
