Should have just watched Shaolin Soccer...
This is one of my favorite films, and was my impetus (along with The Raid) to join the Patreon
I wouldn't call this Ready Player One (Chinese) because that implies China doesn't actually have a culture and is just a bunch of pop-culture sludge
Calling anything Ready Player One (Nationality) is an insult to that nationality. I wouldn't even describe Ready Player One as Ready Player One (American), because even if it produced Ready Player One, at least America has enough of a culture to have also produced some of what Ready Player One regurgitates - and also all of the stuff that Ready Player One *pointedly refuses to* regurgitate.
I am glad to have finally find that someone else who saw The Princess Bride as an adult and didn't like it
just watched it, i agree with devon, the start of the movie owns, once the cgi gets to the insane power level i can take it or leave it
May I put forward the Bollywood movie Haider? Retelling of Hamlet set against the backdrop of the Kashmir conflicts of 1995.
In the vein of Spy Kids, I suggest Baby Geniuses (1999) because from what I remember of watching it as a child it is absolutely insane
Did Alice literally just do "The CPC ruthlessly forces people to live in nicer housing"?
Well, all those jokes about the queen being dead in the past just paid off
Despite legitimate criticisms my enjoyment of this film remains unmitigated. As ever I greatly appreciate the research done by one third of the podcast, cause I had no idea about the amount of in jokes and references
I lived KFH as a kid but I’ve just realised that the only remembrance I have is the opening 20 mins where all the characters are introduced and end after the first big fight… the rest is a bit meh
The reaction I had to Abby saying she doesn't like The Princess Bride is comparable only to the reaction I had while listening to the Lions Led By Donkeys series about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide
if you do an anime thing please do Samurai Champloo perhaps
Interesting to hear a critique like this of KFH in the wake of the Anglophone reception of RRR.
I find it interesting that you compare it negatively to DBZ. Because me and my friends where convinced this director would be perfect for a live action DBZ Movie. Also I was told The Toad represents ignorance in the face of the Buhddah. Need conformation though because I only read this once
Yeah it's one of my favourite movies, I'm a fan of spooky kung fu and I realize I don't get the depth of the wordplay but that's not my problem.
This movie made a huge impact on me when I saw it and I believe it still works super well for someone who cannot speak Mandarin or Cantonese and doesn't have a super deep Kung Fu movie knowledge.
I’m not sure you can claim the film destroyed Chow’s career? His films never reached this level again in the west but he’s made multiple record-breaking films in the Chinese language market in the last 15 years. I lived in China in the early-mid 2010s and his films killed it at the box office and were constantly played on TV.
Agreed he broke records with Journey to the West Conquering the Demons and then again with the sequel.
Back when I first got a DVD player Hong Kong movies were my special interest for a while. While there was so much I love about those films the humor would make me cringe again and again. At best it's just incredibly broad, at worst it's really fucking bigoted. I never really got along with Stephen Chow movies, I remember having Shaolin Soccer hyped up to me for so long and then really disliking it.
29:36 "These days, you can be arrested simply for being a kung fu master." Pretty sure that was the plot of Ip Man.
Having seen many kung fu movies (both classic and terrible) before watching Kung Fu Hustle, I'm fully behind Devon on this one when they tell Abi she watched it wrong. EDIT: Abi relentlessly missing bits is really funny, though.
A rare “Abi is the Heel“ episode
I m from Hong Kong and I don’t know anyone who has watched more kung fu movies that KJB
Original Hustler
