Episode 29.5: Shoot Em Up

This episode is genuinely one of our best, I think.
It's a deep dive into a movie that just isn't really very good, but the director and writer had such passion that it's hard not to feel kinship with the guy.
Also, we finally put forth the central point of the podcast: It's gay to cum.

This movie made me realize that the Marquis de Sade would have absolutely been a trans woman. Or, at the very least, a femboy.

But I thought that Tom Clancy and David Hasselhoff won the Cold War.

Oh no. I used to like this film. Abigail is totally right about it being an egg film.

When I say the laugh I provided for “breastmilk chicken nuggets” was the hardest I’d laughed in weeks, I mean it.

I watched Morbius and all I got out the experience was contempt for Jared Leto.

Another movie with a bunch of random moments that made me want to hear your take on Grosse Point Blank...

I fiirst thought this was Free Fire, but that doesn't have Paul Giamatti in it. Now I've seen Shoot Em Up and I don't think it was 80 minutes well spent, but the podcast truly made up for it

Movie suggestion: Wanted! It's like the grown-up's version of Stormbreaker

Suing the hosts because I was doing an interval on the treadmill when the “chicken nuggets” bit started and I nearly fucking died

the way all the mid-aughts manchild edginess of this film reminds me of The Boondock Saints... which is itself probably a good candidate for the show!

If I can make a suggestion for a future bonus episode, but this list of fictional James Bond movies from a collaborative writing project about a world where America became communist in 1933: https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/reds-a-revolutionary-timeline.48563/post-14146160

made it through the entire hour without accepting a single point (well, okay, the misogyny is really really overdone). shoot 'em up is the most flawless work of parody ever made. the incoherent conspiracy that's simultaneously left, right, and left wing again, smith's mindless violence that's actually acknowledged through the road rage scene...it's all gold.

Awesome episode, though that AMA post from the director towards the end has broken me. May be the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. (Ok maybe I’m exaggerating a little but)

I actually loved this because I went through the same experience as Abby. When this movie came out in 2007, I loved it. I used to say it was an example of a good movie with no plot. But then I watched it again recently and had to grapple with how much my tastes and sensibilities have changed.

honestly it sounds like the director of this movie listened to too much Alex Jones; the combination of a conspiracy centered on elected Democrats, a reflexive opposition to gun control legislation and his libertarian-ish but otherwise completely underdeveloped politics make me think that he based this movie on an uncritical absorption of several hours of InfoWars nonsense

B
Ben Schwabe · April 14, 2022

This movie is 100% pro gun control. The idea of a popular Democrat running to the left while governing to the right is so firmly based in reality it's painful. I might be one of the few listeners to remember the Clinton years well, but the idea the a Democrat would be a lying sock of shit who didn't actually believe in anything isn't nihilistic, it's just reality.

It’s not like a movie that’s basically two hours of just one type of activity has to be bad. Fury Road is essentially a two hour car chase, and it’s phenomenal.

A
AkselA · April 8, 2022

I was thinking to myself why the Crank movies are so good, while this is so bad. I don't have an answer

So everyone is saying this movie hates women because the bad guy is a sexist pig? He's the bad guy.

T
The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast! · April 6, 2022

It's not just the bad guy being sexist, it's about the framing and depiction of women in the movie. It's the storytelling and directorial intent that has deep creases of misogyny running through it.

T
The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast! · April 6, 2022

I have a movie recommendation for you wonderful people: Killer Elite from 2011. It's fun, it has Clive Owen and THE STATHAM and Bob DeNiro even shows up for a few scenes. It's also the only time I've ever heard Dominic Purcell sound like he's from Merseyside rather than doing a generic American accent.

T
The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast! · April 6, 2022

I saw this movie in the theater and enjoyed it at the time but I never saw it again and most of my memories of it have been lost. I definitely forgot how deeply this movie hates women, it has a really 90's poser indie movie attitude to it. I will say this is one of two movies that I know of where the hero shoots people during sex, the other being the amazing Nicolas Cage vehicle Drive Angry which is much more memorable.

Cumming is gay, we know that, but more important, I think, is the equivalent inverse; Shooting mean, tough men is the offset to the gayness you naturally build up caring about people, including yourself. Satisfaction is allowed, but only completely internalised and invisible, *never* attachment or ,god forbid, ambivalent feeling and openness.

Interestingly, at the time of the director's ama there was a mid budget action film that came out. John Wick had a budget of about $20 million according to IMDb.

Oh, and can I recommend Sneakers? There's Sidney Poitier for Abby (amazing actor, of course), Dan Akroyd doing conspiracy theories for Alice (resident conspiracist), and Robert Redford for Devon (because Robert Redford is sexy as hell)
