You know our rules. It's the second movie in a series or nothin, Babey! And to this end we watched the incredible 'Spy Kids 2; The Island of Lost Dreams' with our dear friend Tom Walker. Ok so I was relistening to this episode and then my friend blindsided me with a fact I had never noticed: the Toa Mata are used as background decorations a couple times in the movie, which I somehow failed to notice as a kid despite rewatching this movie and being insanely Bionicle pilled.
The Spy Kids franchise was my introduction to Danny Trejo, so despite the fact he has something like 700 credits, in my mind he's always Uncle Machete.
this episode won trivia for me and my partner last night — the final question was abt who created king of the hill and i knew it was mike judge bc y’all mention it!! could not possibly have pulled it out otherwise, so thank you for helping us get free drinks
Escape from LA has the exact same McGuffin !! In the hands of the president's daughter !!
These 4 freaking out over the thumb thumbs is incredible
Sadly, the Dinkster Daily youtube channel stopped posting earlier this year after exactly 3,000 Dinks
Holy shit Tom Walker from Tom Walker GTA 4
Memory unlocked: took a child to see “Real Steel” (2011 movie). Said child declared happily that it was “the best movie since SpyKids 2.” I had no idea what that meant. I still don’t.
The spy kids episodes are my facial electrolysis appointment playlist. Bout an episode a go, light surreal bullshit to escape to while I'm stoned af getting face tased.
ive been dinkpilled
the way u describe the cgi and overall look of the film is i think why the way its aged is charming to me in a way most cgi movies from that time arent, theres just something about it. its not just nostalgia either, i feel this way about sharkboy and lavagirl which I never saw as a kid.
Having just rewatched this, I checked DinksterDaily and was saddened to hear that his 3000th video will be his last, on May 17th, announced on his Feb 29th 2024 upload. One guy living the dream, but knowing when it's time to move on.
Coming back to this 2 and a half years later to say I object to Tom's Pokémon analogy - the actual designs of the Pokémon is the only thing that's consistently gotten better as the games have gone on.
The fact that the Spy Kids series canonically shares a universe with the Machete films (Danny Trejo is playing the same character in both???) makes me believe there must be a Higher Power
Im so upset yall didn't drop the "camel poop" line. I randomly say it in her cadence when I've been put out.
Gary may be a Draco Malfoy character, but Gerti looks like someone stuck ponytails on Tom Felton. It is honestly uncanny.
The Dinkster Daily stream is goddamn performance art
i do not know if this has been said in a comment and i am far too lazy to check but on bill paxton's wikipedia page there is an image of him as a child in the crowd at THE FUCKING JFK ASSASSINATION AND IM NOT EVEN KIDDING
WHAT THE FUCK THEY ACTUALLY RANG THE KID DINKSTER ON HIM
I mean, if KJB are impressed by Pres. Shooter McGavin, the President in Game Over will break their brains.
I love listening to this purely because I am someone who adored and rewatched all three movies many times as a child and them not having any idea what is going on
If there's one thing funnier than 'Did somebody ring the Dinkster?', its Alice saying deadly serious in reaction to something in the film 'Someone rang the *f u c k i n g* Dinkster'
So apparently Juni Cortez is married to Megan trainor??
Yeah if you look up a picture of them together one of the top results is him carrying an enormous bag of sex toys with her.
DID SOMEBODY RING THE DINKISTER
God I haven't seen these since I was...10? 11? Also yes please roast the 3rd one it is uniquely bad in funny and interesting ways. Suggestion for future episode: The Beatles HELP! I suspect that C will be at minimum 6 for that one.
Really want to have the SCUM scientific method applied to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
I listened to this while driving to work and wound up laughing so hard that I choked and then spat up a mouthful of tea. Almost crashed my car and took 2 hours at work to fully dry. 10/10, fucking excellent
Also, if you ever offered merch that was a single page of a KJB transcript as an illuminated manuscript I would pay an unreasonable amount of money for it. Just saying.
It sounds like this is the inverse of Cars 2; utter absurdity, but fun instead of brain-melting. E: NVM, sounds like the Dinkster did melt your brain.
ASKAB
Tom is a delight on any podcast he graces y'all always have good guests. My good pal made all of us watch the first spy kids while over for the holidays in 2019, what a way to bring in 2020, explains a lot, and I genuinely enjoyed watching it. Sounds like this one was pretty decent and funny to hear the things brought back from the first that you lot had zero context for, loved how much tom loved the thumbs honestly
Who loves the moon? I know who: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I9MZNEXrElw
I vaguely remember years ago reading somewhere that the casting of these movies was sort of a passion thing, like all these actors just really wanted to do a ridiculous, fun kids' movie.
Tom was great!
Oh no! I just realized they won't get to see the Queen being saved in The Naked Gun 😭
I tell you I watched the first one a LOT and I especially loved Uncle Machete... it wasn't until MUCH later when I learned about the Machete movies lmao.
everyone on the pod ignored it but i would like to acknowledge Abi's "avuncular" pun. i appreciated it
Looked up daily dinkster and holy shit: https://smplive.fandom.com/wiki/Dinkster_Daily
I constantly think about the fact that the spy kids are canonically the niece and nephew of Machete from the Machete franchise and he is a major character in the first movie. The spy kids movies also apparently canonically take place in the same universe as a bunch of Tarentino movies if you dig deep enough which is very fun.
The thumb creatures are legit called Thumb-Thumbs, and it’s never explained in any of the movies whether they’re supposed to be robots or just some weird ass genetic mutants that Floop built, but to this day they are absolutely terrifying to me
Just realised that both of the films are built upon an evil antagonist doing horrific genetic experiments, not sure what this says about the time
Bringing back weird childhood memories. Including "The Tuxedo", the absurdly horny Jackie Chan Bondalike movie. I hope it's on your bonus episode schedule.
I had completely blocked out watching Spy Kids as a child, getting to the Thumb Creatures and just noping out of the movie completely. I cannot stress enough how the first movie is like a normal kids movie for the first half hour and then they get transported to an acid trip hellscape that terrified the crap out of me. Thanks for reminding me of the nightmares! 😂
I only ever saw the first one as a kid, it does not feel any less like a fever dream than this one honestly.
I was going to apply for grad school, but what could I ever discover that can compare to the dink? What could I create that could match what the dink hath wrought? What, in our hubris, has Man dinked?!
did somebody ring the binkster(tom walker)
I remember seeing this one at least a few times as a kid. Actually, I think I saw 1, 2 and 3 2 times each at like daycare or school.
Great choice by our classically educated and erudite trio to bring on a guest who is smart in... other ways! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ29r405Obc
(he's so smart)
Like I love this and the first movie so much and I am trying to be mature enough to handle 3 British people dunk on my childhood, it’s very hard
