The forces of time march ever onward, resolute in their forward motion, but there are always those that would seek to go back as a way to relive things once more or as a way to right a great wrong should they have come across it. It is those that are most interested in turning back the wheels of time that seek powerful rifts in the continuum of things. Once found, the type of magics that may be harnessed from them are immeasurable. It seems that one such rift resides in this watch. Just how much would you pay to undo one mistake?

High level consumables are a really interesting place to explore because the idea behind them is that you can really crank up the power so long as you only do it that once. At least that’s the concept I go with whenever I’m writing something like this. It’s fascinating to me what “forbidden” depth of power you can dive into when you know you’re only going to get the one chance to use it over the course of a campaign and that’s what I wanted to explore with this item.
It was a very unique occurrence when writing this that I realized the 5E and PF2E versions of it could almost be written in exactly the same way, just altering some of the death conditions to provide the proper context within each of the systems. I say that’s rare because 5E and PF2E are so different in how they actually play out at the table and how the math all works, but something triggering on death and resetting a whole area, well there’s not many rules for that.
It was in that lack of rules that I actually saw an opportunity to make something that was extremely powerful, but definitely just a single use item for a campaign defining moment. You might go back and experience all of your mistakes knowing not to redo them again, or will you be doomed to not learn and repeat them. It’s a fascinating way to make something powerful even if it only happens one time.
