Stargazer

Greetings adventurers!

Do you ever just laze about outside after the sun has gone down and stare up at the stars above? It’s one of my favorite activities whenever I have the time to do so, which is admittedly getting less and less frequent as I get older. I hope one day to retire and spend more time gazing at the heavens above and unlocking their meaning if one exists. Regardless, this eye patch may just be what you need if you’re as interested in the skies above as I am. Go ahead, give it a try on and gaze upon the majesty of worlds above.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, Foundry VTT modules, a filterable catalogue of all of our items, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

One of the more constant things I’ve spoken about is the challenge of designing lower level magic items in that you are either having to add mechanics that don’t already exist or trying to modify mechanics that are very simple already. There’s this idea that you can’t give too much power at lower levels nor can you negate the usual challenges that come with them. I do agree with that. I think you have to be very careful with how much power you give lower level characters in combat, which is why I like to design lower level items to modify the other pillars of exploration or discovery.

In the 5E version of this item, I really wanted to give a constant benefit. The idea of magic items in 5E is that they usually have something that will always benefit you plus something that is more chance based. If it’s all chance based, then it has a number of features that allow you to have more chances at doing something cool. This is why I added in the general sense of knowing direction with the definite sense of being able to find it once per day. I’m not always keen leaving things up to GMs in item design, but sometimes it’s necessary for lower levels like in this case.

For the PF2E item, this is a more definite thing. I knew I wanted to give this the basic components of a compass in that you can find direction rather easily, but also gave it something a bit more. That’s why I wanted to give it the projection ability and specifically call out cases where you might be underground or unable to see the night sky. I’m less concerned about leaving DCs and so on up to GMs in PF2E as there’s more guidance on setting DCs of checks. There this functions as a better compass with an extra little cinematic ability to project the night sky.

It’s been a blast writing this item this week and we’ve got everything lined up for the next month as well. Next week we’ll be celebrating pride month with an item themed around it. Then we’ll move on to our last item and one more thing for the month that has a bent towards the astral as well. Stay tuned for those!
