Inferno Arrow

Greetings adventurers!

It seems since the moment magic was thrust upon this plain, people began trying to use it to cultivate light and fire. Conjuring flame is one of the very first things new magic practitioners learn and the control of the flame is something the seek to perfect. What is it that draws us so much to fire? Is it the primal instinct to conflate its warmth with safety of a campsite or is the mystery of its nature so integral that our desire to control it overrides the safety instinct to stay away? There’s something truly fascinating about that line of thought, but anyways yes this will burn people quite well!

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, Foundry VTT modules, a filterable catalogue of all of our items, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

There are times when I recognize that we’ve created a lot of really cool items and ideas with complex mechanics and really interesting interactions. Then there are times where I just really want to kick it back to basics and make something that just gets the job done in a basic way in combat. I love creating all of the very unique pieces we have, but sometimes you just want to make something that will kick some butt in a fight and this arrow was right up that alley.

The idea of persistent fire damage is something that I think should have been core to 5E, but it hasn’t really been properly introduced. The way I set this up meant that basically that damage could keep ticking for good and it could really cause some long term chaos if it was not seen to. I had considered making both versions of this a consumable, but it just didn’t fit as much with 5E hero fantasy and really felt bad to just lose the arrow forever, thus my move to give it a recharge.

The PF2E version was very straightforward combat power. Consumable arrows and bolts are quite common in PF2E whereas non-consumable versions aren’t so present. I didn’t want to step out of the lines of power that are already drawn in the system, so instead I decided to completely revamp how this item works to give it possible conditional power on top of its obviously present damage. Giving it something extra for those flaming rune users just felt like a fun little addon that made it a bit more powerful.

As I said, sometimes it’s nice to just get back to building basic combat power and seeing what you can do in that world. I’m never going to stop loving creating more complex items, but not everything can be so complicated. Sometimes you just have the idea for something that makes things say ouch and you gotta run with it!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
