Gelatinous Gavel

Greetings adventurers!

Oozes just freak me out. There’s something I don’t trust about things without a head to speak of, though I understand their purpose in cleaning up spaces long since forgotten. I have to say there’s little that I find to be redeeming about them. They are unthinking, oddly moving, dangerous blobs with seemingly no thought other than pursuing its next meal and that will always make me question it. Granted I’m also sometimes only in search of my next meal. Alright maybe they’re not so different from us in some ways, but I will say this hammer that I happened to find in a long forgotten place does seem to have made some use for the oozes themselves.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, Foundry VTT modules, a filterable catalogue of all of our items, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

If that strikes your fancy, consider becoming a Patron

Design notes from Matthew:

There’s a trend in a lot of magic item design to take pieces from already included monsters and try to remix them into an item and while I don’t think it can work for every creature, there’s a few that actually do make some sense to me. You have to show a lot of care in giving players something that is normally balanced for the monster side of things as those mechanics can be inherently different from what should ever be in a player’s hands, this time though I thought I had a good way to make it work.

I had an idea of a gelatinous sword sitting around for a while, but the moment I suggested it to Fernando, he pointed out that a hammer was probably going to make a lot more sense just from a thematic perspective with the ooze acting like the head of the hammer. I couldn’t really argue with that logic, so I didn’t. That’s one of the really great things about the mutual respect that Fernando and I have for one another in recognizing good ideas when they come.

As for the actual mechanics of it, these were really straightforward. I knew I wanted to give it some acid damage as is thematically appropriate, then pair that with a grabbing mechanic that would deal damage over time. Really all I had to figure out was if I wanted it to be limited activation or not, but I decided the more fun way to make it was just crit activation. Sometimes it’s best to just keep it simple like that.

We’re into May now and this is our first item of the month. I’m looking forward to taking some vacation time towards the end of the month for myself, but worry not! That won’t affect your releases as we’ll still be putting things out in our regular content cycle.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
