Dead Manual

Greetings adventurers!

I’ve spoken to all manner of scholars, but one of the more interesting persons I’ve had the time to chat with is someone who studied the various iterations of the undead. It’s a rare field that most don’t want to get into. Understandable considering the risk that comes with finding subjects to study. That said, they had told me that to truly understand the undead, you had to get up close and personal. I asked how they had managed. There was some mention of cages, silver, and all manner of other unpleasantries. I suggested simply summoning realistic illusions… I worry I might have caused an existential crisis.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

I had this idea earlier in the year, but wanted to save it specifically for spooky month since it seemed so fitting for that kind of theming. I find that specific knowledge can often be a really useful offering for people depending on the setting and in an undead heavy setting, this could certainly be one of the more useful items in your entire inventory. Fernando also was able to take the idea of a reasonably basic book and turn it into something that was still visually striking, which is crazy to me.

In the 5E version, there are certainly spells that let you summon illusions and so on, but none of them really got close to anything that I wanted to use. Especially none of them that exist in the CC license. When that’s the case, it always means that I end up writing more of a spell than a magic item. I highly recommend that folks look more at how spells are written because when you’re putting together a magic item, half of the time you’re actually more or less writing a spell.

On the PF2E version, there was already something that got fairly close to what I wanted in the spell catalogue, so I decided to go with that but with a few tweaks. Something that’s important to remember is that when items are casting magic instead of the player, you need to specify all of the stats that would normally be imparted by the player. This is something I see a lot of folks forget about when producing content for PF2E.

Can you believe that after this we still have 2 spooky weeks coming your way? I’m actually ecstatic that we got a 5 release week October this year. They don’t always fall that way, so it’s exciting to get to produce even more off beat items for your games. I hope you’ve enjoyed these so far!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.

Though that's a question, does the book eventually replenish pages, or does that slowly consume the book until it's gone?

I intended for them to be replenished at the end of your daily preparations. This being a relatively low power item, it would feel a little bad if pages ran out over time. I can probably do a reexport to clarify in the coming days. Appreciate the question as it always helps me to see things I might have missed! - Matthew
