Ichabod's Frock

Greetings adventurers!

I had heard many tales of supernatural beings in the forests outside of town. Spooks and spectres, undead of all types, things to make you blood chill in the middle of the night. Few of them impacted me as much as a child as when I read about the headless riders of the river wood. Something about the imagery of a jack-o’-lantern headed being riding a blackened horse, chasing down those who were brave enough to enter their wood, it chilled me to my core. That said, I’ve often heard that fear can be a driver of creativity, so I put that to work.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

I’m so excited to put this one together for you all as I love the stories of Sleepy Hollow and the lore that has come out of them over the years. I was so excited for spooky season this year, that I had a great brainstorming session to write out all of the item and creature ideas for the month. This was among my favorites that I was able to put together. I’m hoping you all find it fun as well. I can see where it won’t fit in every game, but there’s certainly some campaigns that would welcome it.

For the 5E version, I needed to find some way to limit the frightened condition as it is a bit more powerful in 5E. Most of my writing in this version centered around getting the timing of the frightened condition to be meaningful without letting it take over any particular encounter. I think the best way to do that is by giving creatures the chance to save over and over again. This makes it a lot easier for the enemies to get out of a condition, but still gives variable lengths of effect for the player.

For the PF2E version, I needed to find the right balance of frightened, but it was actually a lot easier due to it being a scaling condition that ticks down regardless, every round. I felt a lot better about letting it scale a little harder, but I still wanted to be cognizant that you can use it several times a day. The other difficulty was picking the right damage type here for the flaming pumpkin toss. Considering this frock would be kind of a tool of the undead, I felt that negative would be the best path. Sometimes the damage is more about flavor than anything else.

It’s my pleasure to keep making spooky things for this most haunted time of year. We haven’t done a spooky month every year, but it just felt right bringing it back again for this year as we both love halloween so much. Anyways, we’ll be back next week with a handbook to guide you through the afterlife’s challenges.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
