Time for another big update
Hey dudes (and dudettes)!
I've been busy on several fronts lately, but I believe it was worth it because I have very good news for you.
The fixes you were waiting for, since both https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert/ and https://store.steampowered.com/app/2677660/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Great_Circle/ were no longer working in VR due to the recent official patches, are ready and included in the latest R.E.A.L. releases. The free version, supporting INDY and lots of other games, can always be downloaded at the end of this post. The "VR friend" version, which supports all the games of the public version plus the ones which are currently in Early Access, including CD, is attached here.
The full list of all supported games is always in the pinned post, which is also the recommended starting point for people who are new to the Patreon.
But as I was saying, I have also been working on something else, not just the fixes.
The first new thing you will find is what Brandon calls a "major improvement" to DL(S)SS. At the moment it is available only for CD, but if the results look as good to you as they seemed to be in our internal testing, in time I will port it to other games in our collection. Anyway, CD is probably the title that needed it most, since the crazy amount of detail in the foliage combined with a less-than-perfect DLSS implementation by the developers make for a lot of shimmering and artifacts, especially when the upscaling factor is high. By the way, those problems are present in the base game and many people who play it flat have complained about them, but of course in VR they tend to be even more visible because VR magnifies both details and imperfections.
Brandon is very sensitive (more than me) to image quality issues, and he says that with this release of R.E.A.L., using DL(S)SS in the game is now a much better option over FSR, which was my previous recommendation for people who couldn't afford to select the DLAA preset. So I have high hopes :-) Please let us know about your own results!
This new release also fixes a bug I had in my game startup code for quite a while, which would make some titles launch at a resolution different from the one you had chosen during your previous session. Now all games should correctly remember the last resolution you set with the slider, and they should be able to restore it automatically for you at the beginning of the next gaming session.
And finally, there are big improvements to the FOV management offered by the R.E.A.L. framework. The FOV-related controls have been reorganized and moved to their own section, which makes them easier to find and navigate, and offers a cleaner way of either remembering them across gaming sessions or restoring them to default values when needed.
But most importantly, the FOV restriction sliders are now available and supported also for OpenXR, which makes them usable with a much broader selection of VR headsets rather than just with Meta devices. SteamVR is not yet supported because it doesn't offer a programmatic way to access its own internal FOV restriction controls, although you can do that manually from your SteamVR settings (we will try to come up with a guide about that, maybe even make a video tutorial).
And last but not least, the FOV restriction controls (horizontal and vertical) can now be linked together in such a way as to automatically select the optimal FOV aspect ratio for the resolution that you are currently using in game. This gives you the best possible match between the headset form factor and the image size that the GPU has to render, which can result in rather dramatic performance improvements because the GPU no longer has to waste any power drawing useless pixels that will never be sent to the VR headset. The same optimization was already available before this release, but it needed some tedious manual intervention: basically you had to inspect the log in order to find out the ideal aspect ratio, then change the game resolution and/or the headset FOV parameters until you achieved the best compromise. Now you can have R.E.A.L. perform the same calculations automatically just by ticking a checkbox []-D
Tomorrow I will start looking at 007 First Light to see if it's possible to make it playable in VR; I'll let you know what I find. But for the moment, I hope you will enjoy this new release!!

VR needs all the help it can get. I wish i could support you more but for now im just not cancelling my monthly :)
Does this mod still support Cyber Punk? I remeber the huff puff for a while back and was wondering if I could play the game again in VR… the real way to play it?
I am 33 hours in already now and absolutely loving crimson desert. Another update will hold off as saw its broken the mod. Such a fantastic experience in VR.
Anyone know what this error means? I can't launch CD 21:05:11:746 [MAIN ] | ERROR | Failed to apply CDGameState patch. 21:05:11:808 [MAIN ] | ERROR | Only 5 of 6 RVR patches applied successfully.
Thanks. looks like it just updated and broke....... again :(
must say its shimmering free now. playing with realvr and vrto3d mod. thanks. beautiful work!!!
Hey Luke, might it be possible to add 16:9 support to Elden Ring?
Crimson Desert is GOD TIER AMAZING! *Please Luke you have done all the "Souls" games except for : "Sekiro" and "Armored Core 6" (both FromSoftware games), can we get support for those please?
I know this is a niche problem but I still can't make RealVR works with an ASI loader
What are you trying to use?
I don't know if this has been mentioned before but in CD, when I horse taming there are two separate images in left and right so I can only see if I close one eye. By the way, CD looks fantastic in the dream air.
It hasn't, I'll check it out :) Sure, rub it in why don't ya?
Fatekeeper just released on Steam early access. This looks like it would be an incredible VR title
Works with UEVR, why would he spend time on it? It looks like it is only a few hours of gameplay too. I don't think adding an EA game right now would be a good idea either, CD is pretty much an EA game essentially. So, he is already going to have extra work keeping up with that 😁
CD finally clicked for me, but the shimmering effect is crazy, apparently their "denoiser" isnt up to standard. Only fix I see is to enable RT, but that tanks my 4090 fps. Hope they fix it soon or that we at least get a mod for it. I also noticed that indoors sometimes I get a crazy oversaturation effect, it is not REALVR either, it is a game issue. I think it also happens with RT on, though to a lesser extent. If you guys learn of any fixes please share it asap
Yeah, Luke could only do so much to fix DLSS without them fixing their implementation on their end. DLSS should have the least amount of shimmering at this point though. RT will only tank fps if you are using Max lighting, but unfortunately Max lighting also helps quite a bit with shimmering.
Is there any way to get this working or something like it? Open xr toolkit 3d boost? https://youtu.be/Y6oHpf-Y2Ds?si=VrvVEFMjGM-UG8Nx
OpenXR Toolkit isn't compatible. What does it do exactly?
Hey guys, anyone else have this issue with Crimson Desert getting locked to 60fps? It'll go above 60fps in the menu(s) that aren't rendered, like the main menu before you go to graphics where R.E.A.L. renders the menu onto its overlay, but everywhere else for me it's just 60fps and nothing I've tried so far fixes it. Separate issue, but also everything relatively close to me, like grass near the camera, or items when you examine them, have a sort of double image. 5090/9850x3d
If you mean there is a shimmering around objects, that is just a thing in this game for now. Use DLSS which is less offensive, Luke did some extra work on it for this game. They still need to fix their DLSS implementation though. 60fps: Sounds like you are using 1/3 rendering mode, which interpolates 2 extra fames for added smoothness but caps at 2x/3 your refresh rate. So 90hz would be 60fps but should feel like 180fps in motion. Just switch rendering modes. 1/2 will cap at 90 and interpolate 1 extra frame for 180fps smoothness. Legacy is just regular AER with no interpolation, which will cap at your headset refresh.
Hey Brandon, in previous CD post, you mentioned and linked a mod that enhances visuals. Unfortunately the link is dead. Do you remember which mod it was? And are there any other mods you'd recommend for CD?
I corrected the link there. It had some weird little line at the end of the first link I pasted. Here it is again though. It is the only one that is continually worked on that we are able to use. https://www.nexusmods.com/crimsondesert/mods/651
DLSS still looks horrible in my headset, I guess I will wait for the devs fix...
Should look better though, especially if you are using Max lighting and RT on. Should be way more stable. Depends on lighting conditions too though, especially if you are not using those settings.
Anyone know how i can get R.E.A.L VR FOR red dead redemption 2 first time on this site
You will need to check YouTube for somewhat recent videos on how to get it working. They often contain the downgraded game files you will need etc. You can't play the current version of the game in VR. We don't support it at all here after the DMCA. People still play it with the downgraded files though.
Hi, I recently started playing Crimson Desert and noticed that when I enable Oculus ASW on the new R.E.A.LVR framework, it no longer works (same issue happened with Death Stranding 2). I have to switch from Oculus/Meta to OpenXR to make it work, but then the image quality isn’t as good as with Oculus/Meta. I checked my old frameworks that worked perfectly with Days Gone and Kingdom Come 2, where ASW was running fine. I realized that on the new frameworks that Luke Ross has started, ASW doesn’t work anymore. Can this be fixed? Or will Luke Ross add support for it in the next update? Because ASW really helps a lot — it lets you play with high graphics in mono mode and actually enjoy the experience
ASW is not recommended at all. Are you using Legacy rendering mode? You will probably get the best results with ASW if using Legacy rendering. If you are using 1/3 or 1/2, don't expect it to work even remotely well. Those modes are already adding interpolated frames, so adding ASW on top makes no sense and will only cause major issues. Have you tried 72hz using 1/2? That should be a lot better than using ASW.
Hoping that the mention of looking into 007 first light eventuates into something.... I don't see any mention of it other than one sentence in this post above so don't have high hopes it's a realistic expectation.
Have to wait and see, it would be a brand-new engine that Luke has never worked with. Looks like it will be a blast if he is able to get it done :)
I never thought of reducing my FOV in SteamVR, noice.
How does CD look with the new improved DL(S)SS ?
Much improved :) They still need to work on their implementation, so it still has room for improvement.
Does anyone know if It is possible to add a addon to the mod overlay? I'm trying to use a addon for reshade to turn the wind down. I can get it to work when using the latest version of reshade but it will not show up in Luke's overlay.
REAL is built off of a much older Reshade version. Luke would have to rebuild with the latest version for Addon support and that isn't likely to happen any time soon if at all. It would be a lot of work.
double vision both view is flat. one bigger than the other overlapping.
where's the new mod for The great circle? The other files certainly doesn't work.
Indy should be fixed in both the free/public version and the early access version. Either one should work. Also, it is not a mod 😉
In Crimson Dessert, there is vertical black line on characters back/shield with anything other than DLAA. Any fix?
I can't say I have experienced that issue. There are shadow issues with NPC's but they are there even with DLAA. Max lighting and RT with DLSS upscaling is a pretty good settling point if you can run it. DLAA is really expensive as are all the best options for visual quality in this game :) You can try this graphics mod, it is the only one that we can use that offers any real possible benefit, he works on it and updates it pretty frequently. It is designed to look best using Ray Reconstruction and max settings, but it can still have some benefits outside of that. https://www.nexusmods.com/crimsondesert/mods/651| You could also try clearing out your Nvidia shader cache, that can help with issues in this game sometimes. This game still has visual artifacts and problems though, even flat.
Guys, just want to confirm that it's safe to update CD to 1.09. I tested it and it doesn't seem to have broken anything :-)
All good here :)
For those that are having trouble with CD (or nay game) getting updated and breaking REALVR, just keep steam offline and set the update property (global or per game) to update when/after launch. That should help you keeping you modded games intact. If you have the memory space, you can also back up the entire game folder before deciding to update and see if it breaks your mods. If it does, the restore the backup and launch normally. Hope this helps!
CD is still working after the update :)
Do we know if the new 1.09 patch breaks VR yet? Ive got steam sitting in offline mode and I'm not game to turn it back on.
Just tried it briefly and it still seemed to work fine.
CD must have updated in between latest vr early access geez
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3321460/view/672870313012232792?l=english Ah man again. This could be problematic Devs are blasting updates. Its good but also bad for luke
spew CD wont open for me. have latest patch and latest early access real vr. get infinate black loading screen
Double check Frame Gen. That has been the number one cause for this issue. Rename dxgi.dll to dxgi_.dll and turn FG off if it is on. Then rename back to dxgi.dll so REAL will inject again.
Hey y’all, I had Indy running before, albeit a little rough, but still very fun. Now I’m not able to get it to launch without crashing, despite having a 4080 and everything set to low and config optimization. Want to finish this story so badly. Thanks for any help.
When did you have it running? Just before the recent update? You may need to enable Steam Input if you haven't. If that isn't the issue, maybe try disabling REAL by renaming RealRepo folder to RealRepo_ so it doesn't inject and double check the game settings. Like making sure Frame Gen isn't on.
Hey reporting back after trying the CD update. Brandon was right, these are excellent improvements! Made me actually want to play for a while. Now I only have to figure out how to turn off SSO to get rid of that flickering shade.
I tried yeah, not much difference. Did that work for you?
I'm trying to get Crimson Desert to run for the first time (played it flat for a couple of hours, then extracted the latest-at-the-time R.E.A.L. and ran RealConfig, but starting the game was just no beans. I saw this updated post today and extracted the new version, now I get a different failure - actual black screen and a close the program or wait dialog, but no indication it's getting to the point of trying to launch something in VR. I'm sorry if this is well trodden territory, but honestly I'm struggling really hard with how to effectively use Patreon. When I made a post a week or two ago, I literally couldn't even figure out how to view the response that Brandon gave me. Heck, I've spent like 10 minutes trying to figure out how to get the darned "start here" material that I know I've seen before and I'm just throwing my hands up. So anyway, sorry if this is already answered elsewhere, but could use some help with troubleshooting steps for CD just not booting.
Number one reason people have had this issue is because they have frame gen on 😉 If you need to disable REAL to check, just rename dxgi.dll to dxgi_.dll so it doesn't inject.
Luke, I’ve been a subscriber for a long time. Please, please consider making a VR mod for Forza Horizon 6 when it comes out. I would absolutely love to experience that game in VR. Your mods have given me some of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I know it must be a lot of work, but I really hope you’ll think about it. Thank you always for your amazing work.
No can do, the anti cheat tech doesn't allow it. The game will just crash itself.
Any chance you could revisit DFR in REAL mod? I know it was tested a while ago with mediocre results, but with high resolution headsets becoming more prevalent, the gains should be a significant boost for more people. Even just the basic DX11 DFR implementation gets my Crystal Super UW to native resolution at 72 fps in a handful of games or makes DLAA possible.
The new FOV limit sliders are kind of like DFR but instead of low-quality image on the outside, you get no image. You would think that would be even more of a performance savings in the end.... right? Of course, it is more noticeable but honestly going down to .900 or .850 becomes mostly unnoticeable for me after a while. Kind of like when you are watching a movie with letterboxing, after a while you sort of forget about it. Up to an extent. Probably depends on playstyle too. I use the thumb sticks to move the camera a lot, so I don't move my head very far left and right the majority of the time.
Crimson desert is so slow in VR. When I move my head left and right, I see the edges or black areas. Is there a practical way to speed up the frame rate without sacrificing quality? I have a 4090 (16 GB) with an I9. Wasnt expecting this performance issue. Im on 2032x2032 with max graphical settings.
Max lighting with RT is pretty heavy in this game. Are you using any upscaling? What rendering mode are you using? Unless you are using the restrict FOV sliders somewhat heavily, 2032 is quite low resolution. Max settings are not worth 2032x2032 at 100% FOV at all.
Thanks for the update. I have Crimson Desert looking brilliant now. The new implementation of DLSS(S) does kill a lot of the shimmering I was experiencing. Running RT and Ray reconstruction with a slightly reduced fov and mostly ULTRA settings. Some of the landscapes look absolutely phenomenal. 100+ VR hours in this game and it's been a real gem.
Good to hear! Hopefully they will fix/improve their DLSS implementation, and it will be even better 😁
I cant seem to be able to mess with FOV in r.e.a.l only let's me tick HFOV the other is greyed out as are the sliders. I only had a bit of time today though. Just enough to update game and check. Is this linked to pimax? I have meta xr active . Appreciate any help on this please
I haven't checked for Pimax. I'll try to do that this evening.
I see a REAL update, the day immediately gets brighter. Getting what I vot ... er, paid for! Thanks for considering the new 007 game, played a bit and it was a lot a fun. Very cool Uncharted/Hitman vibes.
Thank you for the fixes. Now I can be Indiana Jones once again!
I will try to hold and a wait playing First Light, until the VR mod eventually arrives, like I did with Last of Us. Totally worth it, playing first time in VR.
Hi, I’m experiencing the same issue I had when I tried using the rollback version (Crimson Desert) When I launch the game, after the initial prompt I get a black screen with the mouse cursor visible, showing the blue spinning loading icon, and it stays stuck there indefinitely. I’ve already tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling everything, but as soon as I install RealVR, the game no longer starts. Could you please help me troubleshoot this? Best regards, Cyril
What headset and how is it connected if not DisplayPort? What platform, Steam? Did you double check the game settings to make sure they are correct? Is there a bar at the bottom that is loading shaders? How are you launching the game?
A new expansion DLC for Witcher 3 has just been announced by CDPR.
given the unfortunate recent events, that is not likely to happen.
Witcher 3 is asking for VR treatment in 2027 ... I wonder that CDPR thinks about the new R.E.A.L. strategy ...
Honestly, I think that ship has sailed at this point. Perhaps they will do a location based experience though 😉
Wow, the new updates sound really awesome, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that 007 First Light works out. I’m already super hyped for the game. And thanks for all your other mods too, they’re absolutely incredible and have already given me so many hours of fun <3
Thanks Luke.....I'm trying to get everything working again because Steam doesn't like my new 5080 very much! And then I'll be able to marvel even more with C.D....I'm at 39.7 hours and I'm still at level 0!!!!!! :) :)
Wow, great changes, thank you Luke! And an unexpected dream/wish that might come true, about your 007 First Light explorations, I cannot even imagine how awesome a blend of Hitman, Uncharted and Watch Dogs would be to play in 3D! Good luck with it, for all of us, baby!!!
I really appreciate Crimson Desert update. I am only 6 hours in (on rolled back old version) this is such a massive beautiful world to be inside of. I am super excited to try fov on pimax its a great way to squeeze extra performance. I going to update it it and use the updated first person mod too. Would love to see you borrow the first person xml to add native first person option to your mod. And add even higher resolution options This has got me motivated to play again and enjoy all the crispy visuals. Thank you very much I am so grateful to see this update gents.
Let us know if you see any improvement with DLSS between the rolled back version and the new one :)
I think Star Wars Outlaws VR is broken also 007 First Light would be awesome in VR
Thanks, I'll install it and check it out.
Very much appreciated update. I had indy working on a previous version but my latest saves were not compatible, I can now dive back in on my 100% completion run. 007 game would be amazing so fingers crossed, I find it almost impossible now to play flat screen games however good they are. Keep up the fantastic work. Many thanks.
Thanks for the hard work Luke! And...007 First Light would be awesome!!!
007 would be pretty nice, yet I'm starving for Forza Horizon 6. I just can't play car games without VR anymore. ^^°
totally second this! hoping Luke will try to work his magic on this!
Well, if 007 doesn't work, there's always Forza Horizon 6! :-D
I am desperately waiting for your solution on 007. I will refund the game if you can't get it to work
Thanks Luke! I am having issues getting to work though, It starts in 3d then jumps to a 2d screen. Anybody know what I am doing wrong?
Drop in the files from the latest release of REAL and run the config file. Should work. I'll download and try it just in case something is off with the release version.
Cool stuff, ty!
Are the FoV controls able to be applied without restarting VR now? It would be neat if so, as 3D needs the ability to modify the FoV dynamically
If you mean, does it need to reinitialize after setting them, it still does. Unless he changed things from when I tried it, even more :)
Ty Luke hoping you do that game . would be awesome 👍
Looks really good!
Is this for the 1.08.00 version of CD?
Yup :)
Super keen to try the new DLSS features. Thanks Luke!
Probably it's time to check how bad my machine is for CD. Thanks for giving me hope! And please add MGS 5 and the Yakuza series (Dragon Engine) to your list of potential candidates, they definitely need VR mods
PS. Holy shit that 007 teaser, I’ll have a heart attack if you make that work lmao 😅. I think I’ll have to travel back in time to pinch my younger self lmao, the idea of getting to be literally inside the world of James Bond is uniquely 🤯 given how much of an impression those movies left on me as a kid…
Ty for the extensive update - awesome work mate. Will have to wait a while to experience the DL(S)SS enhancements as I’m not really into CD, but that is not a complaint to be super clear haha. Awesome that peeps will get to try them out and provide feedback, I look fwd to the improvement when it makes its way to a game I play. The newly automated FOV stuff sounds super cool too. As always, great work mate 🙏
007 First Light = AWESOME !!! hope that works flawlessly
Yeah, the reviews seem pretty solid so far!
Me this morning: "I'm just not interested in 007....I dunno, it's just not for me, so I'll probably skip it" Me just now: "Well, if you're asking, I take all my drinks shaken....not stirred."
It looks like they did a really good job with it 😁
Can you also look into Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight?
Isn't performance for that game really bad? I'd rather he did some of the Arkham games instead if he has any Batman games on his radar.
Thanks as always Luke
If you find that CD looks much better with DLSS now, I'll take a little bit of that thanks 😋 Not much, like 10%-15%. I'll just take the S at the end.
