I've seen the most amazing desert in VR, and it was crimson in color...

Could I be any more obvious?

^_^

No, I don't think so.

(Jump past the following changelog to continue reading if it's the first time you're seeing this post.)

  • Update May 8: Release 2605.8.2_early_access of the R.E.A.L. VR framework improves support for CD considerably, to the point that it's almost starting to feel like a native VR game. See here for details!

  • Update May 4: Release 2605.4.2_early_access extends support for CD to version 1.05.01 (All Platforms Hotfix). There are also improvements to DS2OTB: see the game-specific post here.

  • Update April 24: Release 2604.24.2_early_access extends support for CD to version 1.04.01 (All Platforms Hotfix). I prevented the game from limiting the field of view to 100 degrees, which would make the world look warped on headsets with larger FOV. I also fixed a recent regression with my OpenXR code that completely messed up the stereo image for all games, and I restored the broken gaze-aiming in DS2OTB after yesterday's official update to PC Patch 1.5.

  • Update April 23: Haha, that was some spectacular bad timing. I released support for the game just a few hours before the developers dropped a huge patch. I had to come out of my cryo-sleep pod to fix everything that broke. Anyway, it's working again now: grab the updated early access version of R.E.A.L. from the usual location, and always remember to run RealConfig when you install my framework, even if it's just an update.

  • Extra: Release 2604.23.4_early_access also adds support for the Game Pass version of KCD2. RealConfig won't be able to set any options, because Microsoft hides the game configuration files too well, but I added a manual override where you will be notified of the failure and asked to set all the required options manually. The values you need to change are the usual suspects: window mode, vsync off, maximum frame limit, no motion blur, no near DOF, DLSS for upsampling. I also modified my code to account for the game executable being found in a different folder structure. Sorry guys, but this is really the last time I'm doing extra work to support multiple editions (like Steam+Game Pass+Epic Games Store+Ubisoft Connect+GOG+...) of the same game. There are just too many games in the list, and the compatibility matrix is becoming huge and distracting.

OMG, I've totally fallen for this game. I've never seen anything look so beautiful in VR, not even photogrammetry.

But as expected it's also dramatically punishing on the hardware. I need a 6090 Super, and I need it NOW. I just have to locate the barn where the DeLorean is hidden. But I digress.

The post for the game is here, and you can always find the link to the updated early access version of the R.E.A.L. VR framework here.

This title is so power-hungry that it actually prompted me to upgrade my software again, introducing two new sliders that will give you real-time fine control of the field of view: "Restrict horizontal FOV" and "Restrict vertical FOV".

I will write a post with full details on them one of these days, but basically what they do is, they expand on the capabilities offered by my previous "Optimize VFOV" and "Optimize HFOV" controls by allowing you to restrict your field of view in VR even more.

Why would you ever want to do that? Because games are getting more and more demanding, and they are beginning to rely very heavily on a technology (hardware-assisted frame generation) which is not accessible in VR. That means that no matter how powerful your GPU is, at some point you will hit the limit where it simply cannot draw any higher resolution while keeping up with the required frame rate. You have used and abused techniques like AER v2 to keep the headset fed with fewer and fewer fps, and you have squeezed as much fake detail as possible out of a rough image with DLSS and other forms of upsampling. Modern games perform such a staggering amount of graphic work on every pixel that your GPU is completely maxed out, and yet the image in your headset still looks grainy and blurry because the pixel density (PPD, or pixels per degree) is not high enough. Ah yes I almost forgot: as headsets get more and more awesome, their demands in terms of PPD are also getting progressively steeper.

So what is your last resort, aside from saving to buy a new graphics card? You need to save on the number of pixels that your card has to draw. Fewer pixels means higher frame rate. Or if you look at it from the other side: having the same amount of pixels, but concentrated in the central part of your FOV, gives you a higher pixel density without sacrificing either frame rate or quality.

It's a very similar idea to foveated rendering, which however requires deep support from the game engine to be really effective (retrofitting solutions usually have poor quality and can achieve <10% gains, which is why I never seriously considered them, at least in the context of 2D to 3D conversions).

For now the FOV restrictions are available only on Meta headsets like the Quest 3, and they have only been tested on Link/Air Link with the native Oculus runtime.

But speaking of awesome headsets, stay tuned, because I started working with Pimax again!!! They have been so kind as to provide me with a Dream Air, and I can say without doubts that from a hardware standpoint it's the best VR headset I've ever seen. Yes it's expensive in relative terms (probably because it's not subsidized with billions from Facebook, ahem) but at this point, what with the PC hardware prices skyrocketing and everything, it's becoming pretty clear that VR has turned into a rich-people hobby anyway.

Hopefully we'll be able to work out all the kinks in the software together; I really hope that will happen soon, because the magic of VR needs OLED screens. I really want to be able to say that there is one perfect solution where both the hardware and software run at their best, without compromises. I'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, since I believe in their efforts, I asked them for a referral link. It's my first time doing this :-) If you use this link, it should automatically add a $25 coupon code to your account.

ᯅ

I'm so tired after working on CD that I think I'll sleep for two weeks straight, but when I wake up I'll try my best to write up a review of what I find awesome, what I deem good, and what I believe calls for some improvement with the Dream Air. And of course I'll continue converting the other game-specific posts to the new format and making them current again with the latest information. And I will keep updating the framework and improving or fixing game support where needed.

YAWN. Just a little sleep now x_x

Thank you - impressive work, cant even imagine how difficult and tedious it must be. Guys... Is there a tutorial for pimax? - I was so hyped... but then reality hit - I´ve got no clue how all this VR works - Is there a tutorial for pimax? Should I start the game from Steam / SteamVR or Pimax games? OpenXR or SteamVR or Pimax open port? Turn on SBOYs driver? SO FAR: Started it via steamVR, Sboys running, at 2500x2500 but hit almost 32GB VRam limit on 5090 - turning was a laggy mess - otherwise 70-80FPS - Have the dream air. Thank you

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · August 20, 2026

If you have the SLAM or inside out tracking version of the Dream Air, then you will need to use Pimax EVO with Openport and Sboy's driver. If you have the lighthouse version, you shouldn't need EVO and Openport, though you can still just use EVO if you want probably. Since you are using Sboy's driver, which you should probably anyways, you will definitely need SteamVR running because it makes the headset into a SteamVR native headset, that is the point. Also make sure you have SteamVR set as your OpenXR runtime, that is important. When you open the REAL overlay, make sure it reports that you are using OpenXR runtime at the top of the main tab, if auto is not using OpenXR, select OpenXR from the dropdown there. If a game is not starting, it is possible that auto runtime is trying to use Oculus instead of OpenXR. You can go into the RealVR.ini file in the same game folder you put the REAL files in and under the [RVR] section change PreferredAPI2=0 to =2, which should be OpenXR. Or, you can just launch the game without your headset active and bring up the REAL overlay and change it to OpenXR in the dropdown. As far as turning being a laggy mess, what rendering mode are you using? In the main tab of the REAL overlay, look for the rendering mode dropdown. If you are using 1/3 or 1/2, they add in frame interpolation, so you will get artifacts when turning, especially using 1/3. Though 80-90fps seems too high if you are using 1/3. Using 1/2 at 90hz in CD is going to be a tough ask depending on game settings. 1/2 caps at your headset refresh rate, so 90hz would be 90fps but it interpolates 1 extra frame between to get you that 180fps VR target rate. That interpolation is not free of course and has a performance and latency penalty, so be aware of that. It also introduces some artifacts same as frame gen or any motion smoothing, but not bad at all when using 1/2. 1/3 interpolates 2 frames, so it lowers the fps requirement down to 60fps at 90hz, but you still end up with that 180fps feel, however the latency penalty is higher because of that and the artifacts get worse. The "higher quality AER" checkbox should be checked but it exists to make help with the artifacts a bit. You also need to hit the fps cap consistently for either of those modes to function correctly. So, if you are using 1/2 at 90hz, you really need a solid 90fps for it to work as intended. If you are using 1/3 at 90hz, you would need a constant 60fps for it to work as intended. Legacy is basic AER, so it would just cap at your headset refresh rate and alternate eyes. So 90fps using Legacy would be 45fps per eye which is far easier on performance and latency etc. Some people use Mono rendering mode, but that is just the view from one eye, so no Stereo3d. But it looks perfect and there are other depth cues the brain can pick up on, so it still works well for some people. As for hitting your VRAM limit, are you using max settings or do you have other software running in the background? Hopefully that info gives you enough to tinker and get things working better. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

The game crashes at startup, without the framework it works fine. What am I doing wrong

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · July 30, 2026

Number one cause for that is frame gen turned on. Make sure HDR and FG are off. If you need to stop REAL from injecting to turn it off, rename dxgi.dll to dxgi_.dll

Does anyone know if i can use this VR mod when launching through Definitive mod manager? i have tried but didnt work for me, be great if there is a work around or im doing something stupid?

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · May 30, 2026

Do you need to launch from there? I wouldn't think you would have to launch from inside the mod manager. What happens, does the game crash at startup? If so, it could be one of the mods you installed is not updated or working currently.

I think an AOT wings of freedom vr mod would be cool the aot vr games we have are pretty bad and it would be cool for the multiplayer functions as well. fans have been wanting a vr game with the quality of aot game but vr functionality but even the official release sucked

Hey umm.. can i ask if it's possible to ever get "Fire Frolicking 15" (lol) added to the framework too? Is it possible for me at least to add it using the framework somehow myself? Tbh ive been holding off on ever finishing it cuz i know it'd be so amazing in vr, tried vorpy but it was pretty bad though.. couldnt get it to work there at all, 30 bucks to the drain those were.. Thanks for all your hard work on realvr so far though🙏 Note i didnt wanna ask on the latest posts cuz i realise this would be irrelevant to them.. sorry if this remains a bad place to ask for something.

Oh awesoooome! As someone who hasn't (yet) played Crimson Desert, is it playable in VR in 1st person mode, or is it 3rd person only?

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · May 4, 2026

You can switch to 1st person in the game naturally while out of combat. It will jump back into 3rd in combat. There are camera mods as well as camera sliders in the game's settings. I'd try the sliders in game first if you want to make adjustments. 3rd is pretty necessary for combat, as you will be fighting large groups of enemies often.

EDIT: Sorry, I find an anwser in a newer post! After the latest two CD-updates I got problem... The game starts in VR but after Kliff enters the world the game is still in VR for 1s then suddenly exits VR. From that point I can't change it back to VR. I tried everything - so I need help, please.

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · May 3, 2026

I'm sure Luke will update it but no ETA. I'll break this down super simple if you want to roll back. Open any web browser. Copy and paste steam://open/console Steam will open and show a new CONSOLE tab at the top. In the Steam Console window, copy and paste this exact command, then press Enter: download_depot 3321460 3321461 2936467465032599215 Find the downloaded files (They will of course take time to download) The files are now here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_3321460\depot_3321461z You just drag the files from inside that game folder, into the updated game folder in your Steam library. Make sure you have enough space on your C drive for the game to download.

Death Stranding 2 won't start in VR after updating to the latest game version and R.E.A.L. VR 2604.24.2, which should have fixed the aiming issue. Shortly after the game is launched, I see OculusDebugToolCLI.exe console popping with errors: "Unable to connect to service: NotFound: Server endpoint not found ERROR: Unable to start debug session, retrying..." I've tried completely removing R.E.A.L. VR, but that didn't help. Previous DS2 version with the initial R.E.A.L. VR support version works fine. Any help? Quest 3 + Virtual Desktop (VDXR). Thank you. UPDATE: If I kill the OculusDebugToolCLI, game enters VR starts briefly. But then the debug tools start again, and the game exits from VR. UPDATE 2: Updated to the latest Meta Link App (was last updated 4 months ago), but the problem didn't go away. All the same.

"Sorry guys, but this really is the last time I'm doing extra work to support multiple game editions. " - that's really a shame, I'm willing to double my subscription to keep the updates for existing games coming, rolling back and freezing game versions is not always an option :(

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · April 24, 2026

What he means is, doing extra work to support a game across platforms like Game Pass. Not updating support for them in general. He can't account for settings files being locked in encrypted folders or file names being named differently etc. to support every version on every platform. I think that is fair. Sometimes you can work around that yourself if a folder name is different but with KCD2 for example, it was more complicated than that. Plus, I have had to buy Game Pass multiple times just to test things when I have zero desire to have Game Pass, which is another issue with trying to support every version across platforms.

i'll go for the pimax air se once it's really available, i guess that the 2500*2500 oled is already a huge upgrade from the quest 3, really happy you have dream air, that means we will get support for those headsets that is a huge plus for me. i already see the borders quite clearly with the standard H-fov optimization in my quest 3 (i'm very near to lenses) but i guess i can crop a bit more in vertical

I am confused 🤔 People can already subscribe to support Luke. That is how it always worked until recently with the big D...... yeah I am just going to leave it like that 😁..... anyways..... things changed after that because people voted to have free (public) and paid (Early Access). So that is where we are now :) If you are saying you want him to drop down to $5, then I don't think he is going to do that. I can't think of any way of having a middle tier that makes sense either.

Hey Luke, glad to see you're back in the game cranking out new framework updates! I wanted to ask again if it would be possible to update the framework to check for FoV changes and apply them on the fly (even 1Hz would be sufficient). 3D displays utilize small FoV changes to control the convergence. It would also be nice to have when dialing in the FoV to use as the default. I tried the camera movement you suggested before, and that didn't work to adjust convergence. So, it would be really great to be able to properly use convergence adjustment and hotkeys on the fly Thanks for your work!

Sorry to ask i got banned on dark souls using mod my bad i was warned not blaming luck for this. Emailed support and they said if I remove vr mod data remove my characters account we be unbanned in 10 days. I have deleted ds remastered folder deleted save data Does the mod leave data anywhere else love to get game unbanned as the only one I have not completed. Again my own fault I was warned

B
Brandon(Post Maester) · April 23, 2026

I would just ask them directly, so you know what they want for sure. I got banned in all of them 😋 I play through solo anyways though. Here is a quick AI answer. Not sure if it is entirely accurate, so be careful, but just for reference. Main save location for Dark Souls Remastered (Steam/PC): C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\Documents\NBGI\DARK SOULS REMASTERED\[A long number folder]\DRAKS0005.sl2 The [long number] folder is usually your old Games for Windows Live ID or a Steam-related profile ID — there’s often just one. Steps to fully delete your saves (recommended for the ban lift): Close Dark Souls Remastered completely (and Steam if possible, to avoid sync issues). Navigate to the folder above and delete the entire DARK SOULS REMASTERED folder (or just the DRAKS0005.sl2 file inside the number folder). This removes all characters and progress. Handle Steam Cloud (very important, as it can restore old saves): Right-click Dark Souls Remastered in your Steam library → Properties → General. Uncheck "Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud" (or "Steam Cloud"). This prevents the cloud from re-downloading the banned/tampered save. Optional but safer: Clear any Steam userdata cloud cache Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[Your Steam ID number] Look for the folder with the game’s AppID (570940 for DSR). Delete any files/folders related to saves inside it (remote, etc.), then restart Steam. Launch the game and create a fresh character. Play offline first if needed, then go online once you have a clean save. Extra tips: Back up the save file first (copy DRAKS0005.sl2 somewhere safe) in case you want to restore it later — but don’t use the old one online if it triggered the ban. In-game, you can also delete characters from the Load Game screen (it shows options at the bottom). After deleting, contact the support team that banned you (likely Bandai Namco/FromSoftware) and confirm the clean save — some players report it takes time or a ticket for the lift. This should cover local files and cloud sync. Let me know if the folder path looks different on your PC!480msFast

L
LukeRoss · April 23, 2026

As I wrote in the post, it's basically a no-go without deep, explicit support from the engine. You need to maintain two full rendering paths with different resolutions, and that's not something most engines do.
