S3E12: That Man in Istanbul

Alright, thats quite enough vaguely muddling through the depths of Eurospy. Going forward, it's Bangers Only- and kicking that off is That Man in Istanbul, or as it will come to be known, the Ballad of Tony Mercedes.

But we simply couldn't do it alone. Joining us on this episode is A.J. from The Worst of All Possible Worlds!

catching up slowly and inexorably, the running gag for this is great and the henchman who refuses to get casually executed! lmao. It's a shame that after the first few movies (not you fx-18) were pretty enjoyable/worth talking about, eurospy became a lot worse and less interesting! you've made a lot of gold thread out of the straw and found a few gems in it (the theme song for secret agent fireball, the homoerotic scene in passport to hell) but the idea of slogging out all of them, oof. There's too many for that! I do hope at some point you'll run down the list of names of Eurospy movies that didn't make the cut because plenty of them have fun titles at least! Mission Bloody Mary, The Spy In Your Eye, Secret Agent Super Dragon, Kiss Kiss Kill Kill (distinct from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang lol)...

I will pay so much patreon/nebula money for y'all to actually make KJB's The Ballad of Tony Mnemonic! Like, for real after Dracula's Ex-Girlfriend, please?!?!

Y'all mentioned in passing the idea of a 007 musical and now I can't stop thinking of Q's doing an upbeat patter song as he shows off all the latest gizmos and gadgets

Came here straight after listening to The Worst Of All Possible Worlds but I guess AJ wasn't ready to leave my ears...

Fun fact, sour candies can help with panic attacks, or so I've been told after having more than a panic attack per day for two weeks. Just think that could make a fun detail for the stage musical adaptation I assume Nebula is willing to produce.

This is a bit of a strange recommendation, but I genuinely think y'all would get a kick out of watching Robin Hood (2018) for a bonus episode. The opening scene is maybe the most deranged and excellent thing I've ever seen in a movie, and the rest of the movie largely keeps in the same vein

If y'all do the equalizer, you're obligated to do the prequel, Man on fire.

A suitcase? Alice, you'd love to have a handcuff handcuffed to your wrist.

these eurospy movies have really captured the essence of the season 1 of pure bond. I love the season of "not bonds" but all these obscure eurospy films are fascinating to me

They mentioned a KJB Discord, where can I join?

Past episodes have mentioned that it's actually just a channel in the Trash Future discord, but I am curious about this as well

I have come to humbly suggest a bonus episode which is a better parody of the genre than Austin Powers and a better Bond movie than... most of them. Paul Feig directed Melissa McCarthy vehicle Spy, where I discovered she is an amazing physical comedian and that inexplicably Jason Statham can be a fun comic actor

B
Bran Mac Muffin · February 4, 2024

Statham is AWESOME at sending up himself and the genre in that. Eminently quotable. "Nothing kills me. I'm immune to 179 different types of poison. I know because I ingested them all at once when I was deep undercover in an underground poison-ingesting crime ring"

K
Katie Brobst · February 1, 2024

Alice, you can't just say that the movie has a racistly hidden cabinet and not explain wtf that means

The Soviet Union was also passe in the 60s because they already definitively HAD all of the nuclear secrets that westerners were worried about other people having. China's first successful H-bomb didn't get tested until 1967, two years after this movie, while the Soviets had been known to have them for over a decade.
