S2E18.75: The Raid
Abi's away on business (Dome), so it's up to just Alice and Devon to talk about the 2011 Indonesian action film 'The Raid'. A team of cops descend upon a tower block to kill the crime lord on the top floor. All that stands in their way? A million extremely damp guys who all know the martial art Pencak Silat.
But we can't handle Dudes Rocking of this calibre alone, so we're joined by the wonderful Ben McLeay, host of the podcast Boonta Vista, Co-founder of the Two Bit Movie Club, and inventor of BORLFF!

Idk what Alice is talking about when she says the Hamilton Khaki X Mach isn't expensive. Like sure, it's no Rolex or Omega but it was still a cool 1345 Euros at release, I wouldn't call that cheap by any means even for a watch, and it's definitely a pricey purchase for a cop in Indonesia.
"Tapped like a maple tree," is a phrase I will not soon forget. 😂
Love the Raid series. The sequel has some of my favorite mini bosses with hammer girl, and baseball boy, plus the prison mud fight is breathtaking. Plus the car chase scene were they took ou the passenger seats and had the cameramen dress in seat camo tickles me
the first time i watched this film, i immediately became a huge Mad Dog fan. when it got to the bit where he squares up with Jaka & the camera pulls back to reveal that Joe Taslim is about five inches taller than Yayan Ruhian i think i moaned audibly
I learned about Silat from Tom Clancy's "NetForce" series of future-internet-crime FBI novels.
yo can you get tom and demi back for an insane children’s movie? I crave chaos
Sniper guys are real lunch pail kind of goons. Come in, do the job, leave. Great fundamentals
someday you guys should do Black Rain if you ever start doing Michael Duglas detective movies
Can't wait for you guys to cover the sequel The Raid: Shadow Legends
I'm surprised none of you mentioned that the corrupt old lieutenant looks exactly like Lee Marvin.
I remember being super psyched about this movie because I'd already heard about pencak silat from reading Tom Clancy Presents: Tom Clancy's Net Force, A TOM CLANCY PRODUCTION (writtenbysteveperry). I went to rope in my friends and discovered that two of them actually practiced silat themselves. The only video file we managed to find featured subtitles that started out extremely spotty and got gradually worse until they just vanished altogether in the last half hour. Absolutely one of the best movie experiences of my life.
Don't just do Rogue One - watch Andor and talk us through it!
I really want to know what you guys think of the frankly baffling 2013 Indonesian-American movie The Philosophers, featuring one of the most bizarre student-teacher relationships committed to film
Personally I think Dredd was a victim of the 3D movie fad as I skipped seeing it at the cinema as there weren't any 2D screenings at any cinemas in my area. The Raid is an enjoyable film.
The best Indonesian martial arts action movie directed by a Welshman ever. A Welshman with the most Welsh name you've ever heard. I also see this movie as a horror film as well as a brutal action movie, it's just so violent and the amazing crawlspace scene.
Dredd came out like 6 months after this and Gareth Evans must have been "jumping up and down on his hat" angry
But Dredd was a flop and The Raid was an international sensation that got a sequel? I'm sure he was fine, I love both movies.
Perfect 0?²⁷3 rating
Will we be doing a double feature with Dredd?
In Bali they have a style of martial arts for dealing with drunk Australians
*Bernie Sanders voice* when we will have universally mandated dome leave
Also! Absolute points for referencing like, my favorite part of the warriors!
I remember suggesting this on a stream, I knew you all would love it, and I'm so happy you did!
lesson learned: if you bring a gun to a knife fight, use it
