S2E18.5: Speed Racer
As the Winter of Content comes to a close, we tackle the Wachowski Sisters' 2008 film adaptation of the 1960s anime Mach Gogogo! Recieved badly upon its' initial release, the film has since seen a renaissance and a critical reappraisal as a musing on art, artists, cycles of trauma, and what it truly means to create art under a capitalist system. It's also a movie about racing cars SO fast

I swear up and down and on my next paycheck that they slowed down the intro music by like 0.05x just to mess with our heads
Turns out the bit about beating the chimp for biting a child isn't strictly true. A chimp did bite a child near the beginning of production, and then was removed from set for some quiet time. They then went to extra efforts and expense to film Spritle and the chimp separately. Then, late in production, a trainer hit a chimp in a training session. The animal wasn't injured, but it was enough to give the film an Unacceptable rating despite the otherwise good production practices. The whole report is really interesting! https://humanehollywood.org/production/speed-racer/
i had several of the lego sets for this movie, and played the tie-in DS game soooo much. it's definitely not a good movie but like Titan AE, bad movies can be a fun childhood memory.
I used to love my speed racer hot wheels truck I had as a kid
I watched this last night with my wife, and honestly I think it'd be a perfect movie to watch on psychedelics. The color balance is right for it, all the weird shit just becomes entertaining while that fucked up and it has good messaging and vibes.
The focus on driver safety in the movie contrasts starkly with the cartoon (at least as it was in America, which was the version I had on CD as a child), where people would JUST fucking. die from encounters with or just near the increasingly callous and unemotional Speed Racer who just doesn't really react at all. Speed Racer: the Terminator
Basically the CPC made the ending of the Fight Club movie the same as the book ending
You'll be watching Jupiter Ascending as well then, yes? I'm not sure what to think about that film and I need some KJB assistance. Is it bad, is it good but with a total lack of chemistry between the leads? Please tell me.
Might want to ask Dominic Monaghan why Mathew Fox's career didn't pop after Lost
Hi just to say the milk drinking thing is completely fake and made up! love your work
Hey in case you see my name for the next episode and are confused, It's not a bit. I am transitioning. Have a wonderful day!
good for you (hugs)
Winners drinking milk is actually a tradition in the Indy 500. so points for the Wachoski sisters pulling that deep lore. https://www.sbnation.com/indycar/2016/5/27/11803820/indianapolis-500-winner-drink-milk
If you want racing scenes of a similar vibe to Speed Racer that are actually engaging, and gorgeously animated, you should check out Takeshi Koike's Redline
Devon I beseech you to make Claire and Abi watch a Bionicles movie for a bonus
This is a completely off the wall rec but if you want to watch a film with interesting things to say about masculinity, patron recommendation is y'all watch the 1986 The Little Shop of Horrors. I know thematically it doesn't line up but Seymour as a protagonist is just too interesting, from either ending.
This piece on the Big Trans Vibes of that movie is an all-timer https://gutsmagazine.ca/no-one-makes-it-out-alive/
You guys have got to do an episode about Redline now.
This movie should have been 40 minutes shorter. Get rid of the kid and the chimp, cut the race scenes down a bit and you've got a good movie.
No one talked bout the two hand facial sparky is givin that milk? Like nothin?
The soundtrack does an awful lot of the heavy lifting in pushing the story forward. Something I never realized until Alice mentioned how hard it was to get drops from this film.
Zero Dark Thirty must hold some kind of KJB record for "Most references to a movie we haven't discussed on the pod"
I'm stiiiiiiiil in a dreaaaaaaaaam, Snake Oiler
Snake Oiler is peak bisexual representation.
Thank you Devon for the Hiroyuki Sanada love, he's an amazing actor I have loved him since Ringu and Twilight Samurai. And the Benson/Moorehead shoutout, I love those guys.
great movie unless you're epileptic then this may be the worst possible thing to watch
SO excited you all did this movie! I loved the point about why all the women are phenomenally attractive, that made so much sense. For some reason, I always thought Trixie and Speed gave t4t energy in this, but maybe that's just me.
I suddenly remembered one of the episodes of the 60s anime involved smuggling gold disguised as car paneling like Goldfinger, but it makes marginally more sense(?) because the car was actually more like a huge train. How or why that made sense to race against ‘normal’ cars is anyone’s guess
When Alice said the name of Roger Allam's character she did it in a perfect Roger Allam delivery.
Apparently drinking milk at the end is an actual racing thing? Like they do it at the Indy 500
The drinking milk in the winners circle bit is a reference to a real practice in NASCAR! The dairy industry offered a cash reward to whoever won the Indy 500 *if* they opted to drink a glass of milk as part of their celebration, and it just stuck. I'm immediately conscious that I should clarify I do not think this makes the milk thing less weird, it's just a fault of us Americans being fucking weird not the movie
Intensely thinking about the old anime dub, where Speed confronts Racer X about their shared brotherhood, and Racer X does what any good brother does; Punches Speed in the stomach hard enough to instantly render him unconscious. And then leaves.
Two things 1) When they first mentioned there was a chimp I got nervous, because I thought they meant an assassin, and it took me several minutes to realize they meant an actual Chimpanzee. 2) I guess this is a question for Anime fans out there (I only have a passing knowledge, and am not a huge anime fan myself) but I've noticed a lot of older anime dubs involve the voice actors saying extremely long, redundant sentences very very quickly. As in "Yes that is a good idea I like your ideas and when you say your good ideas out loud then we have a good plan because your ideas are good and now you have said them out loud so we can do them so that is the plan and we will do it." in about the same space of time it might normally take to say "That's a good idea." Which I assume is what the intro was parodying. And so I think my question is 'what's up with that?' (It's not only Speed Racer; it's a feature of a lot of old dubs where it's less thematically appropriate.)
2) my guess would be to make the dub fit the animation as the same phrase in english and japanese may be wildly varying length
The DS game for this movie was awesome tho
This is my 2nd favorite intro, behind the first OSS 117 episode
I’m 30 seconds into the intro and this is already a banger
I feel like we're edging closer to Kill James Bond reviews Cloud Atlas
Refuse to go entirely
Hyped for the listen
I knew from the first time I saw it that it was destined to be rediscovered as a great film.
Yooooo does that mean you're going to do Redline at some point
SPEEEEDDDD RACERRRR. I've only listened to the intro and while normally I refrain form commenting till listening to the whole episode but I must say I love it.
this is a good af movie also first
