Episode 31.5: Flushed Away

Alright look, I did an Abi on this one. I swear to god i remembered this one being okay. Instead, enjoy a slow descent into rat madness at the hands of Aardman's first (I havent checked if this is true) foray into a full CGI movie. It's about the great replacement. I won't elaborate on this

I turned this on on my shower speaker after listening on my headphones for the first part, and the first thing that comes blasting out of the speakers is November's "RAT PANTIES"

the insane thing is that the plot of this movie is the same plot as in an episode of Aaahh!! Real Monsters, which was done both better and in about fifteen minutes back in the 90s

Unfortunately I have been described as looking like Whitey on my old, pre-queer glow up passport photo :(

I always thought the Minions were knocked off from the Raving Rabbids from the Ubisoft video games.

C

Extremely glad I listened to the end so I could discover the next bonus ep is on a film that I a) love dearly and b) realise I haven’t seen in many years so it may in fact be bad. Looking forward to it.

On the topic of rats is Alfredo Linguini Gusteau from Ratatouille a mecha

Technically this is canon, there's an alternate ending where he splits Peter O'Toole in half with a giant sword made of metal lions which causes him to explode.

i'd recommend you watch le samoraui (1967) ; its a great french film about a lone assassin, and doesn't get too much love in english language circles

C

one of my favourite thrillers alongside 'day of the jackal' (1971) which you should also watch about an attempt to assassinate charles de gaulle

I recently watched Spies Are Forever (by Starkid productions) and it seems like it may fit the KJB vibe! It is a filmed musical rather than a normal film though so possibly not relevant. Either way a highly entertaining watch :D

You know I remember seeing the 3D Simpsons episode in an IMAX at one point. Did that actually happen or is it one of those implanted memories they use to identify replicants?

They did!

(1) I want to note that the bad guy in this movie has the exact same motivation as the John Malkovitch octopus from Pengwings of Madagascar (2) It was glossed over in the pod, but I wanted Devon to elaborate on the "I've seen rats catching the Tube" comment.

I suppose that "I don't want to think about that name" is the best I'm gonna get with my old name. Maybe DeeDee Megadoodoo will do better

J
Jack Bushell · May 4, 2022

Have you considered doing Valiant (2005) as a followup? It's spy themed right? I think? I remember the villain being a Nazi falcon and nothing else

N
Neverlost22 · May 4, 2022

It was fairly unremarkable though. Are we just trying to get them to set up a kids' account?

H
Hannah · May 4, 2022

Honestly let them do a good film for once. I nominate The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, because when I read the book it had a non-Singaporean use the phrase ‘talk cock’, which I’m sure was the main message Le Carré was hoping to get across. Also, Alice would enjoy it.

R

Ah, it's a furry bait movie, but make it racist

N
Neverlost22 · May 4, 2022

I feel slightly responsible for recommending this; I saw it when I was 9 and my friends and I loved it. I thought the Bond reference in the opening montage and the fact that Roddy was acting like a wannabe Bond up until this persona (and his tuxudo) fell apart would have made this a good pick. 9-year-old me didn't clock the racism. This was a great episode though, so I don't feel too bad: keep up the great work!

Maybe y'all could watch some swords and sandals... Kill Conan? Kill Krull? Kill Fritz R.R. Tolkien?

H

The incredible cast list made me think of another awful kids film that I don’t really think has a lot to say about masculinity but IS a Bonus Craig Film: Golden Compass

God's Eepiest Soldier · May 4, 2022

"the criteria are well known and bad, not well known and good, or not well known and bad" so what i'm hearing is there's an outside chance you could do sword of the valiant (1984), feat. sean connery as the green knight, doused in glitter and really kind of regretting his wiccan hockey pads + no shirt costume combo

D
Dana Himrich · May 4, 2022

I regret to admit that I was obsessed with this movie for about a year after it came out, to the point of watching it three times in one weekend. I was ten years old and loved all things Aardman.

B
Bees McBee · May 4, 2022

Also it was Odysseus. Scylla and Charybdis are from the Odyssey.

A

They also appear in the Argonautica. Just for your own future reference. (And The Aeneid too.)
