S4E48.5: Mannequin
Mannequin (1987) asks and answers one simple question: What if there was a quirked up white boy so good at crafting department store window displays that management didn't mind that he was obviously fucking one of the mannequins after the store closes?

Have…you people never seen Pretty In Pink?
Abbie's comment about it being like Fenwick's on Northumberland Street was spot on, because people *do* care about what's in the window, to the extent where at Christmas there are queues just to see the window.
I’ve just watched Andrzej Żuławski's “Possession,” on criterion and yall have absolutely got to check it out even if just for yourselves. It’s like…what if James Bond (Helllo Sam Neill) came home from a mission to find his wife (Helllooo Isabelle Adjani) was possessed. Idk it’s like James Bond meets The Antichrist. The performances and direction veer from brilliant to baffling. It’d be a perfect Halloween episode.
At the end of The Usual Suspects, Kayser Soze goes non-Verbal
Did not take November for a beeper, but I'm happy for her
Cantonese version of "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" = George Lam - Flower Street No. 70 (album name)
"Sorry I think I left my submarine on" was a great line.
I am so glad you all enjoyed this movie as media for the gays. I had some trauma from the film and the RealDoll community in the 2000s and hearing your take on it was healing in so many ways
35:56 the stunt car?
this ep was a masterpiecce
fucking DELIGHTED to google the cast and discover that the homophobic gay security guard is played by the guy who plays rizzo on mash, ANOTHER property that’s huge on “welcome to da Homosocial Zone everyone’s gay and homophobic all the time” my man has a niche
Oh yea, G.W Bailey. He was also the head evil cop guy in Short Circuit.
I'd be embarrassed to be picked up on a Hardley. Dude wants to get my panties wet, pick me up on a cherry red Super Magna.
You definitely need to do Pretty In Pink. It is one of my favourite movies of all time AND it comes with more Andrew McCarthy, more James Spader, a healthy dose of the stupendous Molly Ringwald (Queen) and then, just because that's not enough, Harry Dean Fucking Stanton as Molly's dad.
I am tired of seeing (hearing) Will and Grace getting stolen Valor for retreading ground that Brothers (Showtime and late night syndication) actually broke almost a decade earlier. (We may also partially credit Soap, a decade earlier than that, as a necessary failed experiment along the way.)
"Hollywood Montrose" ... Fun fact: Montrose (specifically centered at the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer) is (or was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s) the heart of the gay ghetto in Houston, TX (hometown)!
It's a shame that Nova had to turn in her double boiler and silicone gun after Abi fired her from the flandle project for taking too much time putting art and craft into each one and falling extremely behind on her quotas.
Nova all but mentioned Castle of Cagliostro where Zenigata leads squadrons of liquid cops. She knew Castle of Cagliostro was what she should have said I am sure
Whew, I was worried Abi wasn't going to say watch any movie free on open subtitle. I need to hear my friend! (The friend being watch any movie free...)
Also a friend of mine watched this a while back and asked if Early just based his entire deal around this performance?
For the whole first half of this episode I was so confused because I was sure I had seen this movie as a young'un. After some further research (Google), it seems I saw the sequel as a child without having seen the first entry at all. Wonderful episode strange wonderful people in my phone. Until next time.
The opening titles where designed by none other than Sally Cruikshank (who also did the titles for Top Secret!) , an influential underground animator and designer popular with the 70s-80s art crowd who had a whole pushpin studios meets Memphis modern thing going on. If you ever wondering why early era Nickelodeon looked Like That it’s partly her influence. She put most of her stuff on YouTube, check out Face Like A Frog the short she did with Danny Elfman
Devon saying “We should do Ratatouille at some point” has my hopes soaring, dreams within grasp
The reverse Isekai is a great way to describe this movie and Weird Science. Man, there were a lot of movies like this in the 80s, weren't there. EDIT: Doctor Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine is both a terrible movie and a movie that needs to be remade.
Next live show November should just bring out an Aldis Lamp. Addendum about the Schrödinger’s Mannequin Sex Video. Does being recorded on camera count as being seen? Would that be a video just of Johnny fucking a mannequin? Or is the true nature of Kim Catrall now on film? Does watching a video count as ‘seeing’? Is there now a video containing proof of a mannequin coming to life and reverting that no-one can actually witness? Will the X-Files people have to like, play the video, look away and listen for the change between mannequin or human? Did the Ancient Egyptian Gods (who are real and still around in the 80s) account for the invention of photography and video recording? Does that CCTV footage contain an objective truth which can never be witnessed by human eyes but is inarguably true?
FBC agent detected
I think what November is trying to say when she says "I miss this kind of homophobia" is just a representation of queer people that is goofy and ridiculous, but not cruel. A pov of gay people that is poking fun at them, but not in a mean way, and in a way that gay people can enjoy.
Checked out the animated opening - immediately recognizable as the work of Sally Cruikshank, who is an icon. Certified Philistine Abby moment
Oh my god November, you can’t just ask people why they’re white!
Smash cut to 10 years from now, when Abi is the first trans billionaire because of the overwhelming popularity of Flandles.
I'm confused. Are we not allowed to call Abi's pussy the "spam folder" or the "long montage"?
I thought it was “X Box.”
I went into this movie soooooo ready to be like "another bad time this podcast led me into" and had an annoyingly great time. The Almodovar comparison is dead on and it's absurd to me that more people aren't picking up on what it's doing
love a young James Spader, just watched the 90s film Bad Influence with him as the lead.
mannequin-fucking be damned my boy can work a window display
Banger episode. I laughed so much.
Afraid Gwyneth Paltrow already beat you to the candle thing
oh I worked with a guy like that once
Make the Phlændelabrum and the hannuka Musnoralight
1:11:11 It's over Tranikin, I have the high ground
Is this about the male gaze or the male gays?
So this is modern Pygmalion and Galatea?
Holywood does reprise their role
The Evil Gay Mall? Yeah he was actually originally voiced by Peter Serafinowicz in the first film.
Speaking of James Spader, apparently there is a very widely held belief that his Blacklist character Raymond Reddington is a transmasc character. Like headcanon held by people who are not themselves trans or allies because it's so heavily implied
His character carried that otherwise very stupid show. I agree it's heavily implied. I don't know where they ended up going with it because I stopped watching so it might have been a red herring fake out, but the show definitely wanted you think that was the case
Adding to the list: - Australian Johnny - English Johnny - Soulfull Johnny
Please tell her that I am in love with November's fuckass little notes where she gets too November with it. They are a delight.
I used to watch this movie as a child. Which probably make more sense now than it did then. So I'm very ready to have a good time. Abbie: "is this... pre Sex And The City?" Me: *gets up walks around the room, sits back down* Me: *through gritted teeth* "I'm ready to have a nice time"
I thought that was a ridiculous question and that they were 30 years apart and then they actually dropped the dates and revealed that they were only about a decade apart But still, the '80s versus the 2000s
Love this gay ass film. I wanna be a cunty mannequin
YouTuber Matt Baume had a great video on this movie re good portrayal of gay characters Great moment when Hollywood asks if his thighs are too fat and protagonist says they're not and they look great and then he has to visibly shake himself because he was getting a little bit too lost in the sauce
That's where I knew it from! Had a vague memory of "I've watched something recapping this before"
