S4E49: Jackie Brown

The third film by Quentin Tarantino, Jackie Brown is an homage to the blaxploitation movies of the 70s and 80s- specifically those starring Pam Grier, who stars as an airline hostess out of luck and out of time, who plays the cops (Michael Keaton) off against an arms dealer (Samuel L Jackson) in pursuit of half a million simoleons.

I don't know what happened in this one. Maybe Diabolik released some Exhilarating Gas into the recording studio before we began or something.

Hey mind your business, name's not important · October 17, 2026

I have a few of notes. 1. Coke is an infinitely better soft drink than Pepsi. There is an anise flavored Coke product sold as a digestive. 2. The entire film takes place in the in the South Bay area of LA County and City. Ordell's apartment is in Hermosa Beach of Redondo Beach, not Venice. The mall is in Torrance. Max's office is in Compton, which is inland of the South Bay area, it's due east. I'm sorry for this, you set off one of autistic special interests, the geography of LA County and City. As another astute listener, Ray is also in Out of Sight, which makes sense since like Jackie Brown it's based on an Elmore Leonard book. In the case of Jackie Brown, the book is called Rum Punch. Rum Punch is set in West Palm Beach. Ordell and Louis are the two antagonists in Leonard's The Switch and they are presented as even bigger fuck ups in that book. This whole post is brought to you by autistic interests.

Just going to note that Rum Punch, the Elmore Leonard novel this was adapted from, was written two years before Chungking Express.

Yesssss surprise Wong Kar Wai love in here! You might like Three Times by Hou Hsiao-hsien also - it's such a good companion piece to Chungking Express

This is absolutely the best Quentin Tarantino movie. The real magic of Hollywood is Pam Grier finding that amazing suit off the rack. Chungking Express/Fallen Angels double episode. You can't do just one! The first Wang Kar Wai I saw was Fallen Angels at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge MA. Got a coffee upstairs at Cafe Algiers and smoked about 12 cigarettes while feeling amazingly cool just for having been there.

Lilt is holy to me- so much that I refused to buy the fanta flavour after they killed it (because the new can design was just a massacre) and subsisted off of the Aldi off brand stuff for a while before giving up. It’s up there for me with Ben Shaw’s cream soda as one of the greatest victims of corporate minimalist rebranding. Needless to say, the mention of ‘Lilk’ caused me to be physically repulsed. Addendum. ‘Red Leather Jacket’ … Emma Swan?

I always felt Jackie Brown represented some kind of timeline split. Like Tarantino could have moved in the direction Jackie Brown represented, or could have (as he did) making the almost cartoon goofy movies. I want to live in the universe where we got more Jackie Brown. But we don't.

Jackie Brown is also like the sexiest movie Tarantino ever made

I have drunk the banana and chocolate Fanta and can confirm it has the exact "curious, accurate, why, urgh" flavour profile.

I will not have you diss Sam Jacksons crap little ponytail & beard combo. I had an unexpectedly intense bisexual moment about the way his character looks when I watched this movie the first time round

I think that nova was under a misconception that this movie came before pulp fiction, and i think thats a little funny.

but why are they pulling the money out just as neoliiberal alternance is hitting mexico, getting them flush for the internationalization. like...start a small telecom biz, use the spools of copper to hide your arms movement...

My most diabolical creation of all time is a t-shirt I designed as a Christmas present to my brother that has a picture of Tarantino and the text "I'm not a podiatrist but I'll take a l👅👅k"
