Hey, Devon here. As you well know I've been working with a few gazan families to raise money for their daily living costs in the genocide. We're putting all our energy into this one campaign as we have a real chance to get Ahmed and his family out of Gaza. Please, if you can help in any way, be that by donating yourself or sharing the link with friends and family, it will mean the world to me.

38:07 What's an aga?
"Aga Range Cooker" is what Wikipedia calls it. It's an oven, basically but I believe not on gas or electric but you fill it with something to burn. It apparently heats the room pretty well and the top has rings you can take out to place pots on/in it. It's REALLY hot and made from iron so that burn must be really nasty.
Saw a great musical called Oliver Cromwell is Really Very Sorry and that ALSO had a Welsh actor play (specifically) Protestant God (among other roles, so I didn't realize the Welsh accent for God was his normal voice, I thought it was a choice lmao). Just funny that it's happened more than once
gotta say between this and the silence, november's info dumps have done more to make me think there can be something beautiful to christianity than the past thirty years of my life.
I was a bit worried about this episode because I watched this film for a class once and instantly formed an attachment, but I really. Enjoyed isn't the right word, but appreciated, this episode. Especially the conversation about her being radicalized and it's not that she's Inherently A Bad Person but someone who's been traumatized and has a reaction to it. Religious mortification and the sanctification of suffering is a topic I'm really interested in - if anyone else is, this blog (https://www.pangyrus.com/place/living-with-pain-the-desert-fathers-and-mothers-the-hindu-festival-of-thaipusam-and-the-new-york-city-marathon/) talks about the topic well, in my opinion. (Eta: unless you, like the three commentors, have strong opinions on the socioeconomic status of Tamil people in Singapore, a subject about which I am completely ignorant). But it's a complex topic!
1 Corinthians 13:3: The Movie (“If I give my body to be burned, without love, it means nothing at all”)
A universal and presumably apostolic solvent
Maudification of the flesh
Please do the fast and furious with the safe
A great film for analysing religious fundamentalism is the 2014 German film 'Stations of the Cross' , the whole film is composed of 14 shots too, so it has some interesting cinematic qualities.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I'm enjoying this thelogical themed unofficial season even more than the official heist season. It is all handled so well and so thoughtfully. In particular I owe Abigail an apology - I remember being very nervous when they did 'The Wonder' that she would just have a kneejerk 'New Atheist' style dismissive approach to faith but she has been thoughtful, nuanced and engaging and even if I don't agree with her views I'm fascinated to hear them.
hard agree with november re: horror movies. there's nothing that disappoints me more in a horror movie than one that starts out cool and creepy and psychological and then in the latter half it's all "oh no! a scary face!" and jump scares
If there is a car related mini season then if I may request Driven with Sylvester Stallone, it's not a good film. also there's so many other potential car related ones that would be great, but I'm not going to just go "oh here is my list of requests"
I realized I was looking for the word suggest and said request, sorry
Banger episode for a banger film. I think this is something there wasn’t quite time to get into fully in the episode, but I think the film is extremely prescient about the way that a lot of people increasingly self-radicalise themselves into these destructive, repressive identities without ever actually connecting with the existing core or community around these identities - like the fact Maud never even walks past a church that I can remember feels like a very intentional absence on the part of Glass and if you wanted to make this a documentary you just need to flip the gender and have her be on twitter a lot more. Obviously it was already happening in 2019 but not as visibly as it is now.
Could we get (or is there already) a heads up of what the next bonus episode is going to be?
Yeah it's gonna be The Mission
So you've broken into religious horror, what are the odds you'll watch Martyrs (2008)?
as someone who made the mistake of trying to get into horror, i' have never felt more seen, and more appreciated, and more acknowledged, then November talking about watching the scary movie in the bright sunlight. go off queen, thats how every horror movie should be seen.
If you’re looking to expand into other Abrahamic faiths, you could watch Aronofsky’s Pi for some Hasidic numerology action.
The mystery objects being speculated about at 23:30 are unpopped popcorn kernels, there’s a brief shot of the bag as Maude’s scattering them
Hi all! Was just wondering if anyone else got any static with their chuffed donation, my bank called me & needed my permission to let it through. So I'm probably on a Trump gestapo list now, haha.
Don't worry, that often happens with donations abroad. If usually doesn't happen if you use a major credit card, but I know I can't donate with my debit card from my local bank because they freak out if I even purchase anything from an overseas seller.
Handjob guy made me think of a witness in a case of mine who said to the cops, about verbatim, “I was just trying to get laid.”
Feeling perceived as someone who also wears a saints medallion (st Sebastian) for non religious purposes.
If you're still looking for more religious type movies, I highly recommend The Borderlands/The Final Prayer (different titles in UK and US)
if Abby needs inspiration for her pick, First Reformed is right there, even though it's more of a November movie
My husband was SCREAMING this. I'd love to hear them talk about First Reformed - it's truly incredible.
It's Maudin Time 🦇
Wtf is this British word y'all are saying that Maude burns her hand on? Arga?
An Aga? It's a kind of oven from sweden with more doors on the front so you can cook more things at once at different temperatures. Generally you'd only see them in affluent households
Loved this coverage. I almost became Catholic instead of transitioning. This is definitely "A Kind of Guy." Catholicism is great for people looking for practices to justify self-harm, and there's absolutely a lonely, heterodox Christian/Catholic community on the internet. I've separately lost relatives to online Evangelical cults that discourage church attendance. Rough world out there.
Not particularly related to this movie (apart from it being really queer) but the recent French movie Misericordia could be interesting to cover. Really unusual and funny film about France’s Most Suspicious Man.
Suggestion for Robbery Season: if Mad Money (2008) isn't on your list, it absolutely should be.
Hi there. I just want to put an idea in your head for the car series: in The Fast and The Furious, Race Wars is diegetic double entendre
One of my fav horror movies, always recommend. It makes me so uncomfortable 😣
Unrelated to the episode, just wanted to recommend a movie: the circle (der kreis) 2014, it's a movie about the swiss gay organisation "der kreis" during the 50ies. Saw the movie yesterday at a screening where one of the documented gay activist made a speech. Afterwards the director also spoke about how there are many parallels between what's happening now and what was happening back then. Thought you or some of the audience might be interested in this movie. It got international attention back in the day (which I shamefully just learned about yesterday). Wish you all a wonderful day!
When I was a young Christian fundamentalist child, I did literally believe that I could literally do magic, I just didn't think I had enough faith to pull it off. I believed that I could quite literally walk on water and literally move mountains There's an unironic Catholic reading of the movie where a heretic refuses to go to church and find community and support and tries to muddle through it on her own and pays the worst fate Probably said this in the Silence comment section too, but it's more relevant here: Japanese nationalist and gay man Yukio Mishima (PewDiePie's favorite author) says his first orgasm was while masturbating to a painting of a martyred Saint Sebastian. Mishima performed ritual sudoku after a failed military coup And as always, watch "Truman Show" for a Paradise Lost/Plato religious movie
I remember meeting Jennifer Ehle (Amanda) when she and Danny John-Joules opened the drama studio at our high school in 1995. She was very famous at the time as it was just months after the BBC Pride & Prejudice came out where she was Elizabeth Bennett to Colin Firth's Mr Darcy. Albeit Danny being Cat in Red Dwarf was better known to the students. I appreciate the podcasters would of been very young then so probably unaware of the Ehle/Firth mania in the media at the time.
The point near the end about psychological horror is why American psycho is my favourite one
The Ecstasy St Teresa is experiencing in Bernini's sculpture is absolutely sexual in nature. The whole work (if you've never seen it, the life-size marble statue of the saint is hovering in the air, born aloft on clouds while maybe the twinkiest angel in art history prepares to jam a golden arrow into her and she has an exceedingly... passionate expression on her face) is based on a passage from the saint's writings, which generally gets quoted when the piece is discussed or explained: "I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, and at the iron's point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it. The soul is satisfied now with nothing less than God. The pain is not bodily, but spiritual; though the body has its share in it. It is a caressing of love so sweet which now takes place between the soul and God, that I pray God of His goodness to make him experience it who may think that I am lying."
I always called this a trad cath horror film cause it’s someone inventing their own religion based on aesthetics and vibes - traditionally part of a catholic priests” job is to put a stop to someone coming up with brand new ways god told them to hurt themselves - although until this episode I hadn’t connected it to the (Satanic!) sin of Pride and the contempt she has for people who like, go to choir practice - anyway if you want Jesus Camp try the book Dayspring where god is embodied and having a ton of gay sex
Oh I just left a comment saying the same thing, that the Catholic reading is that she's a heretic who tries to homebrew instead of going to church
oh shit excited for the first appearance of Christopher Eccleston on the pod next week!
Abby, this is the perfect excuse to do Bruce Almighty.
Also Truman Show for the "Jim Carrey Paradise Lost" double feature
Wish you would have mentioned that Welsh God (Wod) is also voiced by the actress of Maude, adding even more to the theory that she is absolutely not conversing with an actual divine being and that it is going on in her head.
I never remember that in this context BFI stands for British Film Institute and not UNICEF'S Baby Friendly Initiative
Not to be too parasocial but this couldn’t have come at a better time. I was at the gym spiraling about some shit in one of my friendships and general loneliness while listening to this episode, and it sort of pulled me out of it and I was able to send out a text to people. So thanks for this.
lesser of two wevils
i wasn't expecting one of my all time faves to get covered in the pod but i'm extremely glad
Catholics decided on "Full personhood at conception" in the 1800s when they formally adopted the Immaculate Conception of Mary as doctrine.
The history that is wild as theologians fought against Immaculate Conception for centuries.
Hey a rape content warning would have been choice in the description 👍
Just updated the description, thanks for the heads up! Problem with recording weeks in advance is i forget what we even talked about lmao
Unrelated to the episode but I have a question for the trio - I'm working on the TV Tropes page for the podcast, are there subtitles for season's 1, 2, and 3, and is "Robbery Szn" the official spelling for season 4's subtitle?
Szn(sic)
40:33 Softness aside, I understand that nurses like crocs because they're comfortable to spend a long shift standing in, and they're easy to clean or replace if they get sprayed with a patient's various fluids.
1:23:45 Maud's angel wings aren't just "kind of Blake-like", they're a direct rip from "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun".
Catholicism doesn't have the same personal relationship with God that evangelical do, but plenty of saints and mystics have written about how horny they are for god. Especially nuns and beguines. You should read what Mechthild of Magdeburg said about Christ's side wound
It's Maudin' time!! Thank you for giving us this Devon
As in Maud Flanders? I can only presume
FUN DAY AT THE BEACH ⛱️ 😎 🔥👍
