S3E31.5: Air Doll

On this week's Bonus, it's Girls Night as Nova and Abi watch Air Doll, a movie about a blow-up doll that comes to life. I'll tell you this for free: it ain't about 9/11.

Joining us is Lily Alexandre, video essayist and fellow Nebula creator, who's videos introduced Abi to this movie!

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. They deserve to survive.

Hearing this made me want to watch this film!! This was a really interesting episode. If you liked this movie and want similar themes from a novel except intentionally trans by a trans writer and with a brighter ending, I'd really recommend 'Kimmy' by Alyson Greaves! Listening to this I was just like "oh the Kimmy vibes, the Kimmy vibes!". It's robots instead of dolls, but the 'dehumanisation & gender' theme is similarly strong.

Doll who recently read Kimmy also getting Kimmy vibes from this movie. Love that your mind went here too x. To add in an edit, if anyone does consider reading Kimmy, quite a few trigger warnings to be aware of, it's very dark but also romantic

Anyone else having this episode cut out at the 12:48 minutes left mark?

I won't be able to watch this movie anytime soon (seeing SA is too triggering for me) so I wanted to thank you for this episode because your discussion about it was amazing and very heartfelt. I was on the verge of tears from the moment of 'where is my birthday cake' and up until the end.

So not related to this specific episode but! I know it's important not to violate the Egg Prime Directive. Let them figure it out for themselves and such. But I do recommend eggs this podcast when I'm Pretty Sure they are eggs. If they are actually cis, they get a good podcast. And if they ain't, that shell won't survive y'all lol

Did anyone else immediately imagine the doll as the autopilot from Airplane?

55:35 "I met god. And he said I'm a hole" hit me like a brick

Didn’t realize this was the same director as monster. That movie wrecked me, please watch it as a bonus some time.

Agreed, absolutely stunning movie.

Great episode, great filmmaker, great guest appearance, forced to take 20hp psychic damage every time the folks almost but not quite nail the particularly Japanese things at play here. Also the konbini egg sandwiches are pretty good but the real move is French-inspired Japanese bakeries - I'm back home now but my heart yearns for bougie bakery currypan.

C
Chibigodzilla · November 12, 2024

Speaking of psychic damage, the line "*Something About Mary* is supposed to be really funny."

Probably very deliberately meaningful that her name is Nozomi, meaning “desire” or “wish”. Possibly also a deliberate choice to heighten the sense of alienation by casting a Korean actress (Bae Doona) in a movie set in a Japanese town with all Japanese actors?

N
Nah · November 10, 2024

Oh, as a woman who Japanese men use as sexual substitutes? Deliberate or not, it's there in the text and so fair game.

Oh I had forgotten that I had pirated this movie at random and it really wrecked my shit while on a transatlantic flight. I was expecting a Pinocchio romcom not The Little Match Girl meets Romeo and Juliette.

Loving these movie recommendations that I can inflict on my vanilla and unsuspecting partner. Also, as an entomologist I hate that people are like 'x fly only lives x time' No. They have a larval stage (maggots, glow-worms etc). Argh!

Man the description of the scene at 1:00:00 has me tearing up

P

I clicked on this episode having HORRIBLY misread the title. I was expecting a fun ride through the movie Air Bud, à la Cats & Dogs 2

I really should listen to the whole intro before commenting huh

Now that we're entering Heist Season, I gotta ask: are we doing Kelly's Heroes?

T
The Curious Case of Caley V · November 9, 2024

Which as we know is a film about being trans. Oddball is 100% transmasc coded

D
Daniel Berryman · November 9, 2024

Also, the line "surrounded by all of this imperfect and terrible love, with all of its horrible consequences" goes hard as all fuck, goddamn.

D
Daniel Berryman · November 9, 2024

This was really great, lots of interesting analysis I really enjoyed. Lily was an excellent guest also! (An episode on Poor Things would be pretty great, I think about it every time you all mention it.)

Thirty mins in and this is landing danger close, I do love having a memory. Think this is one to listen to in company.

A
Andrew Dunn · November 9, 2024

Well now I need them to cover Truman Show, an almost explicitly Satanist (in the Promethean sense) movie (Ok it would have made more sense to say Luciferian instead of Promethean but I figure Prometheus is well known enough. Fuck it, it's an explicitly Paradise Lostian movie)
