S3E29.5: The People's Joker

2:12 AM going back for more cool transgender art

This week, we're watching Vera Drew's seminal The People's Joker, a coming-of-age autobiographical movie about a closeted trans woman who moves to the big city (gotham) to try to make it as an SNL cast member (clown).

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. They deserve to survive.

One of the first lines of the movie is an absolute banger: (paraphrased) woke bruce Wayne has fucked everything up, where is batman

I had the opportunity to see this movie at my local film festival when it was fresh, but my mom was in town and wanted to see stuff at that festival with me. Just being a semi-closeted trans woman seeing a trans movie with my mom felt like a no-go at the time, but if I showed her this specific movie I think I would have gotten disowned that night.

I'm relistening to your ep after seeing it yesterday, anyone who's close to London, the Prince Charles Cinema, which is objectively the best indie cinema in London, are showing it three more times in March, go see it!

It's really funny to me that this movie has closeted gay Batman, because when I watched The Batman for the first time, all I could see was a massive Trans Fem egg, performing masculinity so hard you could feel the pain radiating off the screen.

Naturally, the thing I latched onto was the whole "energy to create more art bit," sigh, paraphrased from memory. At times like this, I try to remember the adage, "It's more important that the work exist than for it be any good." In other words, finish that draft and then worry if it is any good, existing being the single most important part. I had a teacher who used to say, "Finish the shit draft. That's what it's there for, to be shit," paraphrased from 30ish year old memory.

H
HAUNTER · October 13, 2024

The “I’ve never been happy” line I felt like was referencing the “I’ve never been happier” meme (the vibe of which is I think how a lot of cis people unconsciously view trans people)

I think when you have people look at something like Parasite or Squid Game and so willfully ignore the thinnest veneer of metaphor to see what they want, it's nice for a movie to look at the camera and say: "it's about this. Fuck you"

The “singing over the line ‘I’m a midnight toker’ hits hard cuz my dad used to sing me “The Boxer” all the time and I didn’t know the line is “the whores on 7th avenue” until my 20s cuz he always sang “the girls” over it.

I have found this film and plan to watch it asap. intensely relate to both the feelings of unpersonhood even post transition (I'm coming up on a decade this year!) and many other things. I fear I too am in this movie. relatedly: I have definitely legally obtained versions of the 2nd and 3rd Diabolik films that I think have subtitles? I haven't watched them yet but It's Out There if you are willing to use extremely legal means.

I saw this in a packed theater of trans people shortly after I came out to myself but was still closeted to the rest of the world and I cried my eyes out after. It vocalized so much of my childhood that I didn't know how to express. I just recently came out to my mom and almost want to send her this to watch and understand what I went through, but, uhhhhh. No. That's not a good idea! I Saw the TV Glow also had an impact on me, but not nearly to the extent that this movie has. Chock another one up for team People's Joker girlies

SNL was never the peak of comedy, but it was the show you watched when you first got to stay up as late as you wanted on a Saturday Night and you laughed a bunch because you were tired enough that a five minute skit that was 4 minutes too long was really funny to you.

I am having some uhh rumblings given these last two films. I am generally pretty lost in terms of self-actualization and feeling confident in who I am…Some of the details that I have connected to when hearing these two movies have lit up old memories I forgot I had. I remember fixating on the idea that my mother had a later miscarriage right before being pregnant with me, and that if I were a girl, they would have named me Alice. When my depression felt the worst in high school I would imagine Alice being born instead so that I could stop existing. There’s obviously a LOT more (including mostly being interested in lesbian porn when I first found masturbating) but none of this quite feels like a massive alignment towards a new understanding. It feels more like “huh…wonder what this is about?” What should I like do about this? I am in a seven year relationship with someone and even though I think they would take it well I feel so scared of engaging with these feelings. It also might just be that I feel lacking in self-understanding, and I really admire the hosts and trans people I know for their strong sense of self, and so I think to myself well THEY certainly know who they are—why not try what they did?

P
Public Universal Foe · October 11, 2024

Do you think it will be easier to engage with these feelings in a year? Do you think it will matter to your partner if it's been 8 years instead of 7? It's not going away, might as well make it sooner and not later

The January Storm · October 11, 2024

As someone from inside the corporate podcasting industry there's a sort of dual crisis: a metrics crisis and an extraction crisis. The metrics crisis is that all of the metrics are terrible and how they're calculated and recorded change constantly and it's only getting worse. The trend right now is that most podcasts with a few exceptions (like the one I work on weirdly enough) are hemorrhaging downloads and it's not really clear why. This has spooked the ad people and they're pulling back and that's hurting a lot of people but all of that would be ok except the larger problem with corporate podcasts it that all of the ad money is being pumped into the hideously unprofitable tech-media companies which don't make any money, don't know how to make any money, and probably structurally can't make any money. So all of the ad money flows up to these corporate jackasses and since that's the main revenue stream for the shows and the podcasters don't control it, you have to take the scraps they give or you the ones you're able to claw out of them with a union. Meanwhile that money either gets spent on supporting the other sectors of the company that can't make any money, buying your CEO a new yacht, or gets spent on a $100 million celebrity podcast that no one will listen to like the fucking Megan Merkle one which she didn't even fucking do, her producers had to do the interviews themselves and then she recorded the interviewer's lines later to dub over to make it seem like she did it. So people with profitable shows are just getting screwed as management panics over the Adpocalypse and fires everyone. Meanwhile the company literally owns your name which makes it extremely difficult for anyone who's not already huge to go independent even if you could get out of the non-compete clauses. The corporate ghouls, desperate for revenue to cover for the fact that they don't know how to make any money, are effectively running an entire extremely profitable industry into the ground in order to divert the profits into their pockets, it's all just unbelievably grim. Now realizing this is an entire wall of text lol but someone has to know before they get us all.

Stormsdream · October 13, 2024

Way back in the before times, I had a podcast. Subject matter is way to embarrassing to mention here and also beside the point. Since the podcast was hosted on my website via RSS, which should tell you something about how long ago this was, I had all the raw numbers, and one episode was being downloaded over and over again to a single IP address. I found this bizarre. I did a reverse lookup of the IP and was able to determine it was somewhere in China . . . sooo, a bot was doing some kind of constantly download loop, I figured. This freaked me out because I was paying for the bandwidth myself. I tried to block the IP and accidentally blocked my entire website. My web host turned off my "block IP" function after that. So yeah, I can imagine metrics being hard to pin down while also being very wonky because there are probably tons of bots junking the stats.

Seeing this in a packed house at the Music Box in Chicago was an all time great theatrical experience. Vera Drew was there and her opening statement before film was just an acapella rendition of a Pink Floyd song. I recommend going through her instagram and seeing all the outfits she wore during the tour. At my showing she had a fur pillbox hat, eyeball earrings, gold fishnet top, and crocs.
