S3E17.5: Romy and Michele's High School Reunion
Okay okay okay, how about a fun one. I know the Card Counter and To The Bone were heavy, and you've all been so good. With the state of the world as it is, maybe we just need to watch a 1997 comedy about two best friends who want to impress their small-town high school.

Devon's story about the tractor reminds me of the fact that I turned up to prom in a series 2 Land Rover wearing an all black suit with a green tie
Tucson Arizona mentioned
Utterly flashbanged by the phrase “Private school white Obama”
I’m really curious how Devon’s time as a teacher has impacted their perspective on high school (or secondary school or whatever). Like do they see the same patterns happening, do they have a chance to change kids’ perspective on this stuff…? I thought this was really interesting as someone who just graduated high school
...And then I made my whole polycule watch this with me.
Finally watched it. My wife crushed on Vogue editor lady because suit, I crushed on Romy because eyes voice and hair, and we both crushed on Janeane Garofalo because Also, I don't think the hosts pointed out how homoerotic the mechanics were when they listened in on the "sex". They were all rubbing each other, and the one guy was sucking on a cigar that was pointing straight out of the center of his mouth.
A stage musical is very much in development!
I will never be brave or cool enough, and I *am* stupid.
When Romy and Michele explode back into the reunion in their Fantastic homemade dresses I felt awed. WOW. I never expected a 90's comedy to be this moving. If I can ever embody the radiant colours of the world and walk like they do, that'd do just fine.
Re: the Mexican food line early in the movie at the nightclub: every now and then, the hosts will call out something they think is potentially problematic and it's like... nah. It's ok. They live in southern California. Mexican food is extremely common.
Amazing. I love learning about culture
If girls=colorful and masculinity=black and white, what does this say about Dune Part 2(2024)
I'm feeling compelled to tell November about the existence of Dalia Mikneviciute, a Pilates trainer who once appeared on Channel 4 wearing high heels in the gym... https://dalia-fitnesscoach.eu/about-dalia/
"your leitmotif including an oboe means you're a dipshit." Thinking of Jubal Early from Firefly and... you're not completely wrong, but still a menacing dipshit
Knowing nothing about British school, Abi's description of prom sounds like she went to fucking Honnoji Academy
You did a high school reunion movie and it wasn't Grosse Pointe Blank? I'm not cross with you, I'm just very disappointed!
Devon keeping it real for the trans masc/non binary folks, we appreciate you king 👑
if you lot were to do another serious bonus - i’d recommend paul schrader’s mishima: a life in four chapters there’s many themes of masculinity, queerness, art and perhaps even a little transgenderness about it - the score and cinematography is phenomenal, too
Please review Titane 🙏 it’s very trans and very French and a stripper has sex with a car
hey -- just dipped in for a few weeks to play catch up on the bonus feed. keep up the good work. thanks.
When Nova started talking about dumping wolf piss in a car's air vents I probably laughed harder than any other patron. I had a friend that actually did something like that She used doe in heat though. She had a terrible boss who constantly bulled her. So as act of defiance she put the doe in heat the air vents of the boss's Mercedes.
When I was doing feminizing vocal therapy my therapist asked for my goals and I sent her the clip of Janeane Garofolo pre-emptively chewing out the cowboy for fucking with her
I have too much to say about this but I'm gonna try and keep it short. This movie came out when I was 10 and I watched it too many times over the years (it was a sleepover fave.) Watching it as a deeply closeted trans masc going through feminizing puberty in a small town, it definitely made an impact vis-a-vis all the misogyny you mention, but I also really remember it being one of the few pieces of media from that era that made me think "if I have to grow up and become a woman, maybe it won't be all bad." because of the relationship between R+M and how they lived lives they enjoyed. Anyways thank god I don't have to be a woman and live a life I enjoy even more because of that, but listening to y'all talk about it makes me see the parallels between their story and the lives of me and my friends now, in a big city being gay and trans as hell. Anyways loved the ep and special thanks to Devon, appreciate you lookin' out for us fellas.
My brother also arrived in a tractor for his prom in our small town West Country secondary school.
If you're looking for movies, might I humbly suggest Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant? I'm not sure it has a ton to say ABOUT masculinity or femininity, but I find the ways in which it has aged poorly in terms of gender interesting and oddly endearing.
Just in case this is a better way than DMing through Patreon, I wanted to throw out the movie Bound as a very explicitly lesbian '90s robbery movie that's also a neo-noir and an erotic thriller directed by the Wachowski Sisters. I don't think it's ever been very high profile but it's so good. My queer friends and I just rediscovered and we were electric watching it.
I understand why the hosts keep talking about it this way and yes LA is a much much bigger city but Tuscon is not a small town, it's a city of 500,000 people, it's bigger than Liverpool.
Oh God. I went to high school in Tucson and moved elsewhere as an adult. I'm gonna get a chance to do this movie, but super gay and trans (surprising anyone who didn't know that surprise, the nerdy and depressed teenage 'boy' is now a married woman and a shrink). I've still got a few years at least.
Jumping in with a bit of 90s pop-culture pedantry: They don't get rejected from speed dating for being too old, but rather from Singled Out, an MTV dating gameshow, hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy. The joke (which I remember hitting pretty well at the time) is more in it being a silly choice than in the rejection.
You don't really get as many school reunion stories much anymore. I suppose it takes the tension out of the story when everyone can look up ahead of time who got married, became a rich inventor, transed their gender, or had kids.
Love the episode, shocked this movie isn't textually gay. Have yall thought about doing Gross Pointe Blank? Great action romcom also about a school reuiniom. Could be a fun mix for the show
Seconding this. Would be an excellent KJB pick.
The cigarette that you kill instantly
Going to buy my cute transmasc BF a cowboy hat based on the suggestion in this episode. He will look so good. Thanks guys!
Beware the power he'll gain. With that hat he might just become unstoppable.
This movie, The Craft, Rocky Horror, Cry-Baby, and Nightmare on Elm Street are the reason why I am who I am today. I saw all of them a lot between the ages of 4 and 7, that kind of shit wires your brain in a really specific way.
"Spike discworld" i see you November.
Good news, Drag Icons Trixie Mattel and Katya did a stage adaptation of this movie
Found the 'live well for you' etc stuff very helpful to hear as I hit big anniversary school reunion season and no idea what kind of impression of myself to lay down in front of all the highly successful awful peopl!)e!
I went to Google Janeane Garofolo in this movie and eventually had to go to the movie’s Wikipedia page. I could not have guessed the correct spelling of her name if I tried for a million years
So I am very aware there is an F at the end yes Devon. Also it's said Mayzerf...no I will not just spell it that way. XD
Fully fucking lost it at "Living well is too hard; I'm gonna put wolf piss in the air vents of your car."
My mum had this on tape and watched it often. Gotta tell ya a movie about two women who suck was a very formative feature of my childhood
While you probably couldn't afford a beachfront 1-bedroom in Venice Beach on one salary, average LA rent was 25% of what it is today, which, after accounting for inflation, is about half of what it currently is. Venice Beach was gentrifying by the 90s, but it wasn't quite the completely unaffordable tourist and tech circus it is today. If we account for the film probably having been written a few years before that, it isn't entirely unthinkable. Just implausible.
Abigail can’t tell the difference between Elaine Hendrix and Bridgette Wilson, yet claims to love blonde American women… interesting.
My absolute adoration for Janine Garofolo started with this movie. She was part of the original incarnation of The Majority Report with Sam Seder back when Air America was around and yeah, her career never recovered. She's never, ever been bad in anything.
Silly fun movie suggestion to have in the chamber, underrated 2001 masterpiece Josie and the Pussycats. It's so good and kind of like if they made a better Wayne's World with and for girls. Spoiler alert: they had no permission for almost all the product placement, a film twenty years ahead of its time
Seconding Josie!!
I'd like to request 2001's Rachael Leigh Cook epic 'Josie and the Pussycats' for the next silly one. It also features Alan Cumming!
lighting a candle every day until they review Bottoms
Not for nothing, but I really Need November to be More specific about this Wolf Perfume for reasons
God damn it I know who invented post-its
November out there with the Spike reference from Discworld like I'm *not* gonna have to pause the podcast now to curse out Moist von Lipwig for being married to the hottest woman in the whole series
Please, please do How to Steal a Million when you do the Season of Heists!
I saw that movie on TV when I was in high school and the bi panic that Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn gave me... 1999 The Mummy levels.
I first saw this film back in lockdown after having discovered it from Trixie and Katya - they did a stage musical drag version with Peaches Christ back in 2018 and it was such a Covid comfort film. Loved your commentary on it, especially since I’d completely forgotten about it in the four years and have transitioned in the meantime, it added a nice perspective to it I didn’t see before
Janeane Garofalo love to see love to say
I was raised on this movie.
Oh next silly one with Janeane Garofalo: Wet Hot American Summer
One day I hope to lay claim to a simple lie that will never backfire on me like inventing the post-it note
i started a post (that got the qrts flying)
