Deep Watch Crossbows
I start the shift in the workshop. Inspection of men and mechanisms: taut strings, clean triggers, each bolt heavy and calibrated. We ascend to the parapet, the watch is set without a sound. Two light strips to gauge the tunnel currents, three marks carved into the stone for distances. I assign sectors with a hand gesture: left, center, right. No one improvises here; a flaw in the rhythm is paid for with blood.
When the vanguard appears in the gallery, three sharp commands: front rank, fire; second, load; relief, ready. The first volley breaks their push, the second rips shields away, the third seeks the command. I keep the tempo with my fingers on the stone: load, aim, release. We don't want heroes; we buy time. If the enemy is delayed, the hold breathes until the relief shift.
When finished, I go down with the squad. We count what's recovered: intact bolts, frayed strings, splintered pavises. The report is written in figures, not flourishes. Our work is calculation and efficiency. Tomorrow, if they ask, the answer is simple: we held the line. The gate held.
----
No queremos héroes; compramos tiempo.
