The Iron Legion

The recruit arrived with his family mask—the face of Hadrik Highbridge—wrapped in burlap. In the Zralkûrn corridor the line was already formed.
“Who takes the center?” he asked.
The veteran glanced toward the mouth of the tunnel: cohort banners, none bearing the royal device.
“See for yourself,” he said. “We do. Put the mask on and close up.”

The horn called: close, hold, push. Shields touched, the line stepped one flagstone forward, then sealed again.
“Remember why this weighs,” the veteran added. “We’re the ones who won the surface—opened routes and held bridges. And in the War of the Roots, when the elves shattered the front, we fell and went back below. That defeat is ours; that’s why no one shines here. Our job is to pin the enemy so the rest can maneuver.”

The recruit breathed behind Hadrik’s metal and looked left and right. The line was still there.
“If they ask tomorrow…?”
“They’ll say enough,” the veteran finished: “The Legion was at the center.”
