Between Furrow and Shield: Limitanei

A limitanei is a frontier soldier. He lives by the road, works his plot, and when the horn sounds he lifts the spear. He guards fords, mileposts, and towers; he’s paid in land and duty. No parade, no glory—just keeping the route open and the border closed.

Limitanei · Resting
The quiet half of the job: spears grounded, oval shields leaned, helmets off. A sentry watches the road while a comrade tightens straps and the signifer checks the staff. Camp, mend, keep an eye on the dust—readiness without noise.

Limitanei · In Combat
The dust arrives. “Spears down!” Short step, shield wall, controlled shove. First rank stops the push; second rank relieves and casts the verutum. Two steps forward if they break, one back to the marker if they press. The frontier isn’t won—it’s kept.

Both kits are designed to combine—heads, arms, and shields cross-fit—so you can tell the full story of the border guard: the watch and the clash.
