Roll The Dice... An adventure left entirely to chance [TRIAL RUN] [PART 1]
Afternoon beloved Patreons. Here’s something I think you might really like.
I've often said that the beauty of adventure is not knowing where you're about to go or what's going to happen along the way. Well, today I let a dice decide everything. Starting in the middle of nowhere, I first roll to see which direction I travel initially, and continue to roll the dice at every road or footpath junction that follows. Even human interactions and visits to shops, pubs churches and anything else that raises a question will be put to the dice. The result is a completely unique adventure that could slot in anywhere on the scale of incredible to horrendous. What ever happens in the end will have been both meant to be, and have a trillion to one chance of happening.
This is the trial run for what could be a much bigger grander adventure. I work out a few rules along the way but feel free to comment with your suggestions.
Part 2 will be with you in two weeks (27th October)
**Good subtitles available**

Such a beautiful village to start from. I immediately wanted to move there but rightmove says there is nothing for sale... I think I would have just lain on the grass in front of the church for an hour & then gone up the road to the pub.
Amazing, something to watch while Jet Lag is out of season
I was laughing so hard when the dice kept forcing you to the farm...and forced you back to your starting point. Great stuff!
What about a challenge where you catch bus after bus getting off at random stops and caching the next bus that comes and see how far you go. Could even have a randomised timer or something and when it goes off you have to get off at the next stop
that's a great idea Zoe!!
You need to join up with Jet Lag: The Game! This idea is so up their street
i'll check them out!
Really cool Tom!! You could make it a rule that you cannot take the same road or footpath more than once? In other words if you end up at a junction you've already been (say two options in front of you, for an easier example), you can only go the way you've not been yet (and not roll the dice). If 3 options : you roll the dice only for the two options you've not yet tried. Hope that makes sense. Looking forward the next bit!
yeah i think this is the way to go!
I think this format would suit a how not to travel Europe style adventure. Pick your country 1-6, have 3 desirable, 3 less so. Then the dice decides how to get there. If by bus or train for example, how many stops you take into that country before getting off. Then what you eat, where you stay, what you get up to. It could have comedic repercussions like having to eat clotted cream with chutney and frozen peas. Admittedly, this is a little biased as I did something similar to this 20 years ago inter-railing through Europe and to see you relive it vicariously would be amazing. My first roll took me to Italy, which was actually a less desirable option because I had been there before, but did take me to the absolutely stunning Cinqueterre between Genoa and Pisa. The first friend I met was an older guy from Brazil and we spent the day in this beautiful and frankly romantic setting but culminated in getting woken up by him at 5 in the morning in our hostel room asking if he could kiss my penis, he had no clothes on and when rebuffed I could see his shoulder going in the bed. Probably not selling this to you now but this really gave me a strong lesson in understanding what it must be like to be a solo female traveller, how to feel resolute in a dodgy situation and learning to read peoples intentions a bit better. Cinqueterre and the hostel we incredible and the rollercoaster start to the trip and added danger gave a real pep to it and a now a funny story. I saw 9 countries and had an incredible time on that trip, the dice was a big part of that, plus the book that had inspired it - The Diceman by Lucius Rhinehart. A key component you seem to have already picked up on is not to have only safe options, a couple options should be things you may not feel like doing, it really makes it exciting an opens doors you may not be expecting. Definitely one to pursue and many scenarios it can play out in
Mate that is absolutely hilarious. Mad that you're now telling that story on this platform, all thanks to that dice. so true too. this sort of thing is built for me and Greg!
Maybe you could have custom dice for directions or coin for 50/50 decisions.
true, a coin would have sufficed most of the time but at least the dice can cater for all scenarios
How about if you encounter a farmer & he chases you then you've got to roll 🎲 to decide if you're allowed to run away from him or not 🤣🤣🤣
haha that is such a good idea, but quite terrifying.
Lots of us with ideas - would this work better in an urban environment? Roll dice for left or right then roll dice on how many block to walk before rolling again. No re- treading over streets already visited. Excited to see the improvements you devise.
yeah i think an urban version of this has to be trialed. lots of interactions and shops etc!
OS maps is better if you're going to refer to your phone for public rights of way. AllTrails uses OpenstreetMap for it's basemap and that means because it's open source, people can remove footpaths from it or it's just not been mapped yet. Regardless, when comparing the Ordnance Survey map to OpenStreetMap for that footpath through the farm in Lullington, the OpenStreetMap path stops where you saw it in that field on AllTrails, but on Ordnance Survey it continues diagonally across the field, past Birchington House and back onto the roads towards Netherseal. If you wanted a digital free adventure, that path shows on both the 1:25 and 1:50 scale mapping, a 1:50 landranger map covers 40km2 so 1 or 2 of those would probably cover you for an adventure like this!
thanks mate. all will be revealed in part 2. put it this way, i won't be using alltrails again.
Loved the video, but the constant dice rolling was a little too repetitive. I was thinking every 5 minutes you roll the dice and decide which way assuming there are roads in your vicinity to change direction. I would also stay on tarmac or actual footpath so you don't need to go in fields. Just a suggestion
i agree it was repetitive and won't happen again - wait for part 2 to see the twist
If it were me I would probably stick to established tracks and tarmac as there is far less chance of ending up going round in circles through fields.
that is definitely my aim - wait for part 2 to see the twist
Hey Tom I'm not sure if you've heard of it but a show came out here in the US about a decade ago where a guy did this in one of the episodes but instead of dice it was a magic 8 ball controlling all his decisions. It's called Review (season 1 episode 8) if you wanna give it a watch! It's all scripted of course but still funny
oh nice! that could be really interesting..
I watched. Most anything you do is entertaining, but had a thought. I wonder if you only took a roll at specific intervals. Like roll to get started, but then go in whatever direction for 10 or 15 minutes. Have an interval timer set, then the next choice point after the alarm goes off you do a roll. Because in those places where it's happening every few minutes, I wondered at those times if it allowed you space to reflect and explore and just be. But maybe you aren't concerned about that. I also like the idea of removing a choice if you've already done it or it's going to send you back to a place you've been.
This would be sick
This is funny as my uncle is Russel harris from the diceman! I will tell him to watch this.
You're kidding! i just watched their trailer a minute ago. What a small world. tell him great idea haha
Don’t know if it’s been said already but I don’t think a map would be bad, even if you knew the area, paths and roads, the dice still makes the decision for you, right? And with a map at least you can see wether or not a path is a dead end before you take it
That's true. A physical map might work.
I love the concept and I enjoyed the video, but I think the dice rolls were a little bit too frequent. It takes away the impact of a roll when you're gonna roll again 100 metres later. Just my two cents :)
Completely agree Marcus - wait for part 2 to see the twist
Enjoyed the video mate but did find the constant dice rolling made it flow a little worse than usual. Not sure how that could be improved - perhaps only using the dice for larger decisions like interactions, what to eat, where to sleep and other non-route related things? You could also add a rule to prevent you from taking the same path more than once, just to make things more interesting!
I agree I did find it a little tedious compared to other formats. Still love all the content but was finding it a bit annoying at times
Couldn’t help chuckling watching you shaking the dice in your hand😂let’s hope those clips don’t get taken out of context…
looking forward to seeing some creative edits...
We played a similar game on our summer trip. Not walking, just how we spend the day. But it was funnier with a few more people and random questions for the dice. To be also fair, it escalated very quickly (we asked the dice if we should buy breakfast or a box of Eristoff ice things) but it was a very fun day. So maybe for another trip, take a 2nd person with you. Like Uncle Ed,...
I like it. There really is so much potential. Ed would make a great addition haha.
Love the dice idea. Rather than 1-3 and 4-6 could you decide direction by saying odd or even instead. It’s more easily recognisable. Works both ways though.
yes much better thanks Nick!
Given the fact I got a tatoo of ''Fate goes ever as she shall'' in old english (ive always been fascinated by chance/randomness) I approve of this idea lol
It was fate that you should watch this video
Now I have the big dilemma whether to get straight into the Dice journey or continue with watching you try locate the Amish folk in the States 😂 This sounds fantastic though. I think some fancy dress might go down well! Possibly Dungeons and Dragons related!!
Roll a dice to decide! haha, good ideas Bruce!
Thank you for keeping this great content so affordable! Especially for a uni student like me
I'm glad you think so Isaac, cheers
Hey Tom, there's a mathematical concept analogous to what you're doing which is called a random walk. A key concept in a random walk is that the distance you travel is proportional to the square root of the number of decisions you make. e.g. if you do 1000 dice rolls you should expect to only be on average 30 decisions away! I think you should disallow loops, or bound yourself to a specific direction in order to make sure you actually make progress. For example, maybe allow rolls for north and east but not west and south. This way there's still rolls to be made but forcing you towards a path that does not meander. Have a think on it.
Some interesting points Kevin thanks!
If it’s a shitty decision, it’s a shitty decision. Just be careful near safari parks mate…
hahaha, it's up to the dice...
My thoughts would be an Ordnance Survey map so you don't end up down dead ends. And a no circle rule so you don't go round and round.
agreed Paul - wait for the twist in part 2!
Could it be that Tom has had an encounter with... Dr Chance? Three Bean Salad x GeoWizard was not on my bingo card for this year.
This is a good opportunity for me to say what it looks like when you roll dice off-frame. But instead I'm just gonna say this was a great idea! Serious suggestion: Perhaps if you end up in a loop, you could forego rolling on junctions you've already visited, and just take them straight. Or remove the direction that you've already taken from the roll outcomes? Just spitballing.
Yes, this was going to be my suggestion.
This is 100% my jam. When I was a kid my dad and I would drive around exploring our very rural surroundings, me flipping a coin every time we reached an intersection or a turn-off. We ended up in some very interesting places, and the feeling of not knowing what’s next can’t be beat. So excited to watch this!
no way! no wonder you enjoyed. There'l be more of this to come!
Love that you’re doing this. I’ll watch later. Buzzing.
Cheers Ash!
I think this type of adventure has really great potential, but maybe you can expand it a bit more. Not just dice, but maybe also chance cards that you have to pull after every x amount of dice rolls or ever x amount of miles. Like a chance card could be: "walk the next mile in as straight as a line you can", or "ask a stranger for directions to the nearest village in an american accent" or you can have an x amount of money to your disposal and a chance card could be "the next piece of food you buy is free" And you could make them yourselfs, or you can have verity do it or us the viewers.
Great idea
This is exciting! I used to love the Dicemen when I was a kid.
There's a memory. What a show that was
Always look forward to the uploads 🔥👏
Thanks man hope you enjoyed
This sounds so good, Tom! Can’t wait to watch it tonight 👍
hope you enjoyed Ttom
Really cool insight into the inner workings of your brain when having ideas! Thanks for sharing, Tom!
Glad you found it interesting Ollie
Something to look forward to after work :) sounds like a fun idea.
Hope you enjoyed!
Right, that proves it. You watch Jet lag don’t you. Mate, please get yourself on that show as a guest.
Never heard of it! Any good?
This sounds like fun! Can't wait to watch it later ☺️
Cheers Matt!
Have you ever tried Toughest Viking?
I have not, what is that?
What a pleasant surprise this is! Will watch later, thank you!
Hope you enjoyed Leanne!
