Urban exploration in Birmingham: Nuclear bunker shafts, drug den underpasses and spooky catacombs...
Morning Patreons!
**GOOD SUBTITLES AVAILABLE**
Last week my adventurous heart yearned for a healthy slice of Urban exploration, so I headed into one of the best places in the country for it; Birmingham. Today though, rather than aim for one or two specific spots I decided to venture right through the city, from bottom to top, with a view to check out a number of spots that I'd been meaning to check out for a while. Some of them were going to be easy to enter, others were going to be almost impossible, and others I would accidentally discover along the way.
The overarching theme to the whole day would be the absolutely fascinating but unattainable Anchor nuclear bunker system. These cold war bunkers and their surrounding tunnels stretch for miles beneath the city centre and are basically the holy grail of urban exploration. Getting into them alone would be highly improbable and dangerous, but that's okay because unbeknown to your average brummie, their ventilation shafts and access points are dressed in clever disguises and hidden in plain sight across the city, and that alone is fascinating enough to keep this simple little man happy.
Finally, no day out with GeoWizard would be complete without a mini mission of some sort, and what was supposed to be a fairly simple crossing from one massive spooky graveyard to another, turned into an almighty palaver and a stern telling off...

Only just joined so I'm late to the party. But about 5 or 10 years after the tunnel work was done, (they told the public at the time they were building an underground railway line), my Dad started an architecture job for the government at the now abandoned Five Ways House. The kind of job that despite having to sign the Official Secrets Act I don't think he worked on anything too exciting. Anyhows he always said there was a blocked off doorway in the Edmund Street kind of area (so not too far from BT Tower) that used to lead down to some underground government stuff. No idea if it was connected to the tunnels or something different. I eventually did find the large door, a very none descript that people walk past without looking. But we are talking 25 years ago and I can't find it on Google Street view, my memory is awful and my Dad passed away away 15 years ago. Maybe the door is long gone or at least now behind a wall somewhere. I need to head back sometime and try and relocate it.
How am I supposed to sleep when I don’t know where the light was coming from!?!
When I see all these locked gates I can't help but wonder where the keys for them actually exist, if anyone even knows anymore.
Just ask a guy with the "key to the city" 😁
Hi tom, i have recently just joined the membership team on here after being a avid subscriber on YT. I, myself am from Walsall, so i enjoy your odd Walsall videos from time to time ;) Myself and my partner really enjoy watching your videos, they really inspire us. Random fact......i climbed my first mountain (technically a hill) in Ambleside called Wensfell. On the way back down, i climbed (gracefully) on my backside (as i couldnt walk down it) and my partner played "Main Theme" from your Album "16-Bit Adventure" as i gracefully came down :) you're the best!
I was part of the group that skated the Forums steps in the late 90's, that photo could well have been of us. Tbh, I would stay well away from some of those darker corners of Brum. To paraphrase Gandalf: "There are older and fouler things than Smack Heads, in the deep places of the Birmingham".
As a Tolkien enthusiast I was happy to see that his family members are still remembered in Birmingham. He and his family used to live near the Sarehole mill and he has mentioned the place many times in his letters and memoirs. Definitely a place I want to see if I ever come to Birmingham. I actually visited J.R.R. Tolkien's and Edith Tolkien's grave in Oxford in 2015.
Love the video tom! You should do a few patron exclusives where you visit some old places from crazy stories you had in your youth ages or even recently!
Wow it's like he did exactly what you asked for...
Even if you don’t bring gloves that’s ok but definitely have some alcohol hand gel with you a quick way to clean your hands and any cut you could get quick way to clean it
Sensible! cheers James
You NEED to get down into those nuclear tunnels or atleast get closer to them ☢️
I'd love to. Maybe I can convince Ben to investigate with me...
Hi Tom, I actually work in the bar that you snuck past by the railway tracks in the Jewellery Quarter (Passing Fancies)! Me and my co-worker Charlie actually bonded over our love for your videos! Next time pop in and you'll get a non-alc on me!
No way! I'll have to drop in next time I'm there haha
Death, taxes and Tom needing to do a shit 💩 😂
It must be that time of day..
Tom "Didn't Expect People Looking Through Windows" Davies. Brilliant as always ;)
Witchcraft! Haha cheers Sam.
so, did you get a ticket for your car?
I didn't thankfully :)
Gotta hand it to these graffiti kids man, some of the artwork on the walls is so impressive 🔥
Didn't even notice that!
I saw the YT members only suggestion on my feed, so came here to watch it! I love your underground/urbex stuff almost as much as the straight line and no roads missions. Have you ever considered an underground urban crossing only mission?
Thanks Jeff! I've definitely considered utilizing as many tunnels as possible. The Paris catacombs could be the one!
cheers tom. out of interest did you ever replace your taz hat?
all will soon be revealed...
Anchor is more hardened comms rather than a bunker for government. If you want a Regional Seat Government RSG bunker then there is one at Drakelow Kiddy and also at Chester plus more around the UK
Cheers Mark - you're right that was slightly incorrect. Drakelow seems insane!
Defo need a hi vis 😂
Definitely haha. Would've confused the angry bloke though!
You should do an urban exploration of dudley alot of things to look at ik theres an abandoned leisure centre👍
Sounds good! I'll stick it on my list.
The best way to start a Monday 🔥
Cheers mate!
I know you don't parttake anymore Tom, but I'm sure you can still appreciate my happiness after sitting down with a coffee and a spliff to see you had just uploaded this.
Haha yes sir 🫡😎
Now here's a notification I don't need asking twice to click on
Appreciate it Bob!
Just joined the membership earlier today! So awesome to get all of this exclusive content! Cheers Tom!
Thanks Dan appreciate the support!
Yes mate! I live in Brum and would love to do some of this shit but I am clearly a lot more afraid of getting nicked than you are 😂
If you're not breaking in or refusing to leave you're alright!
Looking forward to watching this later this evening, thank you!
Cheers Leanne, hope you enjoyed
So happy to see the notification. Got to grab a good brew to watch this one
