Oddcast October 2026
Apologies for this being a rather worn-down Oddcast at times, but it is what it is because things are how they are.
https://youtu.be/SGYTRW_DZZ4
I think I’ll probably have to take some longer breaks between uploading videos. Carrying on as I have been isn't really doing me or you any favours. Perhaps making two videos a month would be a more sensible target, we'll see.
Have a good week (or two). Take care.

Mat, sorry I'm late responding to your Oddcast, but like yourself, I'm finding life difficult at the moment. I understand your feelings re. the world at the moment, and though I would really miss your output, know its finding yourself that's important, not what others think you should do/be. I have to say that you gave me quite a laugh with the Dyson headphones 🎧 and lifted my mood considerably. I moved to the isle of Skye, and enjoy peaceful walks with my dog. The air is cleaner, very little noise. There are negatives of course, but the positives far outway them. Take care, and know that we support you whatever you decide is best for you.
Regarding the bloke moaning about projector videos, here's some advice for him - simply don't watch them! I never understand people moaning about what people put out on the internet, just watch what you like and don't watch what you don't like. Works for me.
Take a well earned break Mat. Have some quality time for yourself and see if you can "feel the love" again for your videos as an American would say. We're happy to wait. Do videos when and if you feel like it, when they feel a pleasure rather than a chore. If you're still wanting to retire after that, well then thanks for all the hours of enjoyment you've given to us (and thank you for NOT being like all the other youtubers these days!) I'm 51, I've fallen out of love with my business that I've being doing for 14 years (online collectables) and I've had a break and worked a quarter of the amount of time that I used to (for a quarter of my previous income, admittedly) and I've now got to the point where I'm becoming bored and I'm starting to enjoy my work again. I won't let it consume me though like I did, sometimes the time is more valuable than the money.
I still love finding cool tech that excites me, but there’s very little of it about and when I do find something, I seem to be the only person who is that interested in it. But yes taking longer between videos will help in a number of ways.
From a fellow youtuber, I enjoy every video you make. Negative comments are from those who probably dont make videos and dont understand how difficult it is to constantly produce fresh content. Your videos are always a welcome watch. And i do enjoy the variety of topics you cover. Cheers.
Mat's tat are some of my favourite videos personally
I love the Mat's tat videos! You never know what you're going to get and seeing just how bad some of the products are always makes me laugh.
well, I like your videos. I watch whatever comes out, and I enjoy them. if you want to stop, stop. if you carry on, I'll watch them, they make me feel better. I don't have to think about the horrible world outside when my grumpy mate is talking about gadgets.
Techmoan, just keep doing what your doing, your ok. Ignore the miserable xxxxheads, lets face it their lousy attitude is all they have. DLTBGYD
I really like all your videos, ive probably watched every one, I don't really care what the video is about, but you make it super interesting as you do a full and exhaustive research into the subject and it shines through brilliantly, keep up the great content at your own pace. 👍
Meow!
I hope you posted this at 4am.
guess I'm late... great stuff! Everyone can have an opinion. That does not mean it matters
I am same age as you and just had to have open heart surgery and it really does make you evaluate what is important in life. I am sure here we all love your videos but do what makes you happy has to be the right thing.
I really miss the videos starting with you being ”surprised” that the recording started.
I got some Dyson Zones last year from Brand Alley of all places. I'd just bought some Air pods Max which I use all the time, I didn't need them but after some gift card promo it came to I think £70. They're still in their shipping box. Must give them a try at some point.
Find a good work life balance. Ignore the trolls. Life's too short. I find all your videos and your delivery style great. I'm of a similar age and find it best not to engage with negativity.
I don’t even connect my tv to internet they are always slow. Apple TV is always better
Hi Mat, just wanted to post a positive comment, as I've been a viewer for probably 12 years now. I started watching your Dash Cam review videos but kept watching even when the product you featured was something I was never going to buy as I loved your presentation and dry humour. Personally, I love projectors despite never owning or having the intention to buy one. I also live in a house nearly identical to the internal layout of your house. So know all about the lack of space! Wish you all the best. Cheers, Paul.
I've been a subscriber for about fifteen years, Patron for about ten, with name-in-the-credits upgrade about six years ago. I've sat in hospital beds with your videos for company, and we were all there with you with your health stuff last year. Please keep at it, and know the vast majority of us are decent people! I went to the Isle of Skye last year, and whilst a respite from the 30 degree heat further south (it was 17 degrees there), I knew it probably wouldn't be much fun in December. Mind you, if Hogmanay is your thing... which I know it isn't. There was a similar museum in Strathpeffer, where we stayed, sadly closed the day we had to ourselves in the town (organised coach trip!) The views thing. I always quickly open a new video on Patreon, then send it to YouTube, so it's in my history to watch later. Guess this now counts as a "view" before I've actually properly viewed it?
I for one love your videos Matt and can't wait to watch when I get the email to say a new one is ready to watch. You do what's right for you just don't listen to the hate. There's more people who enjoy your content than don't. If they don't like it they can always look at something else. Good luck Matt
Mat, I enjoy all your videos. If you can retire, do it! But I will miss your soothing voice.
Love the content, keep the videos coming been a long time follower and you always keep me entertained. I have learned so much about products that I will never see or touch. Always get excite when I get a notification about one of your videos!!! Cheers from Canada!!!!
Shame you had such negative feedback on the projector, I enjoyed seeing it and have put my deposit down. I probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise, certainly not in time to get the early bird price.
The internet is turning into a depressing place for sure. It's a no-win thing it feels. Not one to give advice but I feel if you keep making videos, you should do them at your own pace and about things you like and when you feel like it. Seen many creators take that approach for their sanity. Some don't and are burning out trying to appease people, which we know is not really a thing that works that well. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you well.
Please ignore those irritating posts - the rest of us realise this is not a request-a-review channel. However, a cheeky request all the same. If you do decide to move north, please take your garden studio with you. You'll have a nice warm place for you and the cat to watch movies and maybe be inspired to add the occasional very welcome video to your YT library. Just take it easy on yourself - videos when you feel up to it are fine by me.
Hang in there; take your time; make sure you aren't low on vitamins and such-like. The real world and the internet are rough and tough places, and being low on Vitamin D doesn't help. I speak from experience (at least about the real world, I guess).
All has been said already, one way or another. But I feel for you. Always do whatever feels right, and taking a step back is never wrong. Still, you bring a lot of positivity in my little world, already for years and years, that makes the large one a little more bearable. ☺️
I didn't know there was such thing as a foaming mouthwash, I thought they were all non foaming. I bought a WaterPick years ago and put warm water and mouthwash into that. You run it along the gum-line as well to clean anything out. I'm probably just going to get all my teeth taken out and replaced but I don't fancy it. Careful with Dyson stuff. Their ball cleaner isn't what you think it is. There's Dyson OnTrac headphones on Amazon now at £196.53 but there's a big banner stating "Frequently returned item" although they have very reasonable reviews. Glad to hear that you might consider the new smart #2. I'll definitely be getting 1 or 2 of them. Being a night worker for the last 24 years, I don't get on with the sun so I'm not falling for a cabriolet again but I will consider the Brabus. AI needs a human brain to tell it what to do. The people who can't find a use with AI are the brainless dullards who haven't got the IQ to be able to work out how they'd use it. AI has changed my life. I needed 3 niche piece of software. Being niche, they were very expensive and they expect you to pay every year. I spent 2 days on each one getting AI to code an app for me. Now I have 3 custom piece of software that I know how to use perfectly because I designed it.
There are some very selfish people around in general especially since COVID, if I had to draw a line somewhere. From morons coasting around with pops & bangs exhausts, to bicycle thief gangs made to feel invincible with balaclavas, to me me me people on social media such as sad individuals who post offensive rubbish for their own self-important weird satisfaction. The majority still wants to have fun and see fun & interesting things, without needing the oxygen of a notification of a reply to their selfish comments. I'm picking up some of the Philips "Moving Sound" stereos lately including my second yellow D8304 and I am looking for a red "Roller" - happy to see Philips (their brand owner I guess) has brought out a modern version for fun.
Hi Mat - long time viewer! Huge fan of all your work over the years. Just to echo what others have said here - please take what time you feel you need. I don't believe this "community" (like it or not this has developed 😀) is going anywhere and also that it truly values you. If you feel able / want to make 2 a month (or however many) then speaking for myself would wholeheartedly support you in that. It was really quite upsetting to see you at such a low ebb by the end of this cast - genuinely sending all the v best, whatever you decide to do.
With regards to negative comments, as a regular viewer on YouTube I read and comment myself sometimes. We never see these negative comments. (I didn't see a single on on the Projector one), the reason probably being that negatively voted comments are moved by YouTube to the bottom of the list. The vast majority of people greatly enjoy your videos, and you can see that in the comments that are upvoted. The negative, rude comments are downvoted to the bottom.
"Don't give up You still have us Don't give up We don't need much of anything Don't give up 'Cause somewhere there's a place Where we belong" (Peter Gabriel) :-)
Take the time. We’ll be here for you whenever you’re ready.
Echoing everyone else's sentiments wrt reducing output and looking after yourself first. Also that Dyson toothbrush looks like a colossal pain to use. Think I'll stick to my normal toothbrush, my Waterpik and a bottle of mouthwash to get the same result only way cheaper and nowhere as unwieldy.
Just want to add my voice to all those saying do what makes you happy, and ignore the idiots. Nil carborundum and all that. Always happy to see a new video from you, and I've learnt a lot over the past ten years of watching them. If two a month is better for you, it will be better for us. It's really nice up here in Scotland by the way, on Argyll's Secret Coast. Stay well.
Make videos about whatever you want. Do it as often or as little as you want. Ignore idiots in comments. Keep being you. We'll keep watching mate.
I'd really miss your videos Mat if you decided to pack it all in. I fully agree that the world is in a very dark state - by far the most depressing I have seen in my 66 years on the planet. I really feel for you getting negative, childish and downright stupid comments, when it's obvious how much thought and care goes into your channel. I really hope Techmoan continues, even if you significantly reduce how many videos you decide to make. There's so much garbage out there, it's great to see someone not succumbing to the path of clickbait and bullshit for people with the attention span of a goldfish.
Downest down ending since Empire Strikes Back. Hope everything comes around for you in Return of the Techmoan. Kepp doing whatever you want whenever you can. Best wishes.
The world is increasingly negative and it must be very hard to do your job in this atmosphere. It’s also become quite different quite quickly with ai etc. but please remember that most of the people who watch your content appreciate the way you do what you do. And everything needs balance. You should do what’s right for you. Take more time to enjoy your life. But don’t let the bastards grind you down. Things will eventually turn around the world is in constant ebb and flow. And we all feel like that annoying guy sometimes, but the world needs annoying guys. And annoying cats. Take care :)
I enjoy your videos and as a man who is a similar age to you, I understand the challenges of health etc. I think two videos a month is a good target, don't burn yourself out.
I think the mask filter thing is... A risky proposition. Absolutely you are getting the noise from vibration input. Holding electro motors in a way that they do not transmit vibration is very difficult, if the costs are not to explode.
Guess it's time the Patreons start a petition for a blue 'Techmoan lived here XXXX-20XX' plaque . . . Don't hurt yourself. Whatever it is - YouTube, comments, algorithms etc - it's not worth it.
You sound awfully tired. From my end I would say, figure out what you like to do, and do it in your own pace. We'll be here anyway. The best videos will be those where your genuine interest is peaked. Be aware that being tired really messes up your ability to handle any kind of feedback, or handling the state of the world.
Well I enjoy the videos even though I know nothing about the subject generally or indeed will probably never own similar stuff. But if you are going down the request route, I’ve got loads of Wood Pigeons in my garden doing nothing so how about using pigeon post instead of the internet give those lazy blighters a work out, and I really like Marmite crisps so I would enjoy a review of those. Chin uppermost.
I have no interest in projector videos, so, and hear me out, I don't watch them. Crazy I know.
You should put this one out as public, as a sort of "taster" for your Patreon. (Or a copy of it with an extra intro.) I'm confident you'd get a sudden flurry of new subscribers, if only for the previous video follow-up parts. I doubt your current subscribers would mind!
This is one of my two favourite channels on YouTube.
I still remember the first time we interacted, way before I joined Patreon, (even knew about it). I was in hospital, preparing to have my knee replaced. You had just released a video about something, which I watched on my iPad while I was waiting. After I watched it, I commented on the regular YouTube channel that I had watched the video waiting for surgery and it made me feel better. You replied to me, wishing me a good outcome. And I remember thinking, "Wow, this guy from England, who makes these cool videos, took the time to reach out to this shmuck in Ohio, USA, to wish him good luck with his surgery... that's flippin' amazing!" That's something I'll never forget. You are flippin' amazing. Take care of Bees-Knees.
You seem a bit fed up. I can relate - I think we are living in quite negative times one way and another....but the overwhelming majority of us support you Mat, hopefully that's of some comfort. Life is short and being happy is the most important thing, longer breaks between vids, more holidays and listening to records sounds like a good way to achieve that👍🏻
Ey up Mat! Balls to the whiners. Some people seem to just live to whinge and spread their misery. As much as I enjoy watching new videos from you, I’m happy to have less of them if it means that your off camera self is doing better.
Do what you think is best.
Mat, I'm with you on finding a quiet little place up in Scotland to get away from it all. Every facet of life on this entire planet seems to be enshittified and it only looks like things will get worse for a long time and won't improve until long after we're all dead and gone. We've all got to cope however we can. You've done a great job with this channel no matter what a few numpties say about it, I've enjoyed every minute I've seen here for the last nine years and all the backlog videos I've watched as well. I support whatever course you decide to take.👍
Mat you've helped me through some bad times with your videos, I think what you do is amazing, i would like to thank you so so much
I love your videos for what its worth. You seemed upset at the end of that video, I genuinely hope you are ok. Of course I don't know you, but as a fellow human being, I do care. As for videos, make em when you can. Your health comes first. Look after yourself mate!
Mat, just want to let you know my story on getting a tooth implant. Nearly a year ago I had a bridge removed on my left lower jaw, leaving me with no molars on that side, so chewing on that side was out. Even though I was hesitant at first, my dentist gave me the pluses & minuses of an implant--something he'd done many of. Although I was hesitant at first, I decided for it and the process for me was relatively easy and the final procedure was done a couple of months ago. Really am glad I had it done. Does this go well for every one--probably not, but in my case it worked out great--still have a gap on the left side, but much better than it was without any teeth on that side. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know that it just might be a good thing for you, but if you don't like the idea of it--you know what's best for you.🙂
All I will say is - ignore the "moaners". You're making videos for me, and a few others - and the cat - we're the only people that matter. If "some" people don't like it - they can try another channel.
I also use cantilevered platforms for my devices that refuse to be small enough to fit where I want them. My favorite such shelf is an old stop sign I picked up somewhere along the way. Thank you for this video and any others you make, Mat.
It's maybe hard to do, but I tune out the stupid comments. There are a lot of people who like & appreciate my videos. Sod everyone else. I find the process interesting, and if I don't, I'll do videos on something else, or stop making them.
Mats teeth livestream when?
Those Dyson headphones with the facemask would make a good shelf prop. Confuse all the people who don't know what they are and will never see this video. I have seen quite a few youtubers giving up trying to feed the algorithm and just making the videos they want to, when they want, and how they want to. Nice if that is an option, but I'm sure it's bad for ad revenue if that counts for anything these days. Put me down for the VHS subscription service anyway, sent from you remote cottage in the middle of nowhere to my remote cottage in the middle of nowhere, by some very hefty carrier pigeons.
Flippin' 'eck. I can completely understand the way you feel about everything, the amount of time and effort you've put in week after week over the years. There are many many people that appreciate that of course! I'm sorry there are enough who don't that they get you down. I've often said to people that I'd quite like to disappear and live on a croft on a remote island, I know what you mean there! Very much enjoyed the oddcast, great viewing for a Sunday. Take care!
The Dyson headphones would be a good video to do. Tech people remember them, and want to know what they were like. It makes for a great thumbnail, and there's a lot of comedy potential (you found half of it in this video!).
I always watch every video you put out and have done for several years. I also see how the noise of the deconstructive idiots gets to you when there are probably hundreds of very satisfied if largely silent viewers for every pointless and ill-informed comment. For what little it's worth I think you should stick with what you want to do because many people will watch you for your item selection and personality. Having a decent number of people - a core, loyal following - is surely more important than the inevitable peaks and troughs of chasing whatever is fashionable from one week to the next.
Please don't get hung up on the vocal minority. A few people who are miserable with their own lives don't reflect the thoughts of the thousands of others that genuinely appreciate and enjoy your work, like myself. That said, if you need to scale back and take time to enjoy life, anyone with a brain should respect that. I certainly hope you stick around. Getting a Techmoan notification email brightens up my day as I'm sure it does for many others.
It really is an absolute minority. Read all the comments on patreon (who also like him so much, they're willing to pay him monthly!) and YouTube and you'll be hard pressed to find the negative ones. They're overwhelmingly drowned out by the positive ones. Sometimes we need to put things into perspective.
Mat, the guy who complained about the projector video can go away if he's not interested. The people who moan about AI inclusion or paid promotion videos can do the same. I watch you because you are like me and, in a way, validate my interests and facination with tech, both new abs old. You are completely valid and there are many of us who love what you do. Even if you only put out one video a month I would still be here supporting you. Take as much time as you need but please stay. You are a much needed light in a dark world. Just remember, I, like many others here, have just watched you ramble for an hour and forty minutes and loved it. Hold on to that!
Your video about the Ember Smart Mug gave me a tiny shred of hope that the coffee mug with a built-in clock and speaker might be real, but alas, "we're the mugs because we bought it" (7:35): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1liGFCmv4
Mat, you are great! Only do what you like! The viewers are not your boss! I am of you age and I can fully relate to your questions on how to go on! Please follow your heart! Your well being is the most important thing! And please do not forget all the people that are loving your work. Those are the ones that are more important than the persons that keep demanding things or are complaining. You do and did inspire me in the way you show what you love and inspire people by this. Best Wishes!
I'd love to suggest that you dedicate a day every week to doing nothing, except listening to your records or watching those unopened UHD blu-rays etc., and be incredibly strict about it, make it absolutely sacrosanct, and I'd hope you'd be able to do it, but experience as a human makes me fear such plans are doomed to fail. But hopefully you can work out a more balanced schedule that leaves you satisfied and fulfilled, and not frustrated and exhausted. (Please share the secret with us when you're successful.) As to Ai - while I have concerns about it, and dislike the ridiculous fervour around it, being an actual thinking person I can see its incredible value as a tool in many, many fields, even in something as simple as enhancing an old advert. I feel exactly the same as the Mac developer Daniel Jalkut, who said about AI, "My take on AI is, essentially, everybody who’s against it is too against it and everybody who’s for it is too for it", which seems to me to hit the nail on the head. Being reactionary to any use of it whatsoever, which I see everywhere on YouTube, is not in any way productive. I hope that kind of thing'll calm down in time. I always particularly enjoy the Oddcasts, so thank you for this nice long video. I hope you have a less tiring week next week. Cheers.
That toothbrush looks like something the Dad in Gremlins invented! Very odd design cues coming from Dyson! Even working, it feels like a product that solves one minor inconvenience by creating several others. Glad you got the refund! Adding to this to say, this was a great oddcast! The Dyson segment alone feels worthy of a main channel release.
In my experience, we (and I count myself in this) are very good at elevating the views of a few negative people over the views of many positive people. Needless to say though, do what makes you happy and brings peace to your life. If you stick around here, I’ll keep backing you—I enjoy your content at any pace. If you leave, I’ll only wish you all the best.
You're the best. Take your time and be good to yourself.
"The world has become a negative place". I would love to say otherwise, but it is sadly true. And negativity tends to be loud and stick with someone. I appreciate what you do and how you do it, but I don't say it often enough... positivity tends to be quiet. Take care of yourself, slow down, do what you feel helps you. We are grateful for what we get and we do care about you!
Stick with making the videos that interest you and make you happy. And put them out at a frequency that is healthy for you. At the end of the day, there’s a better chance you’ll be making content that you enjoy, and everybody else does too. You’ll drive yourself simply crazy. trying to make everybody happy all the time. It’s impossible, and futile.
Recent patron but long time viewer, I could listen to you talk about anything! Projectors, kids toys, or whatever. Thank you for doing what you do.
Do what is right for you Mat. I hope you keep making videos. I never tire of them. try not to get burn out.
If it were me, I would complete any existing commitments, I would stop the Patreon permanently, it just adds into the toxicity of people thinking they have some kind of ownership or authority. Then take a 3/6 month break and then come back and just do videos for fun about whatever I wanted. Do a video once a month or less frequently. Most likely with comments turned off. Maybe even think about using a different platform other than Youtube for new stuff. Just my two cents but I don't think it's worth the hassle and stress in the current set up.
Only important Question: If you vanish to scotland: will the cat come with you? besides that: do what you and your mistress makes you happy.
Nothing can happen until the cat passes on. He loses his mind on a five minute trip to the vets.
I think I can say this on behalf of 99.99% of people - Do whatever you want. Seeing a notification that Techmoan has released a new video is always a positive for me. I've just sat and watched you for 1 hour and 40 mins.. They say 'never read the comments' for a reason. 'You can't please all the people all the time' is another exceptionally valid cliché here.
Just do the best you can. Quality not quantity is always best. Best wishes
Talking of old songs... "Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone? They paved paradise, put up a parking lot." I appreciate you, just the way you are.
You are right, the world is a horrible place at present but I think I can speak for everyone on here when I say it is a better place with you in it.
Absolutely!
Now watching, you just need to do what makes you happy, :) Random question, I love the Honda E you have but now Handa have the Super N, what do you think of it? Would you get that next? How have you got on with the E? And also, Dyson didn't help himself being a huge backer of Brexit :(
I’m always happy to see more small cars for sale but for me the Super N is quite a step down from the e. One of my favourite features of the e is its insanely tight turning circle, second only to a Smart car. The Super N has a very normal turning circle. The N’s fixtures and fittings are built to a 20k price whereas the e was 35k seven or eight years ago. I also love how the e’s camera wing mirrors enable the car to be very narrow but with plenty of shoulder room inside. Plus the super n only has a reversing camera not the 360 cam I like. So it’s not for me. But I also wouldn’t recommend the e now, given it’s age.
Hope you feel better soon, i've been quite down and low energy recently. Take your time with the videos. I mainly look forward to the oddcasts. I agree about Dyson, getting a nighthood when he closes down uk factories doesn't seem right
Take all the time you need Mat, and set the pace your way. Whatever the pace is you can make videos, we'll always be here. Love your videos and style, don't ever change.
Definitely, take your time, we don't want to see another content creator falling into burnout 🙏
Mate, two a month is fine for me. Tell me if I am wrong, because I have watched you for years, but I’m not sure that with every topic you film, your interest level peaks. That’s totally understandable with any job, and this is a job, albeit a great job and one you’re the GOAT at. They’re still fab videos, mind! Even just one video a month where you are buzzing with excitement and can’t wait to share some weird thing you’ve found, take it apart, and all the normal TM things is worth 10 times the Patreon sub a month and more. If you're interested, the video that first got me hooked was the CED one! Look after yourself, Mat, and thank you.
You have my subscription for the awesome work you have done in the past. New videos are a bonus. Take care of yourself.
"Even the misus says oh that's nice... And she hates everything!" 😂 "The usual kinda horse manure nonsense from a call center person who didn't know the answer but was just trying to blag it to get you off the phone" 😆🤣 Oh Mat, you're killing me here!! Don't ever change!
Right now I'm eating breakfast at a hotel in Seattle, on a work trip. It is GREAT to see new Techmoan content pop up! I agree with other's comments - Please record and post at what ever pace works best for YOU. I'm sure some take much longer than others to research, shoot and produce, even if they end up similar lengths. Take care of yourself. I always look fwd to your videos.
Just do what feels right for yourself, don't burn out whatever you do!
Just do videos you can do Mat. 1 a month or whatever suits. Now I am going to watch this video thanks
I blame Bumpboxx for this ;) Take all the time you need
Two times a month is better than a burnt out Techmoan. Take the time you need
