Three radios and one other thing.

Here’s a simple video about my hunt for a surrogate radio for my Japanese portable stereo. It ended up being a surprisingly worthwhile endeavour though, as I uncovered an interesting gadget that I would otherwise have been unaware of.

https://youtu.be/7W7iOvG1I9s

I’ve managed to secure more sleep over the last couple of nights - as a result I’m feeling quite a bit more resilient to nonsense than I was on Sunday’s update.

I do still intend to take longer breaks between videos though. This is not to spend longer on making each video, instead it’s to give my offline life more variety, meaning…and down time.

Oh and I found some amazing instant noodles that I want to show you in the next update

Take care.

UPDATE: Added a couple more minutes to the end.

UPDATE 2: Fixed a couple of tiny things.

Love this. You found 3 useful radio devices. )I’m tempted by the Roberts and the internet radio device. The design of that internet radio was not what I was expecting! It’s almost like an old central heating control from the 80s. It would also be great for anyone who has trouble operating small fiddly controls. Once this is setup it’s easy to use with its large dial and 2 clear buttons.

Yes I’d love a device like this that could be configured from a phone to select whatever stations were allocated to the positions of a dial. The current selection isn’t exactly what the average 80 year old would enjoy, but if you could link a similar device to Radio 3, 4, Classic FM etc it might be ideal.

Thanks for the introduction to NTS! I'd never heard of it either. It's really good, you don't need that device, and it has loads of new music, I might even subscribe

T
Techmoan · October 11, 2026

Yes the Atonemo is a new gadget, but apparently NTS has been around for 15 years. I had no idea it existed until now.

Nice to see a neat modernization of an older boombox. I would have liked to see the back though, curious how it's wired and how you got the power for the internet radio worked out.

T
Techmoan · October 11, 2026

I’m saving that for the next Patreon update as it’s not quite finished yet.

More noodle content please! Watching this video reminds me how much I miss spectrum analysers.

I've not listened to NTS' streams, but their YouTube channel has some absolutely cracking mixes in "The NTS Guide To" series.

No app/bluetooth on the FiiO one?

T
Techmoan · October 10, 2026

No it’s just a normal radio/headphone amp. https://www.fiio.com/RR11

MJFJ · October 9, 2026

I like the internet radio it matched well with your JVC boombox you would think it was part of the boombox. Velco sounds a good idea. The small FM radio could be attached at the back of the boombox maybe using magnets just an idea. Very interesting and enjoyable video

Going purely on aesthetics I like the Tin-Nik one, but it looks like the interface is a nightmare to use. If I was personally going to do it, I'd just throw a Bluetooth receiver behind the unit and use my phone, but I get that isn't what you were going for!

Hard to judge Mat's level of sarcasm here but I for one am excited and up for more noodle content!! - ps as a semi regular NTS listener was delighted to see their tie-in device featured. Niche but really cool imho. One feature not mentioned is that can also function as an Airplay/Google Cast etc streaming endpoint.

T
Techmoan · October 8, 2026

Thanks for the tip on the AirPlay thing. That could be useful here. Oh and the noodles are honestly some of the best I’ve found.

That NTS-only device is intriguing. I'm vaguely familiar with the radio stations, having come across some of their shows on Mixcloud in the past. Not sure I really need the extra device, but the design is really nice. (I have a Pure Elan Connect+ DAB/FM/internet radio in my room currently, mostly for listening to BBC Radio 3 Unwind or one of the Soma FM internet channels to help me relax.) We've got a Roberts DAB+ radio in the kitchen for when we need some distraction or laughs. It does the job well, but I find their more minimal display system annoying, and it looks like their portable radio has the same design. That FIIO FM radio is tempting, if only for the nostalgia hit of manually dialling around the frequencies. I did that a LOT in my teens!

That sudden burst of John and Yoko needed a content warning :)

For some reason the video has several languages of auto generated subtitles, but not English (it defaulted to Arabic for me). YouTube shenanigans, I'm guessing.

T
Techmoan · October 8, 2026

It might sort itself out, or maybe it crashed out due to my mumbling.

M
Matthew Hunt · October 8, 2026

I've had my eye on that FiiO RR11, mainly because of the lovely metal click-on-off-volume knob. But I would prefer a model with a speaker. Then this year they released the RR13 with a speaker - but the volume knob doesn't click on-off anymore. So no sale.

I was JUST thinking about needing to find a new way to discover music. Thanks to you I’ll be giving NTS a listen, it seems like the exact thing I’ve been looking for!

Drew Tavendale · October 7, 2026

The design doesn't do much for me, but I do very much like the philosophy of that NTS Atomeno, and I very much appreciate the physical buttons. Stuff like the WiiM Pro does more, but it's way more complicated and requires using an app (it's a fair bit larger than this, too). I favour the "do one thing, do it simply and do it well" approach, especially as I know that with too much choice I'd spend far longer paralysed by indecision than actually listening to anything. Glad you got some sleep, and looking forward to the noodle reviews.

Frank Wolthuis · October 7, 2026

I know it's not quite on topic, but if you are listening to a "regular" internet radio, try looking up Booty FM. It's a Japanese station based in Sapporo, plays a lot of hip-hop, boogie, old skool dance music, RnB etc. I have had it on my alarm clock for years. No commercials or DJs, just the odd jingle.

F
Frank Wolthuis · October 7, 2026

Nice to see the NTS Player and how it works. I have the regular Atonemo Streamplayer, connected to my 1990 Philips amplifier. That is basically a Google Chromecast Audio. The sound is very good, but I have had some hiccups where the connection between the audio streaming app and the amplifier was lost. They support is very quick and helpful. In my case I'm not sure if the problem was the device or the apps I was using, tbh (Musicolet and Hi-Fi Cast). Or Google Cast service.

Interesting video. I had a similar issue several years back when I purchased a double-din Pioneer Carrozzeria car radio from Japan, CD/MD/AM/FM. I purchased a "Car Frequency Changer Converter Antenna Radio FM Band Expander for Import" from eBay. Yeah, just copy and paste that on eBay. It basically connects between the antenna and radio. The tuner would read wrong, but I got all the FM stations. Whether something like this can be installed inside a boombox is of course another matter.

T
Techmoan · October 7, 2026

Yes I’m aware of those, but I’ve never heard of anyone using one in a boombox…I’ve got to assume they don’t work.

M
Mark Hesse · October 7, 2026

Do you still have that "New York, London, Paris, Munich😉" internet radio? That one seems like it might have been a good candidate for this project.

T
Techmoan · October 7, 2026

It’s somewhere…

M
Mac Kung Fu · October 7, 2026

Based only on your video, I'm about 70% sure that NTS player is a Raspberry Pi in a box with dials and buttons.

T
Techmoan · October 7, 2026

It’d make sense. If it works then there’s really no need for anyone to go to all the time and expense of creating a very similar thing again from scratch.

V
VWestlife · October 7, 2026

I hate those modern radios with a digital tuner masquerading as an "analog" tuning dial. Unfortunately they're the only kind you can get anymore, now that the supply of old-school, truly analog radios from India has dried up (no surprise, as the equipment they were using to make plastic case moldings was clearly on its last legs).

Great video! That final NTS device is great! Your music taste is intriguing, I like how you remain open minded to all genres, I wish I could. What are your top 10 albums (if you had to choose/can be bothered to)

T
Techmoan · October 7, 2026

To have a top ten of anything I'd need a better memory. I really don't have an answer - I couldn't even name one album that I'd put in there.
