120Hz UST Projector - Xgimi Aura 3 Max

I’ve got a new projector, the latest and greatest…but getting this video made has been a challenge.

https://youtu.be/KPCWngbDCoc

I have to apologise that this one won’t have more than a couple of hours or so of exclusivity to Patrons. XGIMI needed the video to go out today (Wednesday), but the parcel was delayed so I only managed to start work on this at the weekend.

It's involved long days and late nights getting this one ready on time. I was up into the early hours getting the final elements together.

I should mention that the video cannot be changed now, it’s too late for me to add/delete or alter anything. However I feel that I might return to this one with an update in the future.

Perhaps I could do a ‘what I learned during my year using projectors’ type of round up. Right now though I just need a few hours off. I'm off to the chippy first though.

Take care.

A bit late but just watched the Oddcast so just want to say that I was delighed that you were reviewing this projector as I had already put my $50 dollars down for it (although I'm a little concerned there is a £50 one showing up too now) and wanted another top YouTubers opinion.

Techmoan · October 13, 2026

I’m not following you in the send part of the message, what’s this £50 one?

Gosh I miss going to the chippy, it's a bit of a drive from here in Florida to get to the nearest decent one. It's always been a source of confusion to me why they never took off here, but apparently it's something to do with the availability of fish. Anyway, love the projector but it's far outside of my budget right now.

How is this screen projector combo for spackle. Unfortunately my eyes pick up the spackle quite a lot on ones I have seen in the shops.

Hard to get my head around these short throw projectors but I am learning alot from your Videos Mat. Very interesting and very enjoyable watch. I love the compact size of it and the picture looked amazing. Excellent video

An American might call it "quite impressive", but I now know that to Brits, that means "only a little impressive".

So happy you’re getting these awesome projectors to review. I’m still very happy with my Hisense PX3 Pro. My only gripe is that it doesn’t cover the lens when not in use so I need to clean the dust off about once a month and our place is pretty clean with hardwood floors. It would be much more problematic in a carpeted house. I like the idea of an auto opening cabinet but I haven’t found one that is good but affordable yet.

Battered sausage, fish or pie? That is the question.

Techmoan · September 30, 2026

A nice piece of Haddock. I'm in Wigan so you can't move without tripping over a pie.

Steam's Big Picture Mode, for example, has certainly made using a PC with a TV or projector much easier, but it's still a bit of a faff, especially if, as most PC gamers would, you want to use a mouse and keyboard rather than a controller, so I expect you're right about the projector being more applicable to console gamers, and therefore the 120Hz being less relevant. Talking of consoles, though - I do like the look of the projector: conservative, but tasteful and well-suited to many decor schemes, but I can't help but be reminded of the Atari 2600 every time I look at it... Nice bit of kit, though. Projectors aren't currently for me, but I do like to see the forward progress of the sector, and I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for a new thing that is better, and substantially so, than an old thing, which seems like a sad rarity nowadays. Cheers, Mat, and hope you enjoyed what you got from the chippy.

The cyclical nature of design interests me. Of course the original 2600 was designed to look like the HiFi gear of the late 70s and I presume these HiFis were themselves designed to be reminiscent of furniture from an earlier time with their wooden sides, in order to better fit into homes. `just like when TVs came in cabinets with doors and Queen Anne legs so they looked like a cocktail cabinet. As a toddler I used to drive my parents potty by shutting the doors in the middle of their viewing.

Keep the projector and screen content coming Mat.🙂 I'm not interested in using them at home, but I enjoy watching you demonstrate them and how this particular technology has improved over a relatively short time.

This really could be what I'm looking for. I'm one of the few people who will want a 4K 120Hz PC input for the living room display in my new house, as I'll be putting the PC central and wiring HDMI to multiple devices. The other device I will use the PC on is my 4K 120Hz OLED TV. The room isn't big enough for a big TV and there's a window on the wall I want to use. The good looks are a benefit as I won't have space for a cabinet that houses it entirely. The price is a little scary considering everything else that's going on but it may be worth reserving.

Thanks - very tempting. You only have to put it 30cm from the wall for a 140" image. That's impressive. You may have convinced me to go ultra short throw.

Look, don't know if you want the advice or not, but from my computer mag journalism days, be careful about promising anything when accepting review samples. You owe them nothing. You shouldn't be rushing anything to accommodate their marketing schedule! My replies when any review sample was offered used to be something like, "Thanks for this. Yes, this looks like something I would cover. Please send it along and we'll add it to the queue." And inevitably they'd want to know when, and if I could tell them then I would—but I wouldn't make promises.

T
Techmoan · September 30, 2026

The problem with this one is there’s timing I needed to get right for the information in the video to be accurate.

What a gorgeous projector, and an excellent review. I agree that this is the one technology that is improving and expanding at quite a pace. It reminds me of the old commercial of the computer system, where the guy buys it, and by the time he drives it home, it's out-dated. But, the funny thing with my circumstance, I seem to use the TV less and less. So, it's probably not for me, but no question this was a great, even-keeled review on this projector. One question: How would it cope with Bees-Knees deciding to lay down on the top of the unit and it trying to power on?

T
Techmoan · September 30, 2026

Oddly enough one reason that a projector became viable for the main screen in the lounge was also due to me watching less TV than in days gone by. I wouldn’t want a projector on all day, but for a couple of hours late at night it’s ideal. The rest of the time it’s all stored away. Oh and as for the cat, he can’t get up anywhere any more…but his hair still gets about.

Aww. Chips! I need chips now.

Hope you enjoyed your chippy tea … I miss chippies that don’t have ‘battered’ everything lol

A

Well, that is gorgeous. No need for a big bulky TV with that set-up. Just beautiful (not that I can afford this … but it's nice to know where things are going).

A projector learnings roundup would be great. It seems like they have come a long way and the market has had a big shakeup in the last year or two, so I think that would be an informative and interesting vid.

Off to the chippy... There's a new segment for the Oddcast. Techmoan's Chippy Review. And yes, I'd absolutely watch that haha

I second this!
