Here’s what’s been going on with the hospital.

This is a long block of text, but there’s not a great deal else for me to do right now. Typed into an iPad Mini.

A bit of history…

I went to the GP because I was really going downhill. You know when you’re ill. I thought I might have a bladder infection…just a guess. It is extremely rare for me to go to the Dr because my surgery is notoriously hopeless. They’d struggle to diagnose what was wrong with a patient with a missing head. I’m sure the whole place is a front for something, I don’t know what, but it definitely doesn’t require any medical training.

As predicted they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me other than ‘there was no obvious infection’. They suggested I might want to go to hospital as they ‘might’ be able to do more tests. No one wants to go to hospital in England - at best you’ll be waiting six hours to see anyone, at worse it could literally be days sitting in a chair. Hospitals also really don’t need random people wandering into Accident & Emergency who just feel a bit ropey so I went home.

Meanwhile, in the afternoon the results of an earlier blood test came in. The GP rang me at home and said after seeing them that I definitely needed to go to the hospital, so reluctantly I gathered a few essentials and the Mrs took me to A&E.

Last Wednesday (day two in the Hospital) they took blood to put in a culture to see if it grew anything when put in a Petri dish. By the way imagine having a type of dish named after you, although I suppose Dave Pyrex was another.

Anyway in the meantime they gave me two blood transfusions and more than a few broad spectrum intravenous antibiotic drips while they figured what was going on. Apparently I was running a bit of a temperature, not that I’d noticed. By the way ‘running’ is a weird verb, you can run a temperature, the bath and the gauntlet.

Then there was an endoscope down the throat because an earlier X-ray had revealed potential swelling in the throat. It wasn’t there. All clear.

By this point I’d been in three days and was feeling a heck of lot better. The weakness had gone, as had the hot and cold temperature swings. Clearly the treatment was working.

So by Friday it seemed things were all set for me going home by the end of the day with a bag full of strong antibiotic pills.

But then the culture results came back and showed there had been something in the blood. As a result they wanted me to keep taking a more targeted antibiotic drip every eight hours. So no going home for me.

Long story short it seems my symptoms were the results of a blood infection, which I’m sure had itself been caused by my mega infection from February/March. After all, for me one thing just lead into another without ever fully recovering from the first.

So now I’m just waiting until Monday when a Consultant can make a decision on my future, thumbs up or down Roman Emperor style as to being set free. It seems a bit silly for me to be taking up a bed based on the state my blood was in back when I arrived. I’m sure it’s much better now.

They also plan to send a dietician to see me due to the rapid weight loss. Even though I look fuller in my face, apparently I’ve lost a few more kg. I’m now 82kg instead of the 95-100kg before this started. However I looked up the ideal BMI range for my age and I’m now in the zone. So every dark cloud…

Oh and the liver stuff is not really relevant to this. That’s going to be investigated separately, an MRI is the first step. There’s a looming colonoscopy too, which is a pain in the a*se.

So that’s my current status. I’m anxious to get back home, eat something with a bit of bite resistance, have a long shower, sleep in my own bed, watch my own TV, but more than anything else…use my own loo in peace. After that I want to make some progress on the next video, this will be as much for my own sanity as anything else.

The main thing I want to do now is to thank everyone for all the positive words, messages and encouragement. When I arrived in bed 15, the previous person who’d been in this location had left a ‘get well soon’ card behind, signed by their colleagues/family. I joked to the Mrs that I should keep it displayed to pretend those well wishes were for me.

As it was though I ended up getting hundreds of messages via Patreon which really meant a tremendous amount. It actually made me a bit emotional and I’m speaking as someone who usually is only capable of displaying Vulcan/Norther British Male levels of emotion.

If I do ever get out of here I’ll let you know. With any luck I should have returned to my pre February levels of energy, but with a way more unkempt beard.

Take care.

Photo was taken outside the front of the hospital yesterday evening. The ‘do not sit here’ sign carries on to read …’to smoke’.

Besides being extremely happy that the blood problem looks like something you'll get over, I found this a funny and enjoyable read. (and the picture made me laugh out loud). Maybe you'll consider doing a few more chatty missives like this. (I hope that longer-form blogging didn't totally die in favour of less mindful and more disposable social media posting.) Very glad you're on the mend Mr Moan.

I just came here because I was worried about your health. It’s the first time I signed on patreon, as it’s not my kind of thing usually, and I don’t have a very wealthy bank account. But your videos, the passion you have in them, all of them reminds me of my father, who introduced me to the wonderful world of audio many years ago. You’re like a father to me from this point of view, since he passed away in 2020. Hang in there pal. You mean a lot for me… and you can ask my wife, I don’t say this for a lot of people (actually for her, and… hummm who else? I know that « Vulcan feeling » very well). I wait for your next video like a child praying to see Santa Claus. Thanks for all, and… I don’t know how to end this cry baby comment, so, take care and hope to see you soon.

Hope you're out soon and the treatment is working as intended. I know you want to get "back to work" as soon as possible (and yeah, so do I) but not at the expense of your health, of course. Having said that, the day you debut your new office space, I would consider a quadraphonic episode. Maybe Quattro? Or maybe go back on your past videos where space was an issue to fully give a proper assessment? Just a thought at the risk of being insensitive. And for the record, no other podcaster does tech like you. I subscribe to many, but I'm a Patreon only to you!

Blood infections can be dangerous, but when treated correctly you should recover fully I guess, easier at least than cancer... As I've said previously, it often never rains but it pours with health stuff; one thing pushes things out of kilter and the result is further hospital visits. The key bit is working out how to get everything back into balance. Last year I had a course of chemo and didn't seem to recover well after it stopped. Then out of nowhere I started getting vertigo and dizziness. On top of that my gallstones started giving me more pain than normal. Obviously chemo batters your immune system, and it led to me having a double ear infection and chronic cholecystitis - an infection of the gallbladder. The former was dealt with antibiotics (although I had to keep bashing the GPs for them - they seem allergic to prescriptions for oral antibiotics) and the latter by removing the offending gallbladder. On the liver stuff - a family member had a "shadow" found on their liver last year and was prepared by the medics for the worst, but turned out to be a benign thing. Fingers crossed your issue is similar. Just a shame I'm assuming you're off the clinic trial now? Very glad you're feeling better (one silver lining of being ill is how good it feels as you recover) and I'm very much looking forward to your new video, whenever it arrives.

Well it’s 7am on a Sunday morning and I’m lying in bed with an infection, so I thought I’d let you know, cuz you’d be very interested, right? 😂 Matt, think you need to ask a very important question at the hospital:- “do you know who I am and what I mean to the tech community?”, go on to say “these people need me, and making me sit here stabbing me with a cannula needle is not going to expand their knowledge, no it is it? No it’s not..”. Just saying # 😁 Thinking of you matey. All the best, Lee & Iwona x

D

I can think of a far more important question; "What kind of endoscope is this and can I make a video about it ?" :-) For my last three endoscopies they have persuaded me not to have a general anaesthetic, which I think makes things easier for them, so I know that that the local hospital uses Olympus equipment.

Thomas Larsen · April 13, 2025

Hey Matt, thanks for the update. I say that as someone from a culture - Danish rural - that leaves nothing to a Vulcan/Northener Brit in terms of not expressing emotion... And, aside wishing you all well and a fast recovery and "all that", and appreciating whatever the NHS can do for you - and, absolutely, don't feel bad about taking up a spot even if you're on the up-and-up - that is kind of the reason I'm prompted to post. You. Are. A. Star. I'm a technology person, so I am naturally drawn to your videos, a bit like a moth. But it's more than that. You can make the dullest topic, that I have no interest in whatsoever, be interesting. Not just technology, or someone's long forgotten tapes. It's everything. Including the details of your health, which, let's be honest, is usually not something anyone but the closest ever wants to hear about, and even that is often a struggle. There's a point to this coming, albeit slowly... I am a male. Shockingly, I know. I'd bet 98.5% of your audience is. More importantly, I am someone who struggles expressing *anything* personal or emotional, to *anyone*. This will sound very cheesy, and I apologize for that. But you talking this openly to a crowd of people unknown to you in the way you do, is an inspiration. It allows me to think that, someday, I can express intimate details about myself in some way - not as eloquent, but still - without feeling weird and vulnerable. In short, you are a huge inspiration. I hope whatever you are going through is going to pass quickly, and you can get back to normal life and all the stuff you want to do. But, whether that happens or not, know that you are making a difference. Every post you make, is making me think, and every post is making me more confident that I could, one day, do the same. It is not a small thing. So, whatever the future brings I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for being you. Thank you for the hours and hours of entertainment from your videos. And the puppets!!!! Thank you for being an inspiration. And mostly, thank you for being an a stranger that made a difference in my life, just by you being who you are.

G
Gadgetman · April 12, 2025

That’s quite the rollercoaster - honestly, it sounds like you’ve been through the medical equivalent of a labyrinth with a dodgy map and a blindfold on. Your storytelling, even while clearly unwell, is sharp and full of that dry wit that somehow makes the whole ordeal oddly compelling to read. From the GP’s “helpful” ambiguity to the Petri dish legacy (RIP Dave Pyrex), it’s all been handled with the kind of humour that suggests you’re tougher than whatever infection dared take you on. It’s good to hear you’re on the mend, even if it’s under the watchful eye of hospital consultants and antibiotic drips every eight hours. Here’s hoping Monday brings the thumbs up, the return of loo privacy, and food that doesn’t resemble something from a baby food aisle. Also, the part about the messages really hit - shows just how many people genuinely care and are rooting for you. You might rock the Vulcan exterior, but it’s clear there’s a lot of heart under that dry Northern shell. Wishing you a swift discharge, a smooth recovery, and the triumphant return to your own bed (and bathroom). Looking forward to whatever you create next - even if it comes with a slightly scruffier beard.

You've been on my mind every day for more than a couple weeks now, Mat. I'm just another guy a zillion miles away, but I'm pulling for you and then some. Like everyone here, your work has made a tremendous impression on me. I have just the deepest compassion for what you're going through. My wife is an RN and I've written books on family caregiving. My mom passed a few months back from a decades long fight with a plethora of ailments. I am steeped in health stuff up to my eyes and elbows, and while nobody but you can relate to your exact situation, I certainly get it potentially more than most. It's grand to see your sense of humor is intact. And double grand to see you're feeling more than a touch better. From the other end of an ocean, another well-wisher is wishing you very well indeed. Here's to a speedy exit from the hospital. I hope you get to enjoy that lovely backyard Moancave of yours soon!

Paul Hughes · April 12, 2025

Let's just hope that with so many tests and "experts" looking at you now, the odds are in your favour for the outcome of a full recovery. Walking into A&E is quite a traumatic experience these days - and I'm saying this not as a patient, but after accompanying my elderly father after successive falls. Let's hope that this is your last stay in hospital for many years at least.

C
Carl Pollington · April 12, 2025

All the best for you getting out of hospital soon. I've been watching you for years (the videos you upload, not through your living room window) and you have entertained me in a way I thought not possible. I think I must have seen every video at least once, even the ones where you buy something to eat you know you won't like. The world-weary humour is as good as the reviews. I could call you the Alan Bennett of vintage tech repair but that could be taken either way.

E
Ewen McNeill · April 12, 2025

It’s really encouraging that they did find something wrong (with your blood) explaining the low energy levels, and have been able to treat it (with antibiotics and blood transfusions). Hopefully the consultant agrees, on Monday, that you’ve made a good recovery and can go home. I expect they want to be sure the hospital-strength antibiotics have been completely effective before stoping them, rather than risking a relapse later due to stragglers. Thanks for keeping us updated, and for the photo. It’s really good to see you looking more healthy than the past couple of months! Ewen

C

Glad to hear you are on the mend, Mat! I spent a fair amount of time at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, so I'm familiar with hospital stays. I was there so long that the guards knew where to direct friends who came to visit! Anyway, I guess if I had to sum it all up in a word, it was "tedious." But, as the years go by, at least we are able to have the parts fixed and systems tweaked. It wasn't that long ago that we could not. So, we are better off, even if it is "tedious." Take care, and all the best!

Well this is typical. I've just now been telling my sister about your situation and the posts you've been putting up and the worries about what it might be. And she's got into your stuff recently so she wanted to express that her thoughts were with you and wish you well. And what do you do almost immediately after? Make a post explaining about finding an answer for the blood thing and getting a bit better. Well I hope you're happy. I'm going to have to explain to her that her thoughts aren't the reason why they found the infection, it was bloody science. She'll never shut up now. Do I have to add a /s to this? I refuse to add an /s to this. Anyway, good luck Mat - baby steps and all that. My fam's thoughts and hopes go out to you and your fam.

Glad you were able to get some seemingly competent help, you definitely look like you're feeling better in the photo, and your sense of humor is back! One thing that helps me have patience when dealing with medical folks is to remind myself that the only time things move quickly in a medical setting is when something rather bad is happening. It's one place where it's definitely undesirable to be the center of attention and the most (medically) interesting person in the room. I hope you'll be let out soon and get to enjoy the mundane luxury of a shower, using your own bathroom, and sleeping in your own bed. We're rooting for you!

Nice to read the wry Techmoan humour that we know and love in your update. That has to be a sign! Everything crossed for you - here’s hoping you make your escape on Monday.

David Unsworth · April 12, 2025

Wow, you’ve had a proper adventure. Glad to see you’re starting to feel better, hopefully the hospital docs and treatment have sorted out what was wrong.

Mat- seeing this message from you has been the highlight of my week (and it’s been a good week too!). I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling better- I’m sure the road ahead will have some bumps, but it’s genuinely pleasing to see you in good spirits. You’re looking much better too. Please do not rush into things until you’re fully ready! All the best, keep your chin up! Jon

B
Bradley Evans · April 12, 2025

You have a lot of people in your corner pulling for you, Mat! Someday soon this mess will be a distant memory. Until then, take it easy. Best wishes

S
Simon Arnold · April 12, 2025

Also best wishes to "the Mrs" it must be a trying time but we all go into some kind of auto mode during these sort of situations.

G

So glad to hear your recovery is progressing. Once again all these tests and procedures can really help get the ball rolling for your future health. While you’re in there get your PSA test if possible. Early detection is our best defense.

So good to hear that they’re getting the blood infection under control, that’s no joke. Sending good thoughts and hope that you can relax at home soon! Looking forward to your next video! :)

glad what we say means something, wishing you a swift recovery

M
Mike Knell · April 12, 2025

Glad to hear your blood's getting... reranged, maybe? If they've got you on more targeted antibiotics that's definitely a positive thing, and the extra couple of days will hopefully make sure that the infection isn't just sent into retreat but given a good kicking and dumped in the bin never to return. You'll be back at home and duly enthroned before you know it.

R
Retro Graveyard · April 12, 2025

I'm very pleased to hear you are getting better and I hope you get to go home soon. I know all too well about useless GPs, seems you have to take things into your own hands these days.....

J
Jan Höhl · April 12, 2025

I know, that's not really helpful right now, but maybe see things positive: you got a bit of weight of, got a checkup, didn't loose your humor in the process. Get well soon and best wishes from Germany.

M

D

Fingers crossed for you Mat. At least you have your sense of humour and British stiff upper lip to fall back on.

R
Roger Germinder · April 12, 2025

Looking forward to seeing you on YouTube again. I know what you mean about being away from home and missing your bed and your bathroom. One of the perks of coming home. May every day be more better. Be well, May.

Sadly not much happens in a British hospital over the weekend, or it didn't when I was last dealing with it with my mum, but that was 10 years ago. I hope you're Internet connection allows you to while away the hours of boredom with something entertaining, and hopefully home on Monday.

R
RichFX · April 12, 2025

Happy to hear you’re feeling better and you certainly look better too!

M
Michel · April 12, 2025

Well that’s something! My experience with going to hospitals with vague symptoms is that they do a few tests and then report nah everything’s fine and that’s that whether you have symptoms or not. Good to hear you’re doing somewhat better, hopefully some sense of normal will return soon, even if it’s normal for Norfolk. 😁

Mat, I never really post comments because I never have anything useful to say, but I figured I'd thank you for the 10 or so years of one of my favourite things to watch on youtube. Very glad to hear that the health is finally on a bit of an up rather than down, and I really hope things will get better still from here. Take care and best wishes from the Czech Republic.

I’ve been following your content for a long time, quietly and from the sidelines, and I realize now how little we express the good that others bring into our lives. I’ve barely commented before, but I have to say your work has meant a lot to me. I’m hoping for the best possible outcome for you. Stay strong Mr. Mat!

B

J
Josette Reynolds · April 12, 2025

Some good news then on hopefully clearing the infections, you obviously got the "good stuff". Just in case you didn't know it is possible to change GP surgeries if there is another one in your area. I was at a dreadful one in Cardiff but requested in writing with one of the senior doctors in another surgery if I could move. They said yes and it's been a lot better. It's surprising the difference in friendliness and care between two GP surgeries in the same area of a city. Also congrats on being in the good BMI zone!

Will keep my fingers crossed for you, Mat. It’s been a real medical roller coaster for the last few months I’m sure. I’m really glad you’re feeling better - it shows as your northern ‘snark’ is back and it’s great to see. 🙂 Take it easy, even if the hospital food is awful. 🤢

Just a little note to say I’m sending lots of good vibes your way! I hope you’re being treated like royalty at the hospital and that you’re feeling a bit better every day. Your YouTube videos always bring a smile to my face, and I can’t wait to see what you create next — but no rush at all! Take all the time you need to rest, recover, and gather your energy. We’ll all be here cheering you on when you’re ready. Wishing you strength, comfort, and lots of moments of joy while you heal. Take care! Warm regards, David, Stockholm, Sweden

You're a beloved presence in our living room every Saturday as we tuck into our weekly take away dinner. Please get better and make more videos or I'll have to actually talk to my husband over dinner. Jk, obv. But all the same, we love your content and (at least from the weird parasocial relationships we all have with you) you seem like a top bloke. Me and the husband are sending you our best wishes and crossing everything for your potential emancipation on Monday.

S
Simon Arnold · April 12, 2025

It's lovely to read an update Mat. Please keep being positive. Don't worry too much about the eye-to-eye contact (colonoscopy) there's no discomfort after the "what the heck?" moment. There's another type of camera survey which is worse - it was particularly bad for me because my dad said the camera for that particular application was as thick as a Sharpie 😳 he was winding me up of course. Get well soon, as we say and as we mean.

D
David Peaker · April 12, 2025

The picture gave me a good giggle, at least your sense of humour isn't deranged. I hope you're back making videos soon!

L
Lee Lavery · April 12, 2025

I suppose in some ways, the worst thing about being in hospital is the break in your usual routine. Focus on being able to sit in your favourite seat at home and watching a favourite film. I know that would keep me going. As many others have said, if there's anything I can do, let me know (I'm not a million miles away in North Wales, though it may feel like it).

A
Arron Ware · April 12, 2025

You look a good bit better already :) Really glad to hear you're doing better and they've figured out what's going on. Hopefully you'll be out of there and able to relax soon enough, you thoroughly deserve a rest after what you've been through! Thanks for the update and I hope they've patched you up properly soon :) (Sorry if I've gotten the wrong idea of anything, I struggle with large blocks of text but I've gone over it a few times)

F
Funkmon · April 12, 2025

That's excellent. I was one of the guys who was hopeful that the blood issue was related to the liver issue so you weren't fighting two chronic things at once. Glad to be wrong and it's a passing thing. Antibiotics are great. Sucks to be in the hospital. I do bet you could receive get well soon cards from viewers if you publish a PO box. Just never open them and if you're in the hospital again hopefully decades from now tell the wife "Fetch the card bin" and when you're feeling down you can just open a thousand get well soon cards. I have a Petri 35mm camera. I like it but yeah that name is bad by association!

J
James(UK) · April 12, 2025

Yes, I’d like to send a physical card too… mind you, there would be so many, Mat would need his own postcode! How about TM1 MAT? 😉 Regards
