Mat, I am incredibly happy to hear that you're doing better again. Especially with the sense of smell! I remember you talking about it in the Scratch and Sniff showcase (thanks for that by the way, found a new great genre to listen to when I want to chill!) and hearing that, all of the sudden, your sense of smell and taste have returned to normal in almost 10 years made me smile. I am not really a person for parasocial relationships, and lets be honest, I am just one of the billions of people on the internet. But for some reason, your videos have been comforting me for years now. It's been awesome seeing your journey from "channel just showing off nixie watches" to "genuinely respected big channel other people just kinda know". In fact, I must admit, you really have infected me with the whole audio format stuff... Got my first minidisc portable and home player... Been minting my own discs to take with me like a "reverse hipster" for some time now, too. So I suppose I have to thank you for that as well! I was so worried about your health quite a lot and I genuinely had the feeling that if something went wrong, I could've lost one of my favourite YouTubers. Glad to hear you are doing better and are "back to your old self". Nice sweater, by the way. Love the new look! Keep it up! - Matti

Tongue in cheek: You and the 8-bit guy share having a back garden studio, and given you're a Northerner, I'm wondering if you're close enough to Colin Furze to collaborate on an underground bunker build from your studio?

J
João Ricardo Lourenço · April 26, 2025

Hi Mat. You've been a part of my life for almost 10 years now, and I'm very grateful that things seem to be going back to normal. It was heartbreaking to watch that video of yours and realize something was not or had definitely not been okay. 10 years! I've gone to college, finished, started businesses, swapped relationships around several times, moved cities — and, yet, you have been there all throughout. That's something! 🙂 I subscribed just so I could leave you this message and send your my support. Thank you for all you've been bringing to Youtube, and here's to much more! Much love from Portugal!

Hello, Mr Techmoan. I wish you a speedy recovery. I've watched your videos for a long while now. Your soothing tones helped me get over a couple of years of really bad anxiety, and I'm greatly appreciative of that. You weren't the only reason I got better, obviously. But you definitely helped! And, more than once, you've forced me to crack a smile exactly when I needed to. Here's to many more years of Techmoan!

C
CURTISSCOTT · April 21, 2025

Most people who get strep catch it in the hospital. What you describe sounds like you went in with covid or a variant of it and caught strep. You could write a book called The covid strep diet plan. Some group of sadists may be interested in it.

T
Techmoan · April 21, 2025

Fortunately this time I definitely went in without Covid but with a blood infection that had been going on for weeks, ever since the flu subsided in March. I wouldn’t recommend any of it as a diet, but looking on the positive side, the weight has stayed off so far. Then again that could always be a sign of something else.

If you gave me an audio clip from a year ago and one from now I’d have a hard time picking out which one was which. You are sounding much better. My father ended up in the hospital with sepsis last year after having a routine surgery and a totally separate emergency surgery. It was quite a scary time but he seems to have almost fully recovered. His stamina was one of the things he had the hardest time with. You scared me with the Steve Jobs outfit lol. Welcome back home!

One thing though... sudden weight loss... the liver, that is caused by the liver. You know, after they have that sorted out and there is nothing in the way anymore, nothing that could even turn malignant, only after then i would be in a hurray mood.

D

Guess who's back, back again? Mat, he's back, say ra-men! Great to see you looking and sounding so well, Mat. Wow! What wonderful news. I'm so happy for you. I know it's almost certainly absolutely not your thing but as someone who really loves going to top restaurants a couple of times a year I'd absolutely recommend whatever your best local super fancy restaurant is. You may leave thinking what was the point and feeling you wasted money but the uk has an extraordinary amount of Michelin star restaurants and this might be a small window to try one. As someone for whom it is one of the great joys of my life I think it's worth trying even if you end up hating it.

C
Charles Gage · April 14, 2025

Wonderful news, Mat! Having one's health is everything. So glad to hear. Your "hospital at home" is popular here on this side of the pond, as well. In our especially rural areas, we have a good deal of "Tele-Med" where patients have face-to-face meetings on video calls with their primary doctors and specialists. Many have monitoring devices that feed data to doctors for their evaluation. It saves on time, money, and provides care to those patients who otherwise would not receive it, often due to long distances. The internet has made all this possible. Take your time. Don't overdo it. So glad to hear you are feeling better and are back! Chuck

The last update hit us all hard. This one certainly feels far more optimistic. Cold hands and feet have been an issue for me for many years. I literally have a hot water bottle from around September to June. I might look into that cuff thing (and I don't mean through the hole down the middle!) Meals at Leeds weren't much better, though we did get a reasonable Sunday lunch. Guess you just missed that! The toast at breakfast was awful though, like bread they'd waved a Swan Vesta in front of. Toast even has its cooking instructions in its name! Fingers crossed the liver thing is just a result of the infection.

Having known for a while about your lack of taste, I was especially pleased to hear that it returned: I can just imagine the joy of being able to taste things properly after a decade, it must have been a thrill. Obviously the other aspects of your general heath are important too, but it's things like that which can make all the difference to your mental state. Glad to see you back.

Kevin Tangney · April 14, 2025

It is good to hear you are home. Definitely tell the hospital of your issue/idea for a "lost connection" notification between the tablet and vitals monitor. Your tech know-how may make future versions of the home monitoring systems better.

Hurrah! Welcome back. It's great to see you. I am "super private" person and I hated being in hospital. Some of us just don't do small-talk and "camaraderie". I am no doubt a horrible person. You should definitely market your diet - you could be rich!

I would advise against the shotgun approach. It creates a terrible mess and it's complicated to purchase legally. guillotine is a much cleaner apparatus and perfectly legal. That said, I wouldn't worry about using a Wifi without a VPN. Everything uses strong encryption nowadays mail, cloud storage, messengers, updates. A wifi is no riskier than the internet itself. If anything it's the terrible advise you find online that puts you in danger.

I'm so happy to hear you were able to return home. I spent all of 5 and part of another day in hospital with sepsis. Now that I hear you sharing some of your symptoms it sounds like what I was experiencing. I was having chills and my whole body was shaking and I'd also have bouts of sweats. Then normal and repeat. That continued until the third day in the hospital with an antibiotic drip. I found the antibiotics they sent me home with (pills) caused my voice to be hoarse but it was lovely to be back at home.

M
Marvin Thiel · April 14, 2025

I'm so glad you're back home. You've been on my mind a lot these past few days. About the enjoy things while you can thing–you said this before in a video some years ago and I thought about it many times. It definitely made me appreciate things a lot more. Thank you for sharing all this personal stuff, it means a lot.

T
Tunix · April 14, 2025

Congratulations on being back home and on regaining your sense of taste and smell. That must feel even better than winning the lottery, as it’s something money simply can’t buy. You’re looking really well, and your new physique suits you. Just a small note of caution: once your metabolism gets going again, maintaining your weight can become the real challenge. I say this from personal experience, having gained, lost and regained weight several times over the years. In early 2021, during the "event", my BMI got close to 30, which prompted me to make some significant changes to my diet. Over the course of eight months, I lost 20kg and have managed to keep it off since. I’m not a nutritionist, so I’m not in a position to give professional advice, but I’m happy to share what worked for me. It was nothing particularly complex, mainly replacing ready meals with home-cooked food, increasing fibre intake to help with satiety, cutting back on snacks, and following a 16 hour fasting cycle (which includes my sleep cycle) during the working week. As I mentioned, I’m not an expert, so do take it as just one person’s experience. That said, I do believe it’s worth revisiting one's own dietary habits from time to time.

M
Max Hough · April 14, 2025

Me too - my weight has varied spectacularly since I had a partial gastrectomy about 8 years ago - I've gone from 12 stone to below 8 stone and now I've levelled out at about 11 st which is something I'm quite happy about given my age (50s) and other stuff - as a shortie, weight gain affects how I look radically so your advice to Mat is really germane. Certainly hit the spot for me. I'm not a 'fasting' person but I think paying attention to what I shove in my gob has paid great dividends for me! This is a lovely community of followers - I hope Mat realises how much he is appreciated.

I hope you senses stay the way they are. What a unique way to get them back. I had something similar 5 years ago. I had a really bad motorcycle accident. (Not my fault. A 17 year old with no license crossed in front of me and I hit him on my bike at 50 mph, the speed limit.) Because of the insurance pain and suffering payout, I got enough to pay off my condo and pay cash for a 4 year old Mini Cooper convertible, a toy to replace my totaled motorcycle, which do the the condo got me out of that debt. As you said, I don't recommend it, either.

I'm so glad to see this update and to see things are on the mend for you. This remote monitoring tech sounds like a great idea. Spend as little time in hospital as possible. Eric S. Tyrer II · April 14, 2025

Matt, you could read the ingredients of a box of cereal, or even Dave Pyrex's bio! I'd tune it (prob something wrong there). Hospitals and airports are anti-places IMHO, you never really want to be in one and if so, make it quick. My grandfather was in the VA for what seemed like years when i was a kid, those visits were "interesting". The squeeze put on basic care, let alone emergencies etc just are maddening all to to profit off misery. Recent Black Mirror episode "Common People" is worth a watch. It's noticeable from this video that you've got your color back and I am hopeful for your continued recovery. Best wishes from Queens NYC. -est2

Great news! That's really cheered me up today. Seems the docs saw you coming with all of the kit they've sent you home with. Such a great idea though for those are confident using it. Maybe you'll be known as MediTechmoan for a few weeks! My son was sent home with a pacemaker monitor recently - just a box by the bed really that sends back data periodically; think they're pretty common. We did have the option to link it to his mobile 'phone but rather annoyingly it was geared mainly towards iPhones and also select Samsung devices running earlier versions of Android OS and wouldn't talk to it. Very interesting how they connected wirelessly to the pacemaker in clinic though, and not only downloaded all of the relevant data but also put the device through its 'paces' to see the effects if it was 'turned down'. All the best and enjoy some restful days ahead.

Having lost the sense of smell with Covid, I know exactly the joy you are talking about being able to smell again. It took many many months for me to get my sense of smell back, I could taste fine, but without smell all I was actually tasting was the basic things like salty, sweet, bitter etc so no joy in eating. Memories are also wrapped up in being able to smell, and to me it was a very depressing time, especially wondering if my sense of smell would ever return.

Absolutely great seeing you back again in your (future) studio. You look and sound so much better!

P
Philip King · April 14, 2025

Glad to hear you sounding so upbeat. I can't imagine what it must have felt like tasting food again after such a long time - and it's great that being dropped off the clinical trial isn't as much of a problem as a result. Regarding the blood transfusion confusion, I think you're thinking of dialysis - where a machine filters blood in patients with kidney issues. Blood comes out, gets cleaned, and is put back in. With the weight loss - bear in mind that you've probably lost a lot of muscle mass while you've been ill, so you'll probably put on some weight as you become more active, even if it's not in fat. The concept of being in hospital whilst being at home is marvelous really; it's a really positive use of smart technology. I didn't mind my week's stay in hospital following surgery, but then I knew it was going to take about a week - it must be much harder to deal with when you don't have a specific end date. The first few days were the worst - I got nearly zero sleep as they were monitoring my vitals every 20 minutes (!) due to being on morphine. The frequency ramped down to every couple of hours fairly quicky, but as it takes me a couple of hours to nod off at the best of times it meant that my sleep was extremely patchy. My saviour was also noise cancelling headphones and a Steam Deck - doing a bit of exploring in Skyrim allowed me to forget I was trapped in a bed all day. Anyway, all the best, take it easy.
