The french word dérangé means disturbed, I think it sounds a bit better, but granted not much, getting a transfusion and antibiotics is a positive step. It means most likely they're getting your immune system in shape ready for treatment. I'm quite a private person too so i know being on a ward is not very comfortable or easy. I hope you're back home as soon as you can be. My thoughts are with you this week!

That sounds intense and intensely unpleasant. Hang in there, big guy. For what it's worth, the endoscopy and colonoscopy will be a comparative breeze, compared to what you're enduring. It'll all happen while you're asleep. The only tedious part is the diet prior to the latter.

What a community you have created...hundreds of people have responded within hours. I hope knowing that so many of us care makes you feel a little better.

Aha from what I see on the world wide webs, the term "deranged" is more for the liver. It basically means "disturbed liver funcion" which can be seen looking at the the blood test results.

It must be incredibly frustrating and exhausting to be stuck in hospital like that, especially in a shared ward. I hope things start to improve soon and that you get some peace and rest along the way. Don’t worry about replying - just focus on getting better. Thinking of you and sending strength.

O dear. Really wish you luck and you get to get home soon whatever the outcome. About getting a single room, i only once managed to get a single room for myself and there are hospitals that renovate that do go with single rooms. But unfort. it is still often multiple people in a room in most hospitals and thus no real rest that way. In a single room i recovered in 4 days from a surgery to go home, in rooms with others it always took me 11 days. Yes it matters that much! And people can say, yes but every surgery is different. Well i had very varying surgeries albeit all crohns related but 11 days all previous ones and 4 days in having an own room, that says something! If there would be longer episodes you are needed to be staying in a hospital you could try to ask for it. I feel everyone deserves peace and quieth and not to be put like a herd with absolute strangers.

I would imagine that "deranged" is de-ranged (as in out of range) rather than insane lol. There's nothing you can do about the situation. You are just a passenger. Just sit back and let them do their stuff. As you are trapped on the ward and I'm presuming you have watched everything interesting on YouTube, consider getting into podcasts.

Medicine being the bang-up-to-date field it is, this is "deranged" in the old 18th century sense - per OED, "To disrupt the normal state, working, or function of (a system, process, etc.); to cause (something) to function abnormally." Originally came from 13th century French "déranger", to disarrange, and in that sense was often used to refer to "leaving military lines or ranks". So basically I guess they're saying that all your little blood soldiers are not lining up and standing to attention as they should. I hope they get straightened out and drilled into a more disciplined force ASAP.

After a serious motor bike crash iwas in and out of hospital for numerous operations. I only got well once i was out of hospital! I so understand the stress you are under but get the headphones on listen to music books etc and get well. We all need a bit of Mat in our lives

Been thinking of you this week. Sorry you’re having to go thru this. Hang in there - as some others have said, it’s best you’re where you can get the medical attention you need. If it’s any consolation, if you were in the US, you’d have the added stress of “how the f*%k am I going to pay for all this” with our $5000 deductibles and limited overall coverage (whilst paying $1000/month).

Best wishes Mat! I remember when I was 17 and m had my appendix out (at my GP at 5PM, in Surgery at 8PM) and I was stuck there for a week in Feb 1988. Longest week I’ve ever experienced. Neighbours being on the TV was a highlight of the day for me at the time. Jeez. Hopefully with a bit more tech these days time passes a bit quicker for you.

It sucks to be in hospital, but after experiencing both the NHS and US health care, I can tell you you're in good hands. The NHS is excellent.

In an attempt to bring a smile and puzzled looks from your roommates, and having seen this bedside custom in many UK TV shows, I was going to send a nice big bunch of grapes to your bedside. However, I also noticed that the magnanimous visitor usually ate them all in front of the bedridden, so that's what I've done from afar :) Seriously, however, thinking of you often from the other side of this orb.

I know exactly what you mean about the ward situation. I'm undergoing chemo these days, so there have been some hospital stays. A one-armed-man kept me up all night due to him snoring. And the general noises coming from sick people, it's not a pleasant experience. Luckily I've gotten my own room the last times due to getting an infection with little to none immune system. I also discovered that 'deranged' (in my case liver function) is still a medical term a few years ago. It was enough to get me admitted to hospital until the cause was determined. I hope you're out soon. In the meantime, get Mrs Techmoan to bring you your noise cancelling headphones. They're an absolute godsend in hospital.
