Shader Showcase Saturday #10: Self-Building Structures
Hi everyone!
This week's Shader Showcase Saturday is dedicated to Fortnite's self-building structures. Senior Technical Artist Jonathan Lindquist has discussed about this effect back in 2013, during his GDC talked The Inner Workings of Fortnite's Shader-Based Procedural Animations. The talk is very easy to follow, and I strongly suggest it to all the people here who are looking to become technical artists themselves.
I have also featured a few assets in association with the Asset Store, in case you want some extra help to get started:
Toony Colours Pro 2: possibly the best assets for Toon/Cel shading. This could be a good base for the self-building effect.
Fantasy Adventure Environment: A package that goes perfectly with Toony Colours 2, and could be used to recreate the base of some of Fortnite's battle fields.
Amplify Shader Editor: if you are unfamiliar with shader coding in Unity, this visual editor is all you need to create such an effect.
I hope this post will help you get started with procedural animations. If you end up creating something, please feel free to share it.
