Shader Showcase Saturday #9: Interior Mapping
Hi everyone!
During the past few days I have seen hundreds of developers sharing images from the new Spider-Man game. One of the most interesting effects that has captured my attention is the fact that you can see rooms inside every window. It doesn't take long to realise that this effect is faked, and that there is no additional geometry hiding behind the glass.
So I'm dedicating this week's Shader Showcase Saturday to interior mapping, the technique that Insomniac Games has used to achieve such a stunning effect.
I have featured tutorials from:
Joost van Dongen, who originally proposed this technique in 2008
And case studies from:
Andrea Willmott, who explains how such an effect was used in Sim City 5
If you need some more professional assets, I suggest to have a look at these links in affiliation with the Assets Store:
Fake Interiors FREE: a free asset that allows recreating the same interior mapping effect seen in Spider-Man
Amplify Shader Editor: the best tool to author shaders in Unity
TOZ Interior Shaders: an inexpensive solution for interior mapping
Incidentally, I am also writing a tutorial on a simplified version of this technique. I hope it will be released in the next few weeks.
If you have any question or suggestion, I would be more than happy to start a constructive discussion!
