Radio War Nerd #323 — The US Civil War, Part 8: Thomas, Hood & Southern Honor
Recorded: March 28, 2022
After a (too) long break from our US Civil War series, the War Nerd returns with a fresh episode on the final major campaign of the Western Theater in Tennessee, and the two generals who couldn't have been more different: Virginia-born Union Gen. George Thomas, and the "gallant" young Confederate Gen. John Bell "Sam" Hood.

I listen to this episode often for comfort when I despair of my country. What’s left of my desolate kingdom id trade for an ep about phil Sheridan
Celebrating April Fool’s Day at The Lieutenant’s Pump. That’s perfect. I hope it was one of those interactive live shows. I’m picturing the first few rows as a “splash zone”.
Britian as the ringleader in an attempt to break up the US... https://www.lewrockwell.com/2021/12/richard-poe/how-the-british-caused-the-american-civil-war/
Here's a little known big factor in the defeat of the confederacy. Salt. It's been a while since I've read this book, but each horse needed 5 pounds of salt per day, the south couldn't meet this, so their war machine slowly ground to a halt. https://amzn.to/3khbsqL

Chucked my patreon on and saw the Civil War series back, such a strange mind bleach from the current situation.
You don’t think the poisoning was MI6?
Virginia is glorious
I was really hoping this show would keep an objective view on the conflict in Ukraine but perhaps there is too much emotion involved from the hosts. If that’s the case then it’s fine but just come out and say so. The justification for the torture of POW’s at the end was extremely disturbing. Not gonna lie, I was really shocked by that Mark.
One of the generals who broke Pickett's charge, George J. Stannard, has a sweet headstone statue overlooking Lake Champlain in Burlington, VT. Missing arm and all. VT was well represented in the Union Army, but would later sanction more forced sterilizations per capita than anyone else during America's "progressive eugenics" phase that ended mysteriously around WWII. VT's top acolyte in this field, George Henry Perkins, is even tucked away in the same cemetery as Ethan Allen. What I'm trying to say is I should've went to MTL for the meetup, but if you ever come south the drinks and cemetery tours are on me.
Interesting tie in I found (since your post sent me off Googling) part of the reason was the high rate of "deficiencies" in Vermont draftees in WWI.
Ames is right in reminding us that war crime #1 is invasion. Everything after is just a consequence of that
Well if that’s the case I guess these two US soldiers got what was coming to them, right? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/jun/21/usa.iraq1
Please listen to Scott Ritter, ex-Marine involved in the exact same tactics in Iraq being used now by Putin. Then he was an intel analyst after that who, i think, served in Russia for a bit. Was then a UN Weapons Inspector. And he's not a sellout to the MIC. So what he says bears listening on this particular war. And he's been on 3 different interviews just this week alone speaking on this situation in Ukraine. You should have him on. The interviews he's been on are on very diverse podcasters, so he's very approachable.
Please listen to Scott Ritter, a guy who is required by law to explain some things to the parents in the neighborhood whenever he moves.
Bro I’m in houston. Damn.
y’all right tho it’s ass
Great episode i hope you guys have carl on for another china taiwan ep again soon too
That would be awesome, haven’t heard from Carl on here in a while.
YES! I love the civil war series so much!
Whoooo yeah take me to Vicksburg!!!
The belated, futile, revealing intra-Confederate debate to recruit and arm slaves was something I researched as an undergrad. Davis so thoroughly suppressed Cleburne's proposal that documentary evidence for it wasn't discovered until years after the end of the war.
This is some top notch war nerding.
Episode 8 of the civil war? Fk yeah
For some reason last episode gave me the impression we'd only be getting Ukraine stuff for a while but glad I was wrong
15 minutes in and we're challenging the legacy of Virginia? You're out of your depth mister. Have a nice day.
Ahhhh, I will enjoy this. Thank You.
Thank you, George Thomas is a special story! Someone should make a movie about this guy!
Let's go!
About time lol thanks fellas
