How To Order A Beer
it's been like 10 years since I had a beer but I'm pretty sure this is how I remember it

MHL is the champagne of bad decisions drinking.
Schaefer it is
The truth that nobody is ever supposed to speak out loud. . . Beer tastes kinda bad. → https://xkcd.com/1534/
That's why it's health food!
I think, when someone asks for the "best" of something, they want either what the house recommends/charges the most for or what the server recommends. That's obvious, and it takes a supercilious ass to throw that in someone's face like that. It's worse when the person being admonished is obviously inexperienced in socializing. Glad to see Claire and Marten making sure that Gremlizabeth isn't the only person being made a target of sarcasm, and also that she feels like a part of the group.
Minor thing that I noticed, both here and on the main site, this comic is the second labelled 5005. Just thought I'd throw that out there so you can fix it, Jeph, but I'm loving this storyline
Waitiminit: If Moray overdoes it who's to say that...effluent...would come out of her mouth? Enough pressure and it could just seep out everywhere! (And I'm with Marten: I don't wanna see it.)
As someone who works at a microbrewery and is starting a nanobrewery, this is exactly how it is
Ooh! Can you help me start a picobrewery?
Just a white can with the word "BEER" written on it, nothing more.
Let's go do those crimes.
One human alcohol beer please
It’s made from fermented soylent green.
Poor Liz, she looks like she needs a hug!
“Fresh Cut”!
What's your go-to beverage of choice these days? Are you a coffee/tea fella, soda/pop?
I notice no tap handles or bottles on the shelf behind the bar. This being an ai bartender, I wonder if they squirt the drinks from their fingers, like Ray Bradbury’s electric grandmother. https://youtu.be/uaSE1LVSddc
GDI Marie, I’m trying to order at McDonald’s now. 😭
Hey man, congrats on 10ish years!
If Moray was sufficiently inebriated, I'd worry about her just completely oozing into the toilet.
And she ends up on the nearby beach. Reaches inside, pulls out a starfish. "Oh, I hope you're okay; long-chain electroactivated polymers aren't good for you, little guy!"
No beer is best beer.
wellll ... yeah, b/c they are all up there, depending on what you like ... right? Right ...?!?
I love that Marten is the cool, suave, centre of the party
I have had four IPAs which were drinkable. Two were from the Russian River brewerym two were from Rogue
Russian River makes excellent stuff.
Moray is a krill a minute
nice
Indian Pale Ale would be a Commonwealth thing though … and what my lovely spouse prefers … How about Smashbomb Atomic IPA? Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery, Barrie, Ontario (6.0% ABV) “This one is certainly a little hoppier than some, but it also has a ton of citrus, fruity flavour, making it the perfect hot weather brew (or cold weather brew. We’re not picky).”
I'm picturing a beer tap labeled Phytoplankton. They just run a line from the growing vats. Which they have, for reasons.
Ah. I rarely drink beer as I’ve a firm rule about sober driving. I’d recommend a IPA on tap. May they enjoy themselves.
No, no, no IPAs, they're in Canada, not Portland ;)
Congratulations on 10(ish?) years! IWNDWYT
I like a beer that smells like a man urinating in a freshly mowed field while he explains something to me that I already know
So you're an IPA fan?
Savage MHL burn
They shoulda let Moray wear her party shirt 😤
You just want to see her look more naked... . o O (don't blame you).
Pabst Deep Blue Ribbon, then.
It won a blue ribbon!
I’m glad she called him on the “Doctor” part. Good for her.
Okay, so change "best" to "most popular". It may not be the best, but at least people won't give you dirty looks for drinking it... unless you puke in their lap.
“Will that be Baleen or Sea-Sponge filtered?”
I have - early in my drinking days - asked for the best beer they had. The bartender wasn't sure which one was the best, but offered me the one that was a dollar more expensive than the others. It was OK. (These days, I gravitate towards porters, and if they have a non-alcoholic one, I won't be averse. Non-alcoholic beers have gotten really quite good.)

PBR for everyone!
I have heard that Captain Pabst was awarded top prize at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition for his fine brew.
Cubetown is so weird I would have expected Steve to be sitting there too
They must not serve cereal in that bar.
Last two beers I drank (20+ years ago) were Miller. I hate beer. My company sold equipment to Miller, and I was going to four of their breweries to train their crews. I was warned (unnecessarily) that if they took me to lunch or dinner, I had to order a Miller as my drink. I bought a couple to choke down in privacy, so I could get acclimated in case I had to smile while drinking one in the field. (Then the Miller team didn't give me as much as a doughnut. They were super nice, but no food.) Like I say, the Miller folks were nice, but I still hate beer. (The breweries were really interesting, though.)
It'll be fine, as long as he doesn't serve them IPA's. (That's a callback to Bubbles describing the experience of smelling one.)
Bartender, I would like to try a sample of the…International Phonetic Alphabet.
Beer? Vodka on the rocks, slice of lemon please... I lost count of the number of times I had to say "NO REDBULL!"
Oh, and "No... lemon, not lime..."
“I was just thinking…hm…of a flaming rum punch—no, it's not cold enough for that, not nearly cold enough…wait a minute, wait a minute—I’ve got it: mulled wine, heavy on the cinnamon and light on the cloves. Off with you, m’lad, and be lively!”
Well, you're in the right spot. Cubetown's best bar already has plenty of "characters" in it giving the joint "atmostphere".
They would probably have «La Fin Du Monde» if near Québec and if near Saint Pierre & Miquelon «Le Bâton De La Vérité» “The Stick of Truth” and no, as far as I can tell it’s not based on that South Park video game.
Yeah, let's feed the tiny little woman with no drinking experience a few beers named "End of the World." For good reason. That will turn out well.
Marten knows this process like the back of his hand....or the lap of his potentially puked-on pants
Just show Liz a pic of the Labatt’s Streamliner beer trucks of the 1930s/40s and it will become her favorite beer. https://www.wheels.ca/news/the-labatt-streamliner-proved-to-a-piece-of-rolling-canadiana
As a connoiseur of Art Deco, this pleases me inordinately.
Lord... even at 19, I knew better than that. I'd probably have asked for something just because I remember the brand name from TV commercials. Bud....wise.....er. Of course, I would have taken one sip, nearly gagged, and spent the rest of the party ignoring that disgusting thing and drinking a Coke or iced tea, instead.
yeah but these days i have to hold my OWN weird pseudopod thingies out of the toilet drunk or not so ymmv
I love Liz' embarrassed blush following "Iknowthat". But how do they keep phytoplankton out of the beer lines? It just sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
They don't actually pipe the ocean water in from the ocean - they just get it in kegs, and add the phytoplankton from an old plastic container underneath the bar.
It's the champagne of beers. They wouldn't lie about that.
Miller High Life is made from the finest hops grown in Northern France.
Sober for 30 years, but if I'd been able to reach the Genius bar I'd be lying happily on the floor there today.
10 years here, but get a couple in me and I’d be trying that double ocean water with extra phytoplankton…
Here's hoping we get a Joe Canada-esk speech in the next few comics. I'd love to see Jeph's take on it.
Extra phytoplankton? In this economy?
Hey it's a celebration at least she isn't going crazy on the zooplankton
Previously, Marigold and Will had a similar "ordering a beer while knowing nothing about beer" situation in front of Marten.
I lied, Will was not involved: https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1465
I'm going to say it's Moray who is going headbutt Marten in the junk... but her head will just splat and leave a huge wet spot.
Careful, headbutting people in the junk can be addictive: https://youtu.be/3fHl9bxVT58
Been following since roughly Dóra and Tai's first date. Happy to still be supporting you all these years later <3
(loving the accent on the o in Dóra)
Claire looks too cute in this strip.
You don't even wanna know the things I've had to hold out of toilets...
Toilet brushes?
Marten started me reading QC - when it was just Marten and Pintsize - and I love him to this day.
This is pretty accurate to the process of me ordering beer. Though it really needs a bit more failing to hear people over loud conversation/music
My process is "Do you have any yellow ones? That don't taste like brown ones? Or maybe a cider?"
I've been bartending at breweries for about 10 years, and I'd say this is how about 80% of my guests order.
My first time in a bar was at a place known for its LARGE selection of beer on tap - I requested "a lager". And was met with the blankest of stares. 5 years later I was working at a brewery so it all worked out okay. 😝
Marten is about to get distributed computing metamaterial puked on him. He may be the first person who can say that!
Miller? In Canada?
Pretty sure that I’ve had a microbrew that tasted like double ocean water with extra phytoplankton!
I suspect that double ocean water is better than the IPAs that take up most of the shelf space at Berkeley Bowl.
The last time I went hard on the phytoplankton things did NOT end well
