Hey Evan! Has anyone done a count of all individual characters that have appeared in QC? i.e, 1. Martin; 2. Pintsize; 3. Steve; 4. Faye; 5. Sara; [.....]
I'm intrigued at the clear distinction between "automated" work and work that can be performed by an AI. In my world, I'm used to thinking of any work that's performed entirely by a machine to be "automated." But I guess once the machines gain sentience, it makes sense to move that boundary. So "automated" here refers to work done by a non-sentient machine?
A better question, Claire, would be "how many times have you had to do that last one?". Because "how often" is far too inviting for vague answers.

I am in favor of random surname generation for all subsequent humans and AIs. This is how you get such awesomeness as Nathan Explosion and Genevieve Paperclip-Staple.

I misread her as Evian like the French water maker and wondered if all military/security AIs are secretly named after water brands or kinds. In other words I really feel sorry for Dasani.

Marten is my favorite flavor of quark.
The name on this strip is Robot_Names, but Evan here isn't a robot right? Human skin-tone and a visible nose are (last I checked) no-nos for robots in the setting. So presumably it's just a robot-given name, but if that's the case then WHY?

So far, we've only seen a few Cubetown residents, and one who is known to have a randomly generated name. But perhaps they use a random name generator because the population is modely robots? Maybe it will be part of Claire's job to name robots or improve the naming algorithm.
It’s not like most of those scientists INTEND to blow up the planet, it’s just they’re caught up in the experiment and want to see what happens and need to be reminded of catastrophic consequences and why that would be bad.
I mean, how can you know with any degree of certainty what will blow up the planet and what will not until one engages in multiple peer-reviewed double-blind trials?

Cubetown must be a government agency. Only the government uses Excel for things like random robot name generators. I was thinking that xkcdpass (a proper Python program) would work well as a robot name generator. xkcdpass --min 8 --max 12 --numwords 2
Thanks for sharing that! It seems much better suited for passphrase generation than a script that just creates random permutations of words.

I love this dynamic. I know that Marten's responding supportively, and maybe that's all it is, but I'm sort of tickled by the idea of Claire being more and more reluctant to stay and Marten actually wanting to stay for his own reasons. XD

Desire to blow up the world is luckily not often accompanied by ability to blow up the world, even for research scientists.

I lost 82% of my hearing the summer I traveled around as an Evanescent Incinerator groupie.
I smell a confusion about pronouns and gender, followed by Evan pushing back on Marten misgendering them/him/her? (pushing back on there just being an assumption maybe?), accompanied by Claire being like "nononono, *whew* (I guess i have to mention I'm trans), Marten just made a boneheaded assumption" and then Evan being like "lol, i'm just joshing" ? (bit drunk atm, hope that made sense)
Yeah, I kind of had a reflexive reaction at the quick jump from the masculine nickname to feminine pronouns. Definitely enough to leave me wondering if that was a mistake.
I'm just here for the ai name generator now.
