Haven't seen this episode in 30 odd years and had completely forgotten about evil Gangster Del Boy! I'm finding David Jason's accent hilarious but he just about pulls it off...

The worst OFAH episode ever in my opinion. David Jason is hammy beyond belief and Sullivan's usual witty dialogue is replaced with woeful zany sight gags and seemingly endless references to them being Australian tourists. Hope Jason, Lyndhurst etc enjoyed the working holiday because 'miami twice' looked more fun to film ,than it is to watch. Thank goodness normal service was resumed with the episodes that followed, because this one is a stinker.

David Jason playing a comedy mob boss is absolutely incredible. What’s better? David Jason playing Del Trotter who’s pretending (whilst terrified) to be a mob boss. This episode is stand alone genius, and an OFAH classic. In my own humble opinion.

D
Darren · October 26, 2026

In all fairness Rodney doesn’t know anything about the drugs and the murders at this point, del has seen it in the paper he just saw, and had that meeting with the 2 guys, Rodney just saw the guy that looked like del.

There's a story about Rocky Marciano discovering his punching power when he was stationed in England during WW2 when he belted a loud mouthed "Australian" Its generally thought that Rocky actually had a run in with a Cockney soldier and Americans thought the guy was Aussie. Not sure whether John Sullivan had heard this story and used it for inspiration.

R
Red Jelly · October 26, 2026

Is there a different edit of this? I’ve only seen it once many years ago and I could have sworn that I remembered the Bee-Gee getting arrested for drug smuggling at the end, when Mike mentioned that it would be a funny scene to see I was looking forward to seeing his face when it happened but it never did, it was all my imagination.

D
Darren Keighley · October 26, 2026

Limey’s is a name given to old sailor’s who used to eat limes on the boats whilst sailing the oceans to stop scurvy - lack of vitamin C. The Australians also call us limey’s.

G

Thats incredible, I always wondered why they said limey's. Cheers!

I think the Bee Gees were actually Australian but I also think they were fellow Mancunians, doubting myself

B

They were born in the UK, then the family moved to Australia, where they formed the band, and then they returned to the UK to use as a platform for their success.

The godfather version of Del is based on Marlon Brando’s character, Don Corleone. He pulls it off very well.

J
Jamie H · October 25, 2026

Great reaction, thank you. I’ve really enjoyed watching OFAH with you. A few comments from me: 1) Del is completely inappropriate. He would have kissed Pam, he will grope Marlene, he will look at other women. This is all part of who he is-Racquel knows all this. However, there’s no way (in my mind) he would cheat. If he ever got into a position where that was going to happen, I don’t think he’d be able to go through with it. 2) I’ve heard this is one of David Jason’s favourite episodes - but of course it is. Filmed on location in miami, he gets to do his Marlon Brando impersonation. I’d be amazed if this wasn’t in his top 5. The episode itself is a big jump away from “normal” Only Fools, completely let’s go of any semblance of realism. I know some fans hate it. But i think it’s fun and works as a standalone movie/special. 3) the show absolutely could have ended with the birth of Damian. And it kinda did - that was the last season, it was the last time we really see major progression of the Trotters’ story. After this, it’s just a handful of Christmas specials. Each special is like us checking in on the trotters, like distant family members. It’ll be a bit weird because the episodes/stories won’t flow from one to another - worth looking at the release year/gap between each special so you can see how much time has passed. After a few of these (all fun, but they don’t hit the same high as the last traditional episode), they decided to bring the show to a final close with a final trilogy of specials (all aired over one Christmas period). These are brilliant and (I think) ends the whole thing perfectly. A few years after that, they were convinced to bring back the show for another trilogy of specials. I don’t think these were necessary, but I know some people prefer the updated conclusion. Really looking forward to you seeing the final sets of episodes!

So many people comparing episodes or ranking them ... truth is, is that they are all better than when first saw them because of Mike & Jess's reactions. Lovely Jubbly !!

I went to Florida in the 90s as a kid on Virgin in a Jumbo... The first time I flew anywhere outside of Europe, usually you got a crappy small plane where you watched the the movie on a big screen in the middle. However this plane had screens in each seat and had a game controller where you could play Mario World. When we got off the plane all the staff had been trained to go "welcome to the sunshine state" and it did nothing but rain for two weeks.... Was such a crap holiday lol.

G
George · October 25, 2026

The 'Bonetti' phrase Del keeps using for his Italian greeting is from the Chelsea Football Club and England goalkeeper of the 1960's/70's Peter Bonetti. His 'Puskas' was from another legendary footballer of the 1950's called (Ferenc) Puskas , Hungarian who played for the Real Madrid club.

G
George · October 25, 2026

Well done on getting hold of the uncut/free-of-added-laughter track version as broadcast originally. To the critics of the episode remember OFAH is not a real-life documentary or a serious drama with a narrative, it is fictional comedy for entertainment with real elements. This 'spoof-movie' is up there with the best specials with the key word being 'Special' , well written and acted. David Jason is after all only doing a send-up of Marlon Brando in The Godfather. The 'Australian' running joke is brilliant writing and will never be not funny.

Cockneys always used to be mistaken for Australians back then by Americans as Australia was colonized by Britain and was once part of the British Empire until it gained independence in 1901...The reason being the common Australian speaks a cross between Cockney, working class Britain and their own accent. Well that's my theory anyway lol

J
Julian · October 25, 2026

There’s an interesting point to add to this. Ireland was part of the uk at the time and at least a third of the migrants to Australia were Irish. So that would have affected how the accent evolved.

The actor playing Rico Antoni Corone was at the beginning of Sci-fi film SPHERE (1997 ) film directed by Barry Levinson based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name. Corone and Sir David Jason maintained a warm relationship years later, famously reuniting and reprising improvisational scenes together at Only Fools and Horses fan conventions.

Some people saying they aren't keen on this episode, but I've forgotten how much I love it, especially watching with my 2 favourite Floridians reacting to it haha. There's a version of this (hard to find, I think just on one edition of the DVD of it) with a laugh track but I don't think it needs it. *SPOILER, BUT NOT REALLY PROPER SPOILERS ALERT* - So a funny thing, when he says "Bonetti" to the Colombian fellas - Peter Bonetti was a goalkeeper for Chelsea (FC) so was probably the first IItalian sounding word that came in his head. - I watched this episode loads when I was a kid (I'm 33 now) and never noticed Del had the kid's camera as well until you pointed it out, Jess 🤣 Such a subtle joke I've always missed. - And yeah, you were right. That was Fidel Castro in the photo. Loved this guys. Favourite Reactors - very sweet couple, proper great sense of humour and always make the experience of the shows even more enjoyable. I've had a lot of really hard personal struggles lately, but you guys always cheer me up. Big love Paddy from Manchester, England

DERWON GREEN · October 25, 2026

I was really looking foreword to watching with you awesome guys. Warning i'm a local film-maker in Cairns Australia, and have a habit of posting technical and production stuff. - Unlike standard studio-recorded episodes, Part 2 was shot on 16mm film rather than standard videotape, significantly increasing technical and travel expenses for the BBC. Budget was guested around one million pounds in 90's money, but the official budget was never officially published, google won't tell me.

P
Patrick Nicholls · October 25, 2026

1 Million Budget in the 90's, especially for an episode (film-ish) of Only Fools is crazy! Must've been a Co-Production surely, as the BBC using all that is mad for a sitcom 🤣. Guess it was one of the flagship shows though.

K
King Bookah · October 25, 2026

The Caravan Salesman and the Columbian Drug Lord both went on to have roles in "Bad Boys" in 1995... Rico went on to play Buck Savage, Supermarket Cop in "Kenan & Kel" in 97, then appeared alongside the Columbian Drug Lord again in "Truman Show" in 98...Then in 2003 Rico was in Bad Boys II as DEA... All filmed in Florida... Just always fascinated me wondering if those guys all had "Only Fools & Horses" on their resume when applying for those roles...

N
Neil Jarvis · October 25, 2026

I was never particularly keen on this episode but it’s grown on me over the years. My biggest issue is that it lacks the realism and relatability of the usual show. For all the whacky situations Del, Rodney & co find themselves in, there’s always a sense that they’re grounded in reality. This, on the other hand, always felt a bit too far-fetched. That said, taken on its own merits, it’s a fun and enjoyable episode. I’ve learned to just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. And next week returns to the usual format.

R
Rosalind Johnson · October 25, 2026

I was about 12 when this was screened and this wasn't just a Christmas special, it was like a special special. Only Fools the movie maybe. It was just a lot of fun and very much like the fun movies of the time like you said. I think the two parts gave people a traditional episode and the fun episode and it doesn't take away from only fools overall because it's more of a fantasy of your favourite characters in another situation. l love it. Great reaction as ever. Thank you.

I always wondered what the Don was going to bring up with the columbians. They left happy, but the Don said “maybe they won’t be so happy after we’ve had our meeting”. I
Ian White · October 25, 2026

We all know Del's attempts at speaking French are terrible (and his German is not much better) but in the scene with the Columbian drug barrons Del attempts Italian and says "Bonetti". It's a reference to Peter Bonetti the ex-Chelsea and England football goalkeeper. These days English football is full of overseas internationals with 'exotic' names but in the late '60s / early ,70s the name Peter Bonetti was as about as exotic as it got (despite playing for England Bonetti had Italian roots). Not many people in the UK under 50 yrs old wouldn't even understand that reference. (ps, the same applies to Del greeting the restaurant owner with the phrase "Puskas", the Hungarian Ferenc Puskás who was the world's best footballer in the 1950s.

P
Patrick Nicholls · October 25, 2026

Him saying 'Puskas' made me laugh so much. I'm only 33, but am AuDHD so have always deep-dived on everything and spent a lot of my younger years obsessing over football history. Having said that, my Dad's from London and is a Chelsea fan (I'm from Manchester and am a United fan...unfortunately these days) who started going to games in the 50's, so I was always gonna know Bonetti with my Dad always telling me endless stories about them haha. My Dad was at the infamous 1970's FA Cup Final games against Leeds believe it or not. Can't even get or afford a ticket at the Bridge now.

I think this episode is very provocative because of the situation (and this is a reaction channel) truth is, the accent is FINE, del boy is FINE (he's not planning on cheating on raquel - the first 6 series showed him desperate for a monogonous relationship ffs) the shenanigans are FINE. As an OFAH geek this ranks nowhere near the best but certainly isn't bad. It just is what it is. On to the next one!

Jon Read · October 25, 2026

I think it is an underrated episode, it gets better each time I watch it.

M

David Jason is excellent in this. Very convincing

J
Joey Martin · October 25, 2026

Attention. Can the people making comments saying that an American or Americans thought they were Australian, please make it clear whether they are in fact Australian or not. It's an important part of any anecdote of this type but it's amazing how many people miss it out.

G
Gareth · October 25, 2026

While it would be helpful to know where they're from, yes. I don't think it makes any sense that they would be Australian if they said Americans thought they were Australian, though. That's what you'd expect to happen, so there wouldn't be much reason to comment on it. The likelihood is they're from the UK.

Mike's "Stop running in circles!" and "please get out of the water!" absolutely killed me.

I went to California, everyone thought I was an Aussie 😋

J
Joey Martin · October 25, 2026

And? Why stop the story there, were you Australian in the end or not?

S
Stephen Fortune · October 25, 2026

Generally sitcoms don’t work well when they take them out of their usual environment. However this one does for me - really fun - enjoyed it.

A

The gta vice city dlc we never got lol

J
Jon · October 25, 2026

This episode has grown on me so much over the years, I was originally not all that fond of it but I appreciate now for how fun it is.

D
Dave Henshall · October 25, 2026

I agree Jon. It’s a proper change in pace/tone from the usual sitcom larks in Peckham. You can see that John Sullivan was going for a cheesy mob movie vibe with a slice of cool Americana. Jason had fun with this and his accent slipping adds to the comedy imo

A
Alexander Page · October 25, 2026

I love how well Rodney knows his brother. The bored way he intercepts Del’s fist when the club owner kisses his hand.

A
Alexander Page · October 25, 2026

The accent doesn’t bother me. Just like with Mike Tyson, you don’t ask a mob boss why he’s talking funny.

J
Jamie · October 25, 2026

Americans call British people "limeys" because of an 18th- and 19th-century Royal Navy practice of giving sailors lime or lemon juice to prevent scurvy.

A
Andi Main · October 25, 2026

But none of the British colonies had lemon, and their enemies would not give them lemons, which is better for you with scurvy, so they were left with lime, which worked half as well hence British sailors were called ‘limies’

The person in the random photo is Dame Edna Everage a character created and played by Australian Barry Humphries. She was wonderful and incredibly funny

Dame Edna is brilliant

My Sunday morning ritual, cuppa in bed watching only fools and horses. Best day of the week. Really hoping you have a great replacement lined up, but it's going to be hard to top this.😍 Will just have to make the most of what's left. Is it hero's and villains next week?

A
Andy Waller · October 25, 2026

No. Fatal extraction. Pointless episode in my opinion.

k
kristian turner · October 25, 2026

it feels like an episode of walker Texas ranger with del and rodney

O

An 'oofter is rhyming slang for a poofter. (Different times in the 80s when you could say these things).

J
Jamie · October 25, 2026

They are saying noofter. But yeah

A
Alexander Page · October 25, 2026

Trials always go ludicrously fast on film and TV. According to this, the trial itself, which is a major trial with multiple charges, would be held one week after arraignment, and the trial itself was one day, including jury deliberations. The runup to the trial, even after charges were brought, would be months. The trial itself would be multiple weeks, at least a week per murder charge, probably more. Deliberations can go fast though. I think Donna Adelson’s jury came back within 30 minutes.

The suspension of disbelief for a bad Italian American accent is pretty much on par with people who shoot lasers out of their eyes or can swing from spider webs. It's not the worst ever "foreign" accent. That title belongs to Dick Van Dyke doing a Cockney accent in Mary Poppins 😂 I'm from East London and it makes me want to burn my ears off. "Caw bloimay Maaaweee Paaaawpeeens"

L

A

I think the best evidence that Del was planning on cheating was Rodney’s talk with him. He knows his brother, and the fact that he had to be so firm about no women is telling.

J
Jamie · October 25, 2026

Maybe Del deserves a bit of strange

L
Liam Caseyy · October 25, 2026

Was watching Harry Potter last night and up popped trigger i completely forgot he was in it and had a good part in it.

A
Alexander Page · October 25, 2026

Probably my least favourite episode and a bit of a “jumping the shark” moment. There are a lot of positives though. The music is fantastic, and all the business back in Peckham with “Trotter’s pre-blessed wine” is great.

J
Jamie · October 25, 2026

It can't be jumping the shark because there's so many brilliant moments to come.

I’ve been to Chicago and was asked if I was Australian. I can’t talk I can’t tell a Canadian from an American. EDIT FOR JOEY 😊 I am English, you make a valid point.

One of my fav eps! I’ve seen it sooo many times, yet I’ve been real excited to see you guys react to it :)

R
Rob Walters · October 25, 2026

Yes it does. When I was in America in 2011, I did a west coast tour (L.A, Phoenix, Bass Lake, Las Vegas and San Francisco) and virtually everytime I spoke to anyone they thought I was a fking Aussie! I'm from the Elephant in south London and it got well annoying after a while. I wouldn't mind but us south Londoners don't sound anything like them. Funnily enough, those from the south understood me perfectly and didn't ask if I was from Australia!
