Kevs speech about him failing because he didn’t try get me every time! It’s such wonderful writing 🥺🥺🥺

I'm watching this tears streaming

I’m convinced if it wasn’t for Stephen merchant, we’d have never heard of Ricky gervais.

A
Alan Shephard · September 21, 2026

Ricky Gervais is better at making me cry than just about anyone... My goodness there was a lot of emotions in that episode..

N
Nathan · September 20, 2026

I'm not ashamed to cry to this 🤣

P
PheebHello · September 20, 2026

I just feel nothing, all I see is Ricky and don't buy it.

S
Scott · September 20, 2026

Why bother watching this reaction then? I enjoy 3-4 of Mike and Jess’ shows, not all their choices. But I don’t go on the shows I don’t like and say something negative about it. It is what it is. I’m blabbing on…

D
Daryl · September 20, 2026

The brilliance of Ricky Gervais to take you on a an emotional rollercoaster. All those people who said that he's taking the piss out of people with disabilities haven't got a clue what they're talking about and don't understand context and nuance.

G
Graham Mulreay · September 20, 2026

Here's a weird thing that happened and feel free to fact check me on Twitter, you'd have to dig through comments though from years and years ago Wed, 16 May 2012 at 18:20. When Ricky was writing Derek he reached out to his audience and asked everyone to ask questions about Derek, it's a good way to write a story because people will ask questions that you hadn't thought of for the story. I asked Ricky: Does Derek have a family, Mother, Father or siblings and he actually condensed my message and wrote this back. rickygervais Ricky Gervais “@Mulreay: Does Derek have a family? Yes. Everyone he knows. His mum died recently. His father left when he was very young. I like to think I gave something towards this episode, even if he already had that scoped out, but why respond to me if he did?

Keith Pratt · September 20, 2026

I don't think Karl was always saying exactly what he wanted in this, because back in the XFM days and when they did the podcasts, he believed in ghosts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSr5tH8857I

N
Nicola · September 19, 2026

It's ok, I was planning on crying my eyes out tonight anyway... 😭😭... Your emotional reactions get me every time.. Kevins self reflecting on his life and being vulnerable is very touching and for many people is very relatable.

Until recently I was a Carer and the person I looked after also had parents who very rarely saw him. They did feel guilty about it, but they just weren't strong enough to cope with him. I think when people dismiss this show as being contrived to make people cry via cheap methods, they are in fact revealing their own lack of depth.

C
Carol · September 19, 2026

I must remind myself if I'm going out shopping to not watch one of your reactions beforehand. I was daft enough to apply mascara before watching this and ended up looking like Alice Cooper! Wonderful reaction though xxx

t
tania P. Bear · September 19, 2026

Wow, what a ride. Watching this alone, was really emotional, but now it's like, I get emotional, then you get emotional, so I get even more emotional. Don't get me wrong though, it makes it even better. Thank you both, so much, for always keeping things real.

S
SomeBSName · September 19, 2026

It definitely seems like Ricky told Karl he can say what he wants when he's asked a question.

S
SomeBSName · September 19, 2026

I wander if more people would like this series if no one knew who wrote it especially episodes like this, there's very few jokes in this particular episode.

S
Shuayb · September 19, 2026

ngl i've been going through a rough time - and I really appreciate how open you are with your reactions - it really helps me through things whether I'm ugly crying or crying with laughter - just wanted to say thank you 🙏

T
ToeJam · September 19, 2026

I knew this episode would make you both an emotional wreck, which is why you should watch This is England and the TV series afterwards :)

M
Mem · September 19, 2026

If you notice when derek runs to his dad and they hug Derek pats his head like Joan use to pat his for comfort ❤️

M
Mark Rudd · September 19, 2026

This is killing me watching this today. My dad got rushed in to hospital on Monday and he doesn’t recognise me when I visit. It’s killing me and I’m too weak to deal with it 😭

S
Shuayb · September 19, 2026

So sorry to hear this. Wishing your dad, you, and your family strength and comfort 🙏

A
Andy R · September 19, 2026

Just watched Peep show 'Chaiman Mark' and they mentioned monkey on a pig in that.

J
Jon Read · September 19, 2026

You guys should watch Life's Too Short which includes Ricky and Stephen and Warwick. There are 8 episodes in total (7+1 special). I found it one of Ricky's best shows personally.

K
Kilij - · September 19, 2026

MUFF 🙏

Tommy Jack Music · September 19, 2026

For people who didn’t connect with Partridge, I must say Mikes story about the baby turtle was probably the most Partridge thing I’ve seen on this channel 😂

M
Mike Taylor · September 19, 2026

I remember struggling with Derek originally, then this episode hit me like a sledgehammer and I got the whole thing. Subsequent episodes carry forward a lot of the momentum taken from this inflection point.

S
Simon Scott · September 19, 2026

And people complained about Derek. It's a great show

R
Rucky Steve · September 21, 2026

Yeah, I don't understand all the hate, but I guess it's just not for everyone. You can accuse "Derek" of lots of things; self indulgent, sickly sweet, overly emotional, etc, but if you can watch this episode without a flicker of emotion, then I truly feel sorry for you. It must be a sad existence.

S
Sanj · September 19, 2026

yeah like so many people in the comments, it is Saturday morning in the UK. And we had work drinks at 5pm for my colleague who had their last day yesterday and then after that I had a house party with some friends that saw me get home at 4am. So needless to say I am in a vulnerable (lets just be honest hungover) state. And this episode made me cry all those years ago when it first aired and it has made me cry every single time I've watched it since. A joy to be able to share that with you two, who I just love to watch my favourite shows with. I cry with you guys and laugh with you guys. Thank you for your reactions and for eveyrthing you do. (p.s. I don't comment often but I watch a lot (ricky/smerch stuff and gavin and stacey!!!) and love you guys a lot)

C
Crofty · September 19, 2026

Fun fact, this was meant to be the end of Derek, just like After Life was meant to be only one season but they were both so popular Rickey was force to carry it on.

C
Caine · September 19, 2026

My dad went to prison for kidnapping and torturing a young boy when I was a toddler. Never missed him, my stepdad is my dad as far as I'm concerned. I did used to get jealous of my friends that wished their dad was in their lives, I wished mine never was.

S
Sanj · September 19, 2026

damn, you had it rougher than most. Thank you sharing that. My dad was in prison the night I was born so that was my welcome to the world. It's a particular type of bullshit as a child to spend the night in the police station being interviewed because of something my dad did and doing those interviews at 2am in my school uniform becasue I know I will have to go from the police station straight to school at 8am.

B
Bamboozler09 · September 19, 2026

I'll never forget watching my Dad leave as he kissed us goodbye. He was empty, I knew even then as a kid he didn't want to. My Mum couldn't help push him away, for it's who she was. Making his life too difficult for him. As I grew up, and now at 31, we are closer than ever. Because I understood that he had to go, even if he didn't want to. The house was too noisy and chaotic as it was, always being sent somewhere else so I'd be away from it. It's really is a shame the stories and impressions people give their children, to sometimes villainise the other. Tell your Dad you love em, they'll love it

J
Jay Jay · September 19, 2026

I knew this episode would break you😭 It still does to me all these years later❤️

D
Danny · September 19, 2026

That old picture of the kid with the monkey really was Ricky as a kid. He had shown it on Twitter

T
Tim · September 19, 2026

I'm just pleased they had Coldplay playing for half the episode, or I wouldn't have known how to feel.

R
Richard · September 19, 2026

I also forgot this episode was so emotional. The writing of Derek is so good.

K
Kathy Hills · September 19, 2026

I first watched Derek so many years ago that I had forgotten this episode. What a start to a Saturday morning. Gervaise is a bloody genius. AfterLife is still my favourite of all his work, but the writing AND the acting in this episode is right up there with the best there is. Fabulous episode. Cried most of the way through it. And loved your comments at the end Mike and it is wonderful to see the love you two have for each other. As Dumbledore once said: "Love is the most powerful force in the world." This episode of Derek proves how true that is.

s
steven bell · September 19, 2026

fully expected alot of crying in this episode.

P
Paul wardale · September 19, 2026

Me and the wife who doesn't particularly like gervais were in floods of tears at the end of this episode haha just like you two

P
PheebHello · September 19, 2026

I remember in 2020 speaking to a 36 year old woman who had been with the same guy since she was at school. She had four kids with him and I walked my dog around the woods for a couple hours talking to her randomly. All she could say was she felt like his mother, but everything she was explaining was she was the mother to her kids and she lumped him in there for some reason :S So bizarre to me and I just told her exactly what I thought... It just seemed like she wanted to get boned by a load of guys cause she was bored. Any way she didn't talk to me again and I see her now every other month with a new guy and she's always got dyed hair and has her nose pierced :S I just think you ruined your family for that? So weird. Poor kids, you could have at least waited until they're all adults. She told me to join her husband's fan club... The weird thing is she didn't express anything to him, expressed more to me and how is he meant to know without you telling him?

This is why we all wanted you to watch this show. It’s a masterpiece. Never fails to hit you right in the gut. This time I was on the treadmill in the gym trying not to become a broken wreck!

'a turtle ate his baby' - ironically saying that with Alan Partridge timing 😂

S
Sarah · September 19, 2026

I wasn't expecting to cry into my tea and toast today. A thought provoking episode and beautiful reaction.

M
Matt Draper · September 19, 2026

Literally not ready for that much emotion on a Saturday morning. Ricky Gervais is a genius! Happy Saturday guys

S
SKG · September 19, 2026

Here's the thing with this show - it's full of "here's the sad piano and compilation of old people to remind you to feel sad" it's full of talking heads telling us how to think and feel. It's full of Ricky's 'personal social political opinions', it's full of lazy writing (disclosure im a huge Ricky fan) BUT, in the end, when I hear Coldplays "tears stream..down your face"... I have tears streaming down my face. When Kev says he is a coward because he didn't try. Well, that makes the show worth it. Simple as that.

E
ElvisLee · September 19, 2026

If that was all it was, do you really think it would evoke the kind of emotion it does in Mike, Jess and the rest of us? Do you not realise you're insulting people by implying they are falling for a cheap trick? I do not wish to be nasty, but I see this kind of thing aimed at Ricky Gervais stuff quite a lot - Namely people unable to see the depth in his work due to their own lack of it. It's not so much lazy writing as it is a lazy interpretation of it. These are very human stories that people can relate to, hence why Mike and Jess are able to add so much in their reactions to these particular shows. You get more out of things when you have more to put in, and the more a person has to put in, the more likely they are to see much more than just sad piano and a compilation of old people.

Dave Treanor · September 19, 2026

h

what an ep this one is. can’t wait to watch.

M
Macca C · September 19, 2026

Best ever Gervais episode of anything.

L
Lew w · September 19, 2026

I totally disagree. As a straight drama it would be great episode. But Gervais is a comedian, and this episode lacks humour. Its my least favourite 🤣
