I really like Derek, and I love your genuine reactions. I've watched them all, and getting to see them again "with you" both, is cool. I don't know what the complaints were about, if it's the character of Derek, his disability is handled tenderly and properly, it's not making fun of people. The whole message of the show is kindness, and treat people kindly.

M
Michael Nejrup Poulsen · September 26, 2026

It's fantastic that you are giving Derek a go. It's a phenomenal series. Don't listen to people who only complain. They don't bring anything constructive to the table. I was hooked from when you started sealing After Life, my favorite series. Keep up the Good work 👍❤️

Michael D · August 20, 2026

Well said Mike. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but no one has the right to assume their opinion is correct. It’s quite easy to just not watch something you don’t like or might not agree with. Leave everyone else to make their own mind up and stop being offended on other people’s behalf 🙄

C
Crofty · August 18, 2026

So glad you're watching this, you're going to love it!!

A
Alan · August 18, 2026

Here’s a thought from the left field…… Joe Wilkinson and David Earl had a podcast called Gossipmongers, it’s on YouTube. I’d love to see you react to that, it’s one of the funniest things Iv ever heard. Even if you don’t react to it then you should at least listen alone. You will not be disappointed.

C
Chris Harper · August 17, 2026

I don’t understand people complaining, i don’t like peep show so i haven’t watched you guys reacting to it, no problem for me, father Ted wasn’t for you guys and I respect that although I loved it, I’m watching Derek for the first time with you guys, I await my own thoughts on this one which is what counts to me, and I respect your reaction which often makes the whole thing better if that makes sense

E
Elaine Beattie · August 16, 2026

I see the sitcom of derek as not factual but if it was that would be great cause the majority of old folks home aint and we will be there at one point maybe in time and if there is a one kind soul to look after you the bless all is not lost

s
steven bell · August 16, 2026

I cant believe the people who take offence to this show. Ricky didn't right Derek to make fun off Special needs. Not 1 time in this entire show does he poke fun at Derek for the way he is infact its the opposite he showcases just how kind and thoughtful Derek is. (if i remember correctly their is in interview with Ricky who said he doesn't have special needs he is juts an eccentric person)

P
Pony6339 · August 16, 2026

Anybody who has a problem with this show really needs to get a grip, they are the sort of people who have nothing going on in their own lives worth talking about so they pick faults with anything to make themselves feel better. This show is brilliant and highlights the hard work people who work in these places do.

P
Pony6339 · August 16, 2026

Ricky’s mum worked in care homes and he used to go along with her (my mum did the same) this is where he got the idea from.

A

It was Derek that introduced me to Ludovico Einaudi’s music. Perfect when you just want a bit of relaxing piano 🎹

B
BigChanChan · August 16, 2026

Let's be honest... The only people offended by it are those that oppose his political views!... I've noticed that it's been getting worse on social media over the last few years... They can't separate the art from the artist, so they try to find the slightest angle to give them a chance to bash the celebrity, just because they are blinded by irrelevant and irrational ideology!

V
Victoria G · August 16, 2026

As an autistic girl and a single mum of two autistic, non-verbal children, 5 and 7, I can state that nothing about the concept of this show offends me. It's beautiful and funny. The last scene made me so emotional, and I love that Ricky was putting these important concepts in the lime light! Not to defend the dude.. I just can't help wonder that if the guy had backed up his reasons as to why he was asking the question of Autism, he'd quickly be understood and not attacked. If Derek did have a formal diagnosis, the council would be legally obligated to provide workplace adjustments to support him. Perhaps he seeked confirmation that he was not being exploited, or even manipulated into cheap free labour. They could also provide funding and puteasures in place to protect him. I know that wasn't the message Ricky was going for, but I just believe it was fair to note in regards to real life similarities. Love the reaction Mike and Jess xx

D
David Tait · August 15, 2026

Kev is my favourite character of all time 🤣

S
Smiffy · August 15, 2026

A lot of people seem to completely misunderstand the message behind Ricky Gervais’ Derek before even watching it. It isn’t about mocking people with learning disabilities; rather, it highlights the difficult circumstances created by cuts to public services and the pressures faced by the care system in Britain by 'elites' who only have their own interests at heart. People like Hannah, who represent the compassionate and selfless care workers who dedicate their lives to supporting some of the most vulnerable people in society really are angels who get no where near enough recognition.

S
Stuart · August 15, 2026

Karl always said he doesn’t enjoy acting as he felt he wasn’t good enough at it and in this episode you can see him stumble his lines a little when going off on the suit bloke. For me I always say tv and films are always too perfect, in real life people do miss speak and say things wrong… I think it’s such an authentic scene well done Karl 👏

B
Ben Black · August 15, 2026

I truly think this is one of RG's best works. It isn't about Derek - that character is just the vehicle. This is about compassion. Humans aren't the only animals to show compassion, but - we do recognise it when we see it.

J

S
SomeBSName · August 15, 2026

Whenever questioned in interviews Ricky has always said he doesn't understand why people believe Derek has a disability or why they're trying to diagnose a fictional character. He wasn't written with a disabliity, it's people watching who have diagnosed him instead of just enjoying it.

L
Lolly · August 15, 2026

M
Mark Findlay · August 15, 2026

Derek for me is some of Ricky's finest work. You can see the evolution in his writing and performance from The Office right on through. This was a performance that should just how talented of an actor he is. for all the haters, I assume that you all hate Dustin Hoffman and every other actor who has portrayed someone with disabilities. I said it before, all you do is show your immaturity and lack of understanding to whats actually happening. another example of feelings over facts because you have twisted a narrative to fit what you want it to be about.

I did care work before having to give it up when diagnosed with Heart Failure. Wasn't easy feeling like I was letting people down who I grew close with. The way people talk about the care sector, in and around it, it can be very... cold. Like the pharmaceutical world. It's a business, and it's heart breaking. I am very glad they did this, because there is so much warmth and joy around the pain and the losses that come with care work.

J

L
Lolly · August 15, 2026

People are allowed to dislike or critique things. Art is subjective, not everyone is going to like the same things. That's what makes this a wonderful and interesting world to live in. Dismissing opinions that don't align with your own makes you more like that council inspector.

K
Kathy Hills · August 15, 2026

Your comments on the teeth made me chuckle and remember what happened one night when I was working in a geriatric ward in a hospital. Patients were four to a room (with curtains obviously) and one old lady sadly died during the night. As Auxiliary workers my friend and I had the task of laying her out and she had no teeth in, so we took those that were on her bedside table and put them in her mouth. In due course the porters came and wheeled her body away and we drew the curtains back and tidied up the ward. When we came to do the morning round, the lady in the next bed to the deceased complained that she couldn't find her teeth and we realised in horror that we must have put her teeth in the poor lady who had died. And was now gone. Never forgotten that one.

D
David · August 15, 2026

What is so rewarding about the show is not only the superb writing, it’s the way it opens our eyes on a world that is hidden away to so many, until you go though the process of either being there or having a relative who lives there. It is a situation that will doubtless happen to virtually all of us, who don’t have endless pots of money, and for that reason alone, it is stand-alone spectacular television. To be able to inject humour into it is a wonderful bonus!

K
Kathy Hills · August 15, 2026

I have never watched this before but am so glad I am now. I cared for my Mum until she died 2 years ago. I am both laughing and crying watching it. The underlying premise of kindness and warm is just so lovely. Especially brave doing it with characters who tend to be ignored and/or forgotten in today's society. I am surprised and very impressed so far.

Neil's Old Radios · August 15, 2026

Slightly off topic but there is a 3-part series on the UK archive channel U&Gold at the moment, where Joe Wilkinson and David Earl go looking for the locations of their favourite sitcoms. The ones they do are Porridge, Fawlty Towers and The Office. Not sure if this is available in the USA but Mike & Jess might be interested in watching the last two. There are some spoilers (it's assumed the viewer has seen all the shows anyway) so probably better to skip the Porridge one in case they ever do it.

So happy to see you guys reacting to this great show. 🥳💪 Ricky was recently asked who his funniest person is and he said David Earl. He is great 😁

N
Nicholas · August 15, 2026

Loved this reaction. I've seen most of the shows you react to, but I've never seen Derek, so I'm watching alongside you guys. The people that complain just don't understand a concept that Ricky uses in shows like this or Afterlife: PURPOSE. There's a purpose, and it's to show things that very little people actually pay attention to. In this case, the elderly, the sick, the disabled and the bureaucracy involved in social care. He especially shows this in that scene about being tested for autism: "will I still be me", he asks. The answer is yes, so he points out there's no point in the test then if it doesn't change anything about the care he gives. Ricky always points out amazing concepts like this in his stand up, and when he makes these shows, brings the concepts to life. Unfortunately there are many people that like to think they can dictate what other people reacting to shows can and can't react to. Worrying trend that they think they can try and mold other people to fit what they like and believe. Like people say: don't like, don't watch.

L
Lolly · August 15, 2026

My issue with this show and afterlife isn't the chosen subject, it's the pontificating and lack of subtlety. The idea of a sitcom set in a nursing home is a great one. It didn't need a Derek or a Kev. We don't need to be talked down like David Brent trying to save some ethiopians. I'll leave this comment on a positive. I absolutely love Kerry Godliman as Hannah and I think the show would have been far better if Derek and Kev were nurses/care assistants because nurses/care assistants have the best and darkest sense of humour.

R
Richard · August 15, 2026

Great message at the beginning Mike - there are some shows that I’m not interested in watching with or without reactions - so guess what- I don’t! Pretty simple stuff. Schedule is PACKED with great stuff at the moment. Loving the content.

I'm with Ricky, especially with novels: chapters titles are really annoying when you want to read a novel for the 2nd... time as they take you away from the present and are a spoiler to some extent as they take your mind into recalling much of what happens in the chapter, or episode. They are often just the writer being self-indulgent and enjoying a pun rather than being empathetic and letting the reader or viewer enjoy what unfolds. Even on the first viewing or reading they often give too much away and lead to people correctly guessing what happens, dulling the enjoyment.
