Derek - S1E0 'The Pilot'

Coming into this late. can't understand how there'd be negative comments about this show. One of Ricky's best works, and a heartfelt reaction from you both to the pilot. Shout out to my mum, and her fellow nurse (sorry dont know her name, a lovely fijian lady) who were the two nurses to stay on the top floor of the Fairhaven nursing home during the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, comforting the oldies when the whole place was shaking and could have collapsed. Derek would have stayed up there too.

Ricky Gervais has this incredible knack of making you laugh your head off & cry your eyes out multiple times in half hour 😂😭

I think the way Ricky wrote this series is pure genius: He very quickly establishes the main characters and has us empathising with them immediately. Not an easy task. I love how he weaves the comedy and tragedy of life through the eyes of pure innocence, and I thoroughly enjoy watching along with you both. Thanks guys! Much love.

I love you guys . Unfortunately I’m a bit miffed how ‘ I’m Alan partridge’ won or was close to the top of a vote last year.However you guys decided to start with ‘knowing me knowing you’ which obviously makes sense but lot of people started there Alan Patridge journey with ‘ in Alan partridge’ then later discovered his earlier work which a lot of people agree isn’t nearly as good. I love you guys but it’s disappointing you havent visited this show yet it’s fantastic. Imagine there was show with Ricky Gervais in before The Office which was garbage and because you didn’t like it you refused to watch Office. That’s the way I see it. Anyway sahloooom

These shows have heart which is what makes them ring, def compared to other shows

Just found out that Lucy Davis who played Dawn in The Office has terminal breast cancer. So so so sad 😞. Sorry I know this isn’t The Office but I thought fans of Ricky’s work would want to know. In her statement she has said ‘As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be the rest of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can. I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there’s a lot I have learned from it, and I’m grateful for that.’ Just devastating news.

Loved watching this the first time around and it’s even better watching it with you guys. I can sometimes feel a bit lonely watching things as my husband has totally different tastes to me, which is fine of course, but I miss out on talking about it or sharing it. As part of this amazing community, I feel like I get to share in it. Thank you, Mike and Jess and the whole community who make this a great place! Hopefully the comments section can stay as it’s another way of sharing. I think if we all remember that our opinions are just that- opinions and not facts- we can keep everything positive and respectful ❣️

I like all the Ricky shows and all his characters but Derek is my favourite because it's like Derek, kind, unassuming, funny, real and full of heart.

This is my fave of Ricky's solo writing projects and I much prefer it to After Life which was too stagnant for my liking. Kev is some character in this and I love him and his arc. Hope you enjoy the ride.

I was not expecting to see a young Roy Kent in this! (Any Ted Lasso fans here?)

Wow, never seen this show as always found it distasteful but have to admit I’m hooked from the pilot! 😅

This isn't my favourite Ricky Gervais show, but I HAVE watched it right the way through and it did grow on me. Somehow you can't help warming to Derek. Not a patch on AfterLife, but it shows what a fantastic actor Gervais is, because I kept forgetting it was an actor playing Derek. And I enjoyed watching you react to it and enjoy it. I look forward to watching it through with you.

When it came out on tv I had my doubts but loved it when I watched, rollercoasters of emotion and humour.. thank you 🙏. If you don’t like, don’t comment.. thats all I do, plenty of reactors I skip shows with.. give and take.. ❤️

Just saw Tom and realised another good show to react to is Ted Lasso which is a American show with an English and American cast.

I love Derek

I hated this show back in the day for the same reasons as people are mentioning here, but I gave it a second chance recently, and have completely changed my mind. It's not as cruel as people are making out, its quite the opposite. There will be tears...

Loved that first episode........ never seen it before but Gervais is so good at pulling on the heartstrings.

I didn’t like this show at first but I kept trying and ended up loving it. It happens.

Don't know if you guys watched Ted Lasso but Brett Goldstein who plays Tom is one of the main characters in it, and won an Emmy for it. He also writes for the show too. If you haven't, I think that is one you would both like.

Mike - absolutely spot on, as there were obviously many scenes that had to be redone due to Ricky corpsing. After you’ve finished Derek, the outtakes are definitely worth watching.

Love this show, Karl was 100% told to just play himself haha. When he showed Derek that he fixed the painting really got to me

I think we now get an idea of the shows they like. Comedies that show moments of human emotion. Derek is perfect. Wonder how they are going to react to Kev 😊

This show isn't always the best written or filmed, it's not the funniest comedy or the most hard hitting drama, but it is a very accurate snapshot of a small sliver of society and at times it has a huge amount of heart.

I actually haven't seen Derek, and I'm a huge Ricky / Karl fan, and Steve but not sure he has anything to do with this. I've seen parts of it and get the premise. I've lived my whole life with an Aunty (can only really say yes, which makes lunch and tea time almost never ending) and Uncle (had the mind of a child RIP) who are similar to Derek (from the bits I've seen) and they both have wonderful senses of humour in their own way. I don't think it's right for people without disabilities to say what we can and cannot view or find amusing.

Love derek and kev is the reason i wont put my mum in a home lol. This shows the troubles of struggling care homes too its not just to give karl a job despite the comments.

It gets even better!. Its a heartfelt series. To everyone suggesting this for months against all the others against it, 1-0😊. People angry in the comments about this show miss the point. This show brings awareness to disabilities and to care for the old and vulnerable. @jess@mike it's a wonderful show, you will love it. And your enjoyment is what's its about, not our selfish wants for you to put up with shows you can't get in too.

As someone who has worked in a care home, I think they went about saying goodbye to Joan in the perfect way. It feels so real, and is so close to the reality of what actually happens. Also this is a first time watch for me, and seeing Brett Goldstein in this after seeing him in Ted Lasso was wild

As you can imagine the outtakes for this show are excellent! So that gives you something to look forward to once you've completed the series!

I’m glad Derek won this poll. I’ve watched the series a few times and always enjoyed it, but this episode hit a little harder on this occasion. My mum passed away in a care home last year, I was by her side. She had been ill with dementia for a long time and didn’t know any of us any more, but she was still the same person to us really. During that difficult period leading up to her passing, the care home staff held us all together and couldn’t do enough for her or for us as a family. They obviously won’t be reading this but I want to thank them and all the other selfless people who do that kind of work around the world. You have no idea how much it means to be there at times like that.

Glad to see this won the Poll and I genuinely think you’ll both enjoy it due to you enjoying the other Ricky Gervais shows. He tends to write the characters that he usually has actors he wants to play each role. I think that’s why he reuses Actors and Actresses he’s worked with before. Personally I don’t see it as a piss take of Disabled people. I think it shows the sweetness and innocence in them and I also think it shows the sadness in growing old with no family or family that sometimes bung they’re elderly relatives into a nursing home and never visit them. It’s a comedy with sweet moments. It’s not for everyone but I do think any of the Ricky Gervais fans in the Subscribers will enjoy it and I think Mike & Jess will too. Plenty of other shows for people that don’t like it to watch.

Gervais best work in my opinion, glad you’re doing this. A lot of people did get butt-hurt at the time it came out around him playing a mentally handicapped person

This kind of video is what YouTube was made for, and people like us have ruined it; is a level of self-awareness that I just couldn't handle at 7:30 on a Saturday morning. Chest clutchingly funny without even really trying to be. Now recovered, back to the show.
