The book was originally just one book, later the 3 separate versions came out but it was originally one very large book!

Tolkien was a devout Catholic, and he took a lot of inspiration for this story from the New Testament. Basically, the fellowship are the disciples. Boromir was Judas. Elves are angels. Sauron is Satan. Gandalf is Christ. And so on.

The words "hobbit" and "halfling" are basically interchangeable. Hobbit is more the proper noun of the race, whereas halfling is more just a description.

The monster of the lake outside of the Moria entrance was a kraken, as in "Release the kraken!", if you're familiar with that phrase.

Size variance for the hobbits and dwarves vs other humanoids: simply force perspective. The Hobbit was written first, more from bedtime stories JRR Tolkien told to his children. The Lord of the Rings trilogy came later and evolved even during its writing by Tolkien.

As a kid, I saw the Ralph Bakshi animated Lord of the Rings first... but he never finished the full story and at that age I wasn't much of a reader. Luckily my library had the full BBC radio drama (which starred Ian Holm as Frodo) so I listened to the full story. I did eventually read and reread the books many times. They even had a class at my highschool that covered the trilogy and counted as an English credit (easy A). Of course we all dreamt of some day there being a movie, but we never imagined it would be anywhere near as well made.

You know there just might some crossover between Star Trek fans and LOTR fans so I think you are onto something. Btw it’s hilarious you like know every character name going in except the guy you like
