God of War: Ragnarok - HDR Optimized Settings

The game DOES USE/APPLY Playstation and PC HDR Calibration app settings.

The game HDR implementation is very good as it correctly applies the system HDR calibration settings in-game (PC version included), while also offering additional HDR controls.

  • HDR Brightness: this controls the overall gamma/midpoint of the image. The Default (50) setting already provides a balanced exposure, but if the picture is too dark for you, you can increase this setting up to 75;

  • UI Brightness: this only controls the luminance of the user interface. The Default (50) setting is already bright enough for an HDR HUD.

Enjoy!

BONUS:

  • Disable Film Grain: to improve both clarity and contrast of the picture.

G3 on FMM+HGiG (18 clicks, PS5 PRO) here. Is the HDR on this game broken? 2018 GOW looks way better and bright. I have lowered the UI brightness to 0 and the UI looks same. HDR brightness does nothing either.

Did you set in-game HDR Brightness slider to 75?

I’m a little late for the party but do you recommend using PS5 PRO enhanced mode, high framerate mode ON and PSSR Anti-Aliasing enabled? Film Grain is currently set to 0. Got the exactly same calibration as you in the console system and on my C3 (I use DTM). When it comes the HDR brightness ingame, you recommend 50 (default)? It looks nice and I felt 75 was a little too bright. You think 50 can be an issue for some dark areas or should it be fine? :) Because nothing beats «perfect» default settings, easy to remember. Thanks!

If HDR Brightness 75 was too much for you, yeah, you can try leaving it to 50/Default. The important thing is the system level HDR calibration done right. About perf modes, yes, enable PSSR and Enhanced Mode on PS5 Pro

Should I still use these settings if I'm gaming on a Sony A95L?

I only tested those on LG OLEDs but you can try them also on the Sony ;)

“For an even better HDR rendition in this case it is suggested to enable Dynamic Tone Mapping after having adjusted the system HDR Calibration for it.” So set our TV to DTM on then do the calibration? Or do the calibration in HGIG then set the TV to DTM on?

When using DTM set Peak HDR Luminance preferably to 4.000 nits (which is +25 clicks on PS5 Calibration app) and that's it.

@P40L0 if i stick with HGIG here -- how would i approach this for a g3? how many clicks in the in game optimization ?

The game is using the system level HDR Calibration, which I've already updated adding the values for G3 here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63780325 (it's +18 clicks for G3 = 1.500 nits) ;)

I'm on a q80t :/ I was using 14 clicks and hgig game mode as I can only apply hgig in game mode. But I've found movie mode for games a bit better picture quality. I'm not fussed about latency. So unless a game uses the system calibration, I normally opt for dtm

I'm pretty certain Samsung always tone map regardless don't they?

Thanks a lot. Always good to not have to use game mode

Wait, HDR Game mode/preset is ALWAYS recommended! I was just talking about the HGIG option (basically "No Tone Mapping") opposed to DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping) option, but both are within the HDR Game preset which is always the one you should use for gaming!

Are these the recommendations for DTM too?

P
P40L0 | Technology: Optimized · November 9, 2022

Yes as you will need to do specific adjustments for HGIG or DTM directly on the system HDR Calibration app (see the link for more details)

Major thanks! The first god of war was tricky so it's nice to know the sequel uses the system HDR
